Hodinkee just released a Talking Watches with Ed Sheeran...hosted by John Mayer. This is the Super Bowl for watch nerds. Anyways, in short, the film was fantastic and both of these guys seem like absolute pleasures. However -- Christian and I dug in a little deeper into the video and found some questions that we figured were worth talking about.
Find out what they are...today!

*EDIT: We made a mistake with the Toy Watch "would you sell all of your watches" discussion. It was a piece Ed Sheeran purchased with a friend who passed away -- of course that changes the answer. Apologies to Mr. Sheeran for the oversight!* Also, if it wasn't clear, we love the film and just wanted to talk about it on the channel.

Yes but come on.... memories or not, a plastic watch for all those historic pieces....I don't believe that... its just a watch after all. What's real is the memories of his friend not some watch

How do you make a video talking about a video you either didn’t watch ⌚️ or didn’t pay attention to? He brought up the friend and buying watches together multiple times. “You always assume the videos are BS” and then both of you miss such a big point of the video. I’m no KZfaq hater but don’t put out a BS video when you haven’t done you’re homework. -Casio G shock owner

I have to assume that John Mayer is at least partially motivated to do these TW’s because he’s now an investor in Hodinkee and he’s trying to help its value grow. I thought it was a bit disingenrous of Ben Clymer to say no one gets paid to do these. I guess not directly, but surely Mayer and others have a financial incentive to do them.
@dannyzuko7182

Of course. John is driving up the values of the watches he owns. He's made a fortune on his watch collection appreciating in value. Plus he makes money on watches he helped design that his fans can afford. Ed is following in his footsteps.

I do not care about that, but I do want regular watch content back (Jack Foster type stuff). I uninstalled the Hodinkee app after all the stupid articles on fashion. It is like they turned into a different publication. I like Ben Clymer. I have met the man. Cool guy. I just have no idea what they are thinking now. Fratello is putting out more and better content. Did I keep went from the premier website for watches to this teen beat co tent. I just cannot deal with them anymore. I think you guys are overthinking it here. First of all, the question on why John Mayer did this. Mayer owns a pretty large stake in Hodinkee as he was one of the latest round investors in 2020, along with Tom Brady and others; so he being the MC is not weird at all. Sheeran is his buddy and is probably boosting Mayer's company by being there as a favor. And yes they probably get perks for mentioning or favoring one brand over the other....they may get access to some sick pieces (maybe at a discount?) that the average person could never ever even see in person. I don't think they need the $10,000 because they mention the name.

I can relate to the early days of acquiring my watches..what it came to then and what it comes down to now is money…and Ed and John have plenty of it. It would be nice to decide which Royal Oak to add to the collection,..but not all of us are on that big a stage…. My nicest watch is an Omega Speedmaster Racing panda.

You clearly didn’t watch the video properly. This is full of dumb takes. The reason he wouldn’t get rid of the toy watch, and trade it for his whole collection, is it’s sentimental to his best friend Jamal who died. He also clearly states the value of the watches don’t interest him and actually become a burden to wearing them. Yes he has piece uniques for Patek and AP. The white ceramic AP is a piece unique. It’s not “modded”. The rotor has the symbols from his albums on it, done in factory. Yes he’s has some Bamford mods of other watches.

Hodinkee has had some financial trouble including significant layoffs lately. I know a lot of people mentioned that John is a high-profile investor in Hodinkee, but even if Sheeran isn't paid to be on Talking Watches, he's definitely getting paid for the G Shocks, as does Hodinkee (the JM watches are all co-branded with Hodinkee, so I imagine this will be too). John even said something about how he was facilitating the collab to try to get a bit more shine on it. Overall, it was a wildly entertaining infomercial.

@Christian and Michael-there are a group of few that think the swiss are up their butt-here is what I have learnt over time-they have a code of not repeating designs for the most part, some (watch brands) evolve more than others. However, they always add value for their consumers. Here is a subtle example-Old and new pelagos, all 3 generations of the heritage black bay, subtle but every owner of each iteration has something to brag about. How about prior generation Calatravas vs the new ones, each owner is a winner. This is why I respect the swiss and their code for watch making, they respect their consumers and keep an archive. History is constantly built.

I blame that Apple watch for the point Michael brought up near the beginning when he says "everyone" is wearing a Royal Oak. I believe that Apple helped popularized the notion of wearing a watch at all in recent times. So it follows that watches are viewed as a uniform fashion accessory, rather than a chance to make a unique statement. And if you got the money, why get a dumb, cheap Apple watch when you can acquire something most people simply can't afford? The Royal Oak is the new, upscale Apple watch for rich folks who don't care about watches. Fight me.

The question on would you give up all your collection for this one cheap watch has to be contextualized; I wouldn’t do it; but I believe Sheeran will because he doesn’t care about the money because he doesn’t need to; now if he’s poor and destitute the answer might be different; but it doesn’t in any way detract from the honesty of his response in the current context

Just read comment's then checked out. They provided you lads with an opportunity for a quick earn. Take your loot and look for the next easy meal. It is what it is. Are you guys for real? I just noticed your razor add, come on lads, unreal.

I don’t know these two guys, but I can tell you that both of their noses itch. Apparently pretty severely.

Personally I felt really off watching it. It felt like a hail-mary to try and get people talking about Hodinkee now that it's in a tough spot. The pushing of the Shock really cemented this feeling for me. It felt like someone said, "what could we possibly do to get the most views as possible and how can we use this to make as much money as possible? - push an affordable watch" For background, the ES's Toy Watch, is important to Ed because it is a momento from the early days with his friend Jamal Edwards MBE. Jamal is a legend in the UK music scene because he helped drive attention to artists that were largely ignored by mainstream media but went on to dominate the charts. He was one of the first people to really see potential in KZfaq and what showcasing talent with almost no budget could do on the platform. Many believe Ed's performance on Jamal's channel is the pivotal point where his career really started.

I hate to say it but the new G-Shock that Ed Sheeran released looks like a ripe banana.
