Such a humble guy, but I guess most of the greats were(are). Once you've done more than a little work, I think it's impossible NOT to be humbled by the whole process. Thanks for sharing Doug!😁👍

Can't thank you enough for taking the time and effort to share all of these priceless gems with us Doug. I cherish all of these recordings and this interview with Ed was so amazing! I've heard he had a few private students and did a few clinics over the years. I wonder if recordings of any of these lessons or masterclasses exist? The two times I drove from the US to Toronto to hear Ed live were two of the best decisions of my life. Ed was the greatest, thanks for spreading the message.

Hi Andy Brown - you are most welcome! I know the only teaching he did was at Phil Nimmons' request at workshops and clinics, originally in 1960 at The Advanced School of Contemporary Music in Toronto, and years later at clinics led by Phil in Fredericton and Banff. I doubt they were recorded, but who knows. Thanks again for the kind words!!!

Two additional short quotes are written out here (they're not on the audio edit): Teaching with Ed at Phil Nimmons' The Advanced School of Contemporary Music in Toronto in 1960 were co-founder Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen: BICKERT: "That was maybe an unfortunate introduction to teaching for me because I only ended up with one student . . . and he was the wrong one. He really ended up not really being interested in what I had to offer. Maybe given other circumstances it might've worked out." On the influence of Bill Evans: BICKERT: " . . . ahhh, that's a name that I certainly perk up with . . . well, actually, there's a couple-a Evans' who really turn me on - Gil and Bill. I certainly did a lot of listening to Bill Evans for quite a few years and would still enjoy it a lot today."

Thank you so much for posting these gems. Ed Bickert is one of my favourite musicians. I was very lucky to have seen him play live so many times in Toronto from the late 80’s until 1996 (when I moved to the UK). I did come back to visit in either 1999 or 2000 and saw him play with Bill Mays at the Montreal Bistro.

“I think there’s an awful lot to learn just by listening.” Right you are, Ed. Beautiful player and human being. Thanks for sharing this, Doug. Great interview.
