Lyrics:
I wish that heaven had visiting hours
So I could just show up and bring the news
That she’s getting older
And I wish that you’d met her
The things that she’ll learn from me, I got them all from you
Can I stay a while and we’ll put all the world to rights
The little ones will grow, and I’ll still drink your favourite wine
And soon they’re going to close but il see you another day
So much has changed since you’ve been away
I wish that heaven had visiting hours
So I could just swing by and ask your advice
What would you do in my situation?
I haven’t a clue how I’d even raise them
What would you do? ‘Coz you always do what’s right
Can we talk a while until my worries disappear?
I’d tell you that I’m scared of turning out a failure
You’d say remember that the answer’s in the love that we create
So much has changed since you been away
I wish that heaven had visiting hours
I would ask them if I could take you home
But I know what they’d say, that it’s for the best
So I will live life the way you taught me
And make it on my own
I will close the door but I will open up my heart
And everyone I love will know exactly who you are
‘Coz this is not goodbye, it is just ‘til we meet again
So much has changed since you been away

Ed wrote and dedicated this song to his friend and mentor Michael Gudinski who unexpectedly died in March, a legendary Australian record label founder and music producer, Ed has always said he was like a father figure to him. He performed at Michael’s State funeral in Melbourne and afterward wrote this song. A beautiful song and tribute to his friend.

I saw Ed live in Denver around the end of August. He started crying singing Eyes Closed. What a kind soul and sensational talent he is. He packs so much heavy emotion into his lyrics, but also knows when to up the mood and rock out. I don’t think I’ve seen a musician with his abilities. He can entertain a crowd of 80,000+ with just a loop station, guitar and microphone. Amazing stuff. This song always gets to me. 💔

This song brings the pain of losing someone to the surface but in a good way. We remember those we love and have lost, we think of them, their voice, their words, their smile, their laugh, their hands, the way they move their head when they speak. We think of the love we feel for them and in those moments of remembering, while Ed is singing, we are visiting them. Mum, dad, Dean, our love for you is still as strong as it always was. ❤❤❤

I heard this song for the first time today. My mom went to heaven 4 months before my wedding and 5 months before I turned 24. That Nov she would have turned 59. My mom was my best friend. I could tell her anything. She met my husband but not my 3 children. My dad died in 2007 at 82. My youngest a girl was 5. My dad was my go to guy for almost any advice. I miss them both terribly achingly for all the things they missed and all the things they would known just the right things to do or say. I'm now 2 yrs older than my mom and it breaks my heart to see things from her side. My daughter is now almost the the age I was then. Her too young to go and me just at an age I needed her most. I hope my life will have been good enough to see them again someday in heaven. I'd even be content to look through the window from purgatory.

this song reminds me of my grandmother who died of covid 19, next week is 100 days of her passing, and every time I listen to this song tears always run down my cheeks because all my memories about her suddenly come. I miss her so much and I always wish I could bring her back but it was impossible. thanks Ed, through this song I will always be able to remember her ❤️

This song is a blessing ! Lost my mom 3 years ago, she was my bestfriend we were together all the time, she took care of me all my life and when she was sick i never left her side.. she is always on my mind and it has been so hard not having her around, especially when holidays like Christmas are close because it was her favorite time of the whole year. I always worry how i will raise my future children without her guidance, kindness and love, i can't bear the thought of them not meeting her.. I wish I could visit her, hug her and see her one more time.. I miss u mama 😔❤

This song sound like someone who this rising their kids by themselves. They're so sacred that they're doing something wrong. They're praying to the person asking if what they've doing is good enough. That is how I see this song.

Dedicating this song to both my grandparents who died 5 months apart. I never knew it would hurt this much everyday ever since they were gone. Saw my grandmother slowly dying inside when my grandfather passed away. Little by little the fire in her eyes were gone. She was never the same. It was unconditional love for him I guess. I never knew that someone is capable of the great love she had for him. I love you both and I missed you so dearly. I hope that both of you are enjoying each other's company there in Heaven. 💖😢

Such a beautiful song, here in Mexico we are coming up on the Day of the Dead celebrations, were the people celebrate those who have died. LAST YEAR THE GRAVE YARDS WERE LOCKED, The years previous families came with their guitars and food and sat around the graves and sang to those they loved, flowers adored every grave and love was in the air, I will share this with my friends here, thank you for the sweetness of your feelings.

I just lost my Mom back in April and this song absolutely destroys me. I think about her every day and wish I could hear her voice one more time and ask her all the questions I still need answers to and to tell her thank you for everything that she ever taught me and did for me. I feel so guilty because thanks to a busy and hectic life I feel like I took her presence for granted while she was here and I didn't visit her as often as I should have while she was still around. :( She was only 67, it's so unfair that she died so young. I miss you so much and I love you, Mom. I hope that I was a good son. I miss our Thursday afternoon phone calls.

I felt sad realizing that, even with friends and family, I lost my soul on the day that she died. I'm dead inside and i don't know how to continue with my life. Visiting Hours [Verse 1] I wish that Heaven had visiting hours So I could just show up and bring the news That she's getting older and I wish that you'd met her The things that she'll learn from me, I got them all from you [Chorus] Can I just stay a while and we'll put all the world to rights? The little ones will grow and I'll still drink your favourite wine And soon, they're going to close, but I'll see you another day So much has changed since you've been away [Verse 2] I wish that Heaven had visiting hours So I could just swing by and ask your advice What would you do in my situation? I hadn't a clue how I'd even raise them What would you do? 'Cause you always do what's right [Chorus] Can we just talk a while until my worries disappear? I'd tell you that I'm scared of turning out a failure You'd say, "Remember that the answer's in the love that we create" So much has changed since you've been away [Verse 3] I wish that Heaven had visiting hours And I would ask them if I could take you home But I know what they'd say, that it's for the best So I will live life the way you taught me And make it on my own [Chorus] And I will close the door, but I will open up my heart And everyone I love will know exactly who you are 'Cause this is not goodbye, it is just 'til we meet again So much has changed since you've been away
