@@xxArsen1xx-OnPsn Interesting that you say that as I've recently taken to carrying a dedicated bit holder the size of a Bic lighter and not some overpriced EDC-specific driver with sides too smooth and rounded, or too square to be of practical use - the Wera 813. Together with a 50mm flat bit and PH2 that seems to pretty much cover me and the flat works as a prybar, I could carry smaller bits with a small extender but a contiguous shaft/bit head is stronger...those bits are Felo and CK tools both made in Germany so the quality is there in this setup. But I'm a bit of an oddity and most people don't carry bit drivers with them. I think if you are just carrying a knife then a cheap prybar on a keychain isn't a bad option.

I was doing EDC long before the phrase was coined. In all those years I never needed or missed a pry bar! However, I bought one because KZfaq said I needed one. I’ve never used it. I bought a smaller one and attached in to my key ring. I’ve actually used it. If I had to do it over I’d get the everratchet model simply to use the bit driver.

Flathead on a SAK has been my go-to for years. The combination tool on the Compact, Bantam, and the like is even better if you add a 60 degree bevel to the inside, making it a better can opener, box opener, and gives it a sharp edge to pry and scrape. Cut the bevel into the side that doesn't have the nail nick for best results in my experience. I can post a picture for clarity if needed.

I still love my AG Russell steel thumbnail. It was originally designed to open the nail nicks on traditional knives. So it has a thin machined edge, and a little pad for comfort when using. It's just so damn useful. The edge is sharp enough for me to open a package, but it won't cut skin. It's more light duty than most of these, I'd say. But for my needs, it's perfect. I use it for scraping, for opening soda cans, opening taped boxes, etc.

I have a Nite Ize one very similar to yours, except I guess it's a newer model. It looks very similar, except it is silver in color, and has a Philips head screwdriver on the curved area at the top of the carabiner, opposite the prying end. I carried it around on my keys for months without using it. When I did eventually attempt to use the screwdriver, it immediately broke. One of the limbs of the cross head cracked off. I was attempting to adjust a wood screw in a kitchen cabinet hinge, so nothing too taxing. I think the Gerber Shard is probably forged rather than cast, but either way, none of that should matter too much if the heat treat is right. The Nite Ize one is evidently too hard, hence the fact that mine cracked instead of just deforming.

I made my own pry bar from a broken cutting blade holder for turning mill. It's not fancy, but made from a very hard and strong industrial grade tool steel. I didn't want to spend a lot of money for something so simple and doubted the quality of steel of cheaper pry bar. Again, I already used that broken blade a few times to pry something and figured out that I can made a strong pry bar for my EDC from that thing.

I carry a Vaughn 222 5 1/2 " mini bar in my EDC bag. I have removed the paint on both ends on a belt sander for a better bite and it works as a scraper and door chock. I have never broken the tip off one of these and I abuse the one I have at work. The split tip is great for backing screws out. I find a bar with a right angle head is a lot more versatile. Multi tool pry bars I am not convinced unless you are not carrying anything else but a folder are worth the extra price and space. A quality plier multi-tool has inherently decent prying abilities with the flat tip and the pliers tip. I have used my Leatherman's as a pry tool. You have to know and understand the limits of the tool. I have carried the PST, Super Tool 300, Skeletool, and Surge. Just my 2 cents worth

I totally get the need for a pry tool. I use them myself. What I really do not understand though is the interest in these toys. The titanium multi-toys that no one actually uses for real work and cost upward of $60 or $70. The cool factor on these just do not out weigh the exorbitant costs. You want a good pry tool, go get yourself a pack of cold chisels, the type used for metal working. For around $15, you can get a set of 3 at either Lowes or HD, and at HF a set of 12. Grind down one side to lengthen the flat and thin the tip. I also ground the other side down to further thin out the end. You end up with a piece of steel that was already made for hard work and will pry and lever out just about anything. Each one costs between $2 and $5 and they are perfect pocket size. Throw it in your EDC pouch or tool roll and your are all set.

One of the problems with EDC keychain tools is that you can easily get an unwieldy ball of weight that quickly becomes less-than-optimal. My two most often used tools are first, one of the Swiss lines of pen knives that have a light (red), tweezers, toothpick, etc. Second, I then found the Ant Design multitool shown above. These two tools find use nearly daily. Given the Swiss pen knives are inexpensive (relatively), I use the blades for utility. While I routinely sharpen the blade in the Swiss tool, the Ant Design tool means that I always have a razor-sharp blade I can use in a wide variety of applications including First Responder. The red penlight helps me find things in my bag in the dark without disturbing others and the entire package is pretty lightweight.

I've got a Leatherman Brewzer which is pretty similar to the Nite Ize one from the start of the video; it's made out of some pretty tough steel and is not bad for ripping open boxes and opening paint cans and such, although the bottle opener takes a few tries since the tool is so thin. It's discontinued now though which apparently makes it worth quite the pretty penny. That little Ant Design Pathfinder is a pretty cool piece with the X-Acto blades, but I'm not sure I can justify getting one myself.

I carry a small Leatherman keychain pry tool and a Snap On double ended pry tool in my bag with my proper EDC, most of the time when I need to pry something it’s something lodged that needs to be pried out from either side. I find keychain EDC for small stuff and bag EDC for bigger jobs the best way to go.

My 111mm SAKs have a locking large screwdriver which can do some light prying so I stopped carrying a miniprybar. :)

I’ve been digging the Gerber mullet. I don’t always need a prying tool but it works great for popping fire extinguishers boxes open when our psych patients kick them in lol keeps me from bringing any extra tools onto the unit

Awesome video... Thank you for putting this together! I've been considering adding a pry bar to my EDC but couldn't quite figure out my potential use case and therefore couldn't really decide on if I needed one or the type. Starting with the Nite Ize that you recommended. Seems like I can't go wrong there as a starter piece!

I ordered two... One to keep by our front door (where we tend to open packages and break down boxes A LOT) and one to carry. Ordering a third because now my wife wants one. lol

@@Pritam043 I've been carrying mine in a pouch so I can't say for certain. But the pry/scraper end isn't super sharp so I don't think it would be a problem in a pocket.

Sometimes i carry a cheap no-name for the odd occasion when i need to pry something but i don't want to force blade's tips or SAK's openers. If this prybar breaks no big loss happens. I think that a more "dedicated" tool must have another function, like an attachment to carry keys or utility blades, an not to be too expensive - which would be contradictory for what it is.

I have an Olight opry pro and while I’ll say some others look to be more ergonomic as bit drivers, have a bit better pry angles and have ratchets, this tool definitely fits more functionality into it than what you’ve shown here. Holds 2 bits without rubber bands, retaining bit driver, 6mm bit driver, whistle, bottle opener, oxygen tank wrench, and a lanyard hole. Priced well and lightweight titanium. I believe it should be considered along with the other options you’ve mentioned!

I have the same NiteIze pry keychain tool. It's perfect. I've tried a lot of little keychain tools, but it's the only one that has stuck and will never leave my key ring.

I love my Fulcrum. Havent found a replacement for it yet. If it has a bottleopener, that is an instant no-go (mostly on principle, lol), I have found that singular use tools tend to be better for me than do-all tools. I just dont need 7 screwdrivers and 8 bottleopeners on me at all times. I will use them when I want absolute minimal carry (fancy dress dinner, out on the lake in only shorts, etc), but my daily battle rattle is pretty "too much" and I am fine with carrying specialized tools in my EDC.

I work at a dealership and have to remove writing and license plates daily, I keep two tools on me. A Stanley mini scraper that holds a flat razor blade, I flip the blade inside out and keep it in my shirt pocket. The other tool is a True Utility FIXR, similar to the Nite Ize tool but has a dial that includes a phillips size 2. Between that, the flat blade on it, and the multiple hex socket cutouts (I do actually use those) it's the perfect set of tools for me. The FIXR even has a string cutter and file, I've used both from time to time. Are these tools perfect for everything? No, not really, not even close lol... but they serve me daily with the job I do, and that's what EDC is all about I think. I keep the FIXR on a belt loop, it came with a little leather snap case that covers everything but the clip so it doesn't rub on my pants which I like too.

Ive been getting customs made by Teale designs for like 3-4 years now and I love them. His customer service is great and the pricing is amazing for custom titanium tools if you know what you want he will work with you to make it happen! Pry tool was something I knew I wanted but the price point on some was so insanely high and some were just unobtanium(Lynch northwest all access anyone?)so I was hesitant at first to even purchase one. Now I hate the days when I end up not carrying it for some reason, it can do so much more than just pry at things, sometimes a slender piece of steel/titanium that you dont mind hitting with a hammer or hitting against something is just what you need.

I busted a knife 45 years ago trying to pry. I still remember the sound of that snap. So stupid. I have a Kershaw pry and the Shard. Haven't needed them but they are cheaper if I bust one. They also pass TSA security with my SAK Jetsetter. Thank you for the video. I have been thinking about buying a larger pry tool. More want than need.

I'd add a recommendation for the Amsler pry bar. I don't see them on his Etsy site now but maybe he'll do another run in the future. He makes them in CPM 3v and they're heat treated. Super tough.

The small niteize is almost useless (definitely for all all prying tasks) like any prybar that you can't rest the back of your palm on. In my experience the best pry tool is the flathead on any victorinox and especially on 111mm models. It's pretty wide, sturdy, it locks, you can use it in L-shape and it has rounded corners so it doesn't mar plastic when I'm opening different devices.

Great demonstration of pry bar tools ...but the real question is... how often do you actually need a pry on a day to day basis? Just about every multitool has a flathead that could do most of that. Is it for entry/breaching in an emergency?

I use pry tools everyday on the job, my recommendation would be to look at the vehicle drive. Carry a pry tool that will accommodate the push ins you have on your vehicle for repairs in the field . You can modify a cheap Stanley pry bar fairly easy with minimal skills. Thanks for your time

I hoped this would answer: what do you pry guys use it for most often? Like I get it if you’re a mechanic or always doing handyman work at home - but do you often find you need to pry while out and about? I only pry around the house - when opening paint cans etc. Can’t recall having to do it outside my home

The most handy ( pry tool? ) I have was a gift from my girlfriends dad. He was given a few free steel with brass look golf ball green divot repairerers from Glenfiddich whiskey at a golf charity event at Gleneagles. The two prongs have the perfect gap for removing tacks and small nails too.

Came to say the same. I've had one for like 10 years and I've pushed it to the limit and it's absolutely fine. The philips tip is absolutely useless, but I'd say it's stronger than some of my trim bars I use remodeling homes.
