Ed Sullivan, His Show, And Singers That He Had Clashes With. The Ed Sullivan Show is still regarded as one of the best late-night shows in television history. It provided a springboard for many entertainers and musicians, notably singers, who went on to become legendary characters in the music industry. Many spectacular singers who are still renowned today owe their first break to The Ed Sullivan Show. However, it's important to note that, despite being a vital conduit for talent, Ed Sullivan had his fair share of aversions among his guests. Sullivan, who was known for his occasionally prickly temper and demanding demeanor, didn't always get along with the artists he presented. At the end of Elvis's first performance Sullivan walked out on stage and stood with him. He proceeded to compliment him and said that after spending time with him during rehearsals and show prep he was impressed by what a gentleman he was. I think he may have even put his arm on Elvis's shoulder. I still remember watching that happen but obviously can't quote exactly what Sullivan said but it was quite flattering and he went out of way to say it. This was at a time when Elvis was an anathema to most adults.

Working from memory here so forgive me if I don't have the story quite right. In Albert Goldman's biography of Elvis, he maintains that Elvis was not shot from the waist up specifically to avoid showing his below-waist movements but because Sullivan told his director to do nothing special for Presley. Sullivan had been angry about Bo Diddley's appearance on the show the previous year because Diddley, who was supposed to play Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons," instead performed his own hit "Bo Diddley" and therefore Sullivan had no care for what were then fledgling "rock and roll" acts but was happy to accept their fans as his show's audience.

Sullivan had an appreciation for black entertainers. According to biographer Gerald Nachman, "Most TV variety shows welcomed 'acceptable' black superstars like Louis Armstrong, Pearl Bailey and Sammy Davis Jr. ... but in the early 1950s, long before it was fashionable, Sullivan was presenting the much more obscure black entertainers he had enjoyed in Harlem on his uptown rounds - legends like Peg Leg Bates, Pigmeat Markham and Tim Moore ... strangers to white America."[24] He hosted pioneering TV appearances by Bo Diddley, the Platters, Brook Benton, Jackie Wilson, Fats Domino and numerous Motown acts including the Supremes, who appeared 17 times.[25] As the critic John Leonard wrote, "There wasn't an important black artist who didn't appear on Ed's show."[26] Sullivan defied pressure to exclude black entertainers or to avoid interacting with them on screen. "Sullivan had to fend off his hard-won sponsor, Ford's Lincoln dealers, after kissing Pearl Bailey on the cheek and daring to shake Nat King Cole's hand," Nachman wrote.[27] According to biographer Jerry Bowles, "Sullivan once had a Ford executive thrown out of the theatre when he suggested that Sullivan stop booking so many black acts. And a dealer in Cleveland told him 'We realize that you got to have niggers on your show. But do you have to put your arm around Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson at the end of his dance?' Sullivan had to be physically restrained from beating the man to a pulp."[28] Sullivan later raised money to help pay for Robinson's funeral.[29] He said: "As a Catholic, it was inevitable that I would despise intolerance, because Catholics suffered more than their share of it. As I grew up, the causes of minorities were part and parcel of me. Negroes and Jews were the minority causes closest at hand. I need no urging to take a plunge in and help."[30]

Thank you very much for your quick response. The word that I was referring to was not Negroes, but a more derogatory word, or slur that I would more appropriately call it that began with the letter "n". The usage of it is meant to bring out the worst in people, not only to whom it may be directed at, but also to anyone else who may hear or see it. If you want to repeat it, simply cite it as "the n-word". Most people would know what it means. That would be one helpful way on the path to getting rid of this very offensive so-called word. @@candaceroberts3238

The word "Negro" was considered the proper word to use back in the 30s-late 60s, when referring to African Americans. MArtin Luther King used it. It replaced "colored", which had been the accepted word before that. It was inthe late 60s that "black" became the go-to word. "African American" came out around the same time, but took a back seat to "black", even though it is more accurate and respectful, IMHO. But the purpose of constantly switching words is to always be able to guilt trip people, and play the virtue signallng game.....a common trick in many areas by the mind controllers.@@candaceroberts3238

The Ed Sullivan Show was NOT a late night show. It was a Sunday night tradition at 8 pm in millions of homes. I think it worked because you got a good variety. New acts as well established stars. He was also mindful of the younger generation, offering at least one performance a week for "the kids." If he didn't like you it was on his face and you wouldn't be asked back. Keeping his show family friendly was important to him which is why he asked certain performers to clean up lyrics.

This was a more inoccent time in our nation. I’m 78 years old and I remember the show. I agree with ES in wanting to promote a family show. It wasn’t meant to be a political or controversial show. At that time to see controversy, marches, demonstrations and crooked politicians, all you had to,do was turn on the nightly news. Also all the criticism he received about different acts,ie, the Doors, Sam Cook, Elvis, and Buddy Holly certainly did not hurt any of their careers. It helped them. I wish we again had some family programming. Now the kids are in their rooms and the adults are watching shows for mature audiences. That’s what FANILY means, folks. Doing things together!

Being a youngster of the generation, and a burgeoning guitarist from age 11, I never missed an episode that featured musicians, especially Rock and Roll! Actually, music was getting rather stale in those earlier days which frustrated my interest in music and guitar. Then it happened. The Beatles! Like so many guitarists and musicians, that night they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show changed, not only my love for music, but it lay the seeds in changing my life and the lives of many young people. I grew up with The Beatles and, yes, became an Original Hippie, largely due to that momentous evening.

That's when Jim Morrison said "We already did the Ed Sullivan Show". I first learned of Ed Sullivan when l moved to Canada. Never could figure him out, but the guests were generally great. Even today, decades after his death, people mention Ed's name and generate a reaction demonstrating the impact he had on American viewers. Coming from Europe his TV show format was totally different strange with this seemingly old guy with a strained introduction technique.

When it was 8pm in NY it was 7pm in Chicago (Central Time). Ed's was a very good variety show for family viewing around dinnertime. I was four my brother was eight and our parents were in their thirties when the show started in 1948. Song, dance, ventriloquism, standup comedy, impressionists, acrobatic exotic international troupes and staged numbers from real Broadway shows predominated in the 1950s. (Check out 'Bye Bye Birdie' (1960-stage, 1963-screen) to see she show's influence.)

The Ed Sullivan Show was aired on Sunday night at 8pm, hardly a late-night program, and it's the reason he wanted content for family viewing in that time slot. A lot of the images are good clips but not really relevant to the narrative. Ed Sullivan's dissatisfaction with Ann-Margret was weird. You're tossing in bands that didn't appear on his show and it seems like a distraction. This video is worth watching as a backstory of time but could be tighter in editing.

Put a pin in 1964. America changed from Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, and Beach movies to Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and the rise of the counter culture children of The Greatest Generation. Ed Sullivan was square (pardon the pun) in the middle of it. An extraordinary parade of talent that heralded the demise of big production performers like Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme and the rise of "that godawful racket" that the hippies liked.

The standards performers got by, even if the business changed. No one is to blame for needing to make room for younger performers. What was great was that 10 years later you'd remember having seen Ella Fitzgerald or Roberta Peters while waiting for the Stones or Flip Wilson. Variety shows were the best mix ever, the culture is poorer without them.

My "favorite" memory of "The Ed Sullivan Show" began in '64 when seeing "The Beatles" on TV for the first time in North America!!! They were already very popular in Canada around mid-'63, as many of us kids were buying their newly released 45 RPM singles. The first LP released here was "Beatlemania....with the Beatles" on November 22, 1963. Coincidentally the day JFK died!!! That show helped to launch the "British Invasion" in the US. Then soon after all these other unreal UK bands were performing on that show.🥰👍

Today, there should not be so much conflict. While asking a musician to change the lyrics of a song he has written is unacceptable, doing an all-ages show should not be difficult for a versatile singer or band. Santana and The Beatles could do it, without compromising themselves artistically. If the band does not want to do an all-ages show, if you can call one or two songs a show, then there’s no place for them on a PRIME-TIME TV show (it came on at 8 pm on Sunday evening, when it would typically be watched by the whole family). “The Ed Sullivan Show” was a commercial show. Nobody had a right to appear on it. Ed’s requirements were well-known, so it should have been no surprise to have him ask that something in an act should be changed. Of course, some of the problems do fall on Ed’s shoulders, like if he calls up a potentially controversial band, he should expect that there will be some possibly loud discussion of what will be done and sung, and some of his requests will not just be politely accepted. Accordingly, if a singer or band felt that their songs were not suitable for an all-ages audience, they or their agent should have just politely declined Ed’s request for them to appear on his show. That is the key word. Politeness. If the act thinks their performance is unsuitable for a family audience at 8 pm on Sunday, all they have to say is, “Sorry, Ed, we don’t think your audience would like our show. Thank you for your interest. Please keep us in mind if you get a different show that would work much better for both of us. Politeness and honesty. If we had more of it, life would be so much simpler, wouldn’t it?

Sullivan began as a huge star with unquestioned credentials and always was the big dog on his stage. As the years went by, he got smaller as his vaudeville style got stale while other more modern shows came on line. As he got smaller in the eyes of the world, his performers got bigger. Yet he always saw himself as more important than his performers. It was just a clash of the old and worn out and the new, young and talented.

Why did Sullivan allow these groups to be booked if he was so opposed to the lyrics? He had to move into the future but apparently was dragged, screaming all the way. Had Sullivan stuck to his preferred format, with performers like Liberace and Sinatra, it would have caused an earlier death to his show.

it wasn't emphasized how many 1960s black musical artists were given "mainstream credibility" and incredible artistic/professional boosts by being given exposure by ed sullivan!! being beamed during primetime sunday evening into the households of millions of american viewers across the nation on his platform gave black artists acceptability, because sullivan's "family friendly" presentation created a level of trust in the artists that he presented to the broader (majority white) audience, who weren't otherwise exposed to them. for many of these artists ESS was their first time to be mainstreamed on TV to their black fans as well. so while sullivan is rightly portrayed as being "strict", "conservative" and "old fashioned" (for the times), he was obviously very open minded in creating opportunities based on talent not race, as many tv shows still did at the time. his "conservatism" was also very business savvy as regards presenting his "product" to the widest possible audience.
