As someone who carries a pry bar every day, I use my pry bar every day especially in public where I would rather not open a knife. I open a lot of packaging and shrink wrap and people don’t bat an eye but the second you open a knife for that same purpose people internally react differently.

@Adam Golden It's my own internal paranoia more than others reactions. Part of my work time is spent on a retail floor and people are weird so there's no reason to make them any weirder. City and state wise Atlanta is great bc we are one of pick a small number of states where i can carry and use a butterfly knife legally.

@Simon H I had a spare key that I had even filed into a semi sharp edge before getting a good pry bar but they really are useful. Half the time I use mine as a fidget toy spinning it in my fingers. Most days I don't even carry a knife any more as my pry bar fills 90 percent of what I used one for (including breaking down and separating cardboard parts).

Excellent topic! I'm happy to throw in my two cents: I consider EDC prybars as nice objects where some people may appreciate the design, fit and finish, materials, brand etc. From a utility perspective, they offer very little over the flathead driver on my 91mm SAK. For me, I keep them on my office desk as something nice to look at and fidget with. The nail puller-type pry bars I use as a glorified staple remover. For pry bars with straight pry edges, I use them as scrapers to scrape gunk such as sticker goo. They also make decent paperweights. In short, I buy them as nice office desk toys. I never EDC one.

I had a prybar in my EDC pouch for a two years and I never used it, it only added weight so I sold it few months back. Since then I still didn't have a need to use one. Everything I need (opening cans, removing smaller nails,...) I can do with my Leatherman Surge or Wave (surge for work, wave for EDC).

My unpopular opinion is that for everyday tasks a pry bar is more useful than a knife. I pull out my pry bar more often than my knife. I have a lot of expensive knives and they are cool but I rarely want to do any tough or dirty work. Pry is easy to clean, handle, it basically can’t break. Can use as a knife for cardboard, tape, a scraper, a chisel, opening things that require small fingers. Cheap, legal to carry everywhere including accidentally in my airplane carry on…

I can use my Knipex Cobra XS for pretty much all of those prying tasks, plus I can open bottles with it, use it as a wrench, and even with a small bit extender use it as a bit wrench if I need torque. It's forged not machined from bar or plate so far stronger than any of those pry bars. I am a painter so I use my primary pry bar all the time to open buckets of paint, scrape paint, etc. So it really depends on what you do day to day. Honestly, I like having nice nails- I also work with my hands. I need a tool that is easy to carry and can do the things people would just do with their nails- peeling up labels being a big one. These tools are also good for opening boxes- which I do a lot of. Bigger tasks have dedicated tools at work and home, but these tools save my nails- is it a vain and niche reason, sure. I used to carry a gerber shard for years and occasionally used it for a bottle opener or screwdriver but rarely to pry. I only stopped because I don’t really need to carry keys anymore and my swiss army knife bottle opener does the job just fine. I just picked up a nite ize doohikey and it’s come in handy for scraping up stickers and whatnot at work, mostly just because I don’t have to open and close anything. Overall I think little pry bars good to have on you so you don’t snap any knife tips or dull an edge you don’t need to but the current craze for “high end” pry tools feels like a “I have expensive knives now so my prybar should be too” pocket jewellery kinda thing.

I also use it to scrape things my kids get on my table. Things like Play-Doh, food, whatever it may be. I also use it to open cans because I keep my nails short. And, of course, beer bottles. Thanks for the video Dirk. My rule of thumb for any EDC item is it better do more than one thing. The only exception is a knife. I know a lot of folks don't mind loading up their pockets with all sorts of stuff but that ain't me so although I can see that a prybar might come in handy, it needs to come on a tool that offers other functions. Everything nowadays comes with a bottle opener and in a world of twist off caps (at least for beer) I don't find myself using one regularly so meh... I generally carry a Pioneers X, a small flashlight and Lever Gear tool card in my wallet. With this stuff I'm pretty much able to tackle little things that come my way and I'm fine with that. Anything more and I'll look to something more dedicated or generally heavier like a Leatherman. Sorry that was a lot of words to just say that I just don't do a lot of prying! Cheers

I have one of the Kershaw K tools in my wallet. I picked it because it's small, cheap and flat to fit in the wallet. In the years I've had it I've only used it a handful of times but I have used it. I'm in places where I can't always have my gear/gear bag with me so it's been handy a couple of times. I have handed it to people when they've asked to borrow my knife and when asked what for it was to pry something. I don't drink beer so I don't use the bottle opener for myself but I've been to some gatherings where my K tool was the only opener in the house. So it was handy there. If I have my multi tool or gear bag then it's just redundant, but as I said, I can't always have that with me. It's not something everyone has a use for it. I don't NEED it but it's been handy enough that it just lives in my wallet taking up very little space. Buying a high dollar one for "cool" factor isn't my jam. Some of them look cool though. Too many of them have too thick of an end to be useful for things I would need to open.

I keep a small prybar on my keys and so very rarely. And would it be useful for any sort of emergency, no. I like the idea of having something I can scrape with, and not having to carry a victorinox every day. And the bottle openers on them completely ruin them for me, as they add sharp edges and it’s already a prybar that I could use to open a bottle lol. I like the concept and can see why a lot of guys would want them, but I use mine rarely which is why I carry such a small Ti one only on my keys.

Yes, because what you actually want is a sharp chissel.😀 EDC sellers:"Now we are back in the game." I thing Leatherman has a chissel in a multitool. Dediacated prybar is BS unless you open paint cans all day long. Some people are hoarding EDC because it's metal. It's shiny. But yeah, give me a sharp prybar that is 70 HRC or more hard and I'll carry it too. Or carbide as hard as an insert for a lathe. There's something magical about something that can cut steel and glass

Were I a first responder I'd carry a much larger one in my truck which always has tools, but while they are adorable bro jewelry those little toys don't belong in my pocket. The EDC fetish and practical use do not always overlap. I'm a lifelong mechanic and if I want one I can machiner or forget it, but get vastly better use out of large multitools. If I've got scraping etc to do I get somethine suitable from my truck. I love toolkits but I don't try to wear them all. Proper prybars and multibit screwdrivers and scrapers are cheap but any job implies some time to react. I make plenty of flat scrapers from old files (using an angle grinder with zip disc and flap disc as needed) which are longer to apply more force and a traditional gasket scraper/machinist scraper for well over a century.

I honestly just had to look these up to see what the use was for. I just don't get it. That and the lanyard beads. Is that just for decoration? I just don't get decorating a knife. And if i need to pull nails, i simply would get a pry bar or cat paw whatever. Then the coins, that just to carry?
@DirkWerning
@DirkWerning 10 ай бұрын
Well I think there are some uses for the prybar from a lot of the comments. The beads on a knife lanyard are yes for decoration and also depending on the knife gives you extra grip to deploy from the pocket and/or grip when using the knife. The coins are a challenge coin type of thing. But yes mostly to carry/collect/share with friends. Often times to show support to a particular group or brand.

First thing: hobbys cost money and also men wanna have a beautiful gadget for fun or for using it in dirt.. We are humans. We want things. Yo can also try beeing a minimalist and... No, having tools isnt minimalistic😂. And... No i dont use a pry bar but i use a marlinspike for same reasons. Its my iron fingernail. Its useful for my work ( textils, rubber, leather) and camping trips. I get a better hold on earth/sand hills with a heavy backpack on my shoulders. If its cold, than its heavy solving knotes and ropes from the tent, with cold hands. The bottle opener.. Is optional. Its steel.. No bottle can resist🤺. I would carry a mini pry bar but.. The spike is much more useful for me.. And i look also for the shiny stuff. If you searching it.. You would see another tool universe😅. I think, the middle one and the mini pry above, could be useful.

I have Victorinox German army knife (Soldier) that has a very beefy screwdriver that they actually call a prybar. For me that's enough for EDC, though I can't remember ever prying with it. Adam Savage has a great video on prybars. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/faeTebVkkqmsiIU.html He builds models. You would think that if anyone were to harp on the subject of mini prybars it would be him. The shortest in his collection is at least 12" long. Size really does matter, because the longer the bar the more leverage is applied. I look at EDC mini prybars, and I don't see tools, I see toys. They might be well designed and made from the best materials, but they are still toys.

Ya know how they market those X number of functions on a tool, and you say "WHAT?! How?!" Then the image with all the tools and the indicator lines reach to the spot on the thing touch the tool you just counted as something else, and makes you scratch your head and say, "I don't see it." How the screwdriver is a pry bar, and nail puller and a box cutter and a fire starter....and so on and so on, and you look it over, and think, "Naaaahh!". I was about to get among others, that pocket griffin - and I pumped the brakes, and thought how would I engineer that, and what about that design isn't useful for me - and I started counting the number of tools on the thing I will never use - because the sheer additional size of the whole EDC tool will surely get in the way of using it correctly, comfortably, and efficiently - and all I need is a small, light, sharp edge to open the box, and bottle cap. So, I got the biggest key blank I could find, and I filed out an opener, and a chisel-filed the edge for opening boxes. Fits on my keychain, no more additional bulk, works in correct orientation to my hand, everything stays out of the way. And HEX bits? - We're not using the Metric System!
