Dr. Nick: I’ve been watching (and enjoying) your reviews for quite some time. For the 1st time, this one I think is not up to the usual Shabazz standard. To wit: 1) You didn’t mention that these spinners use skateboard bearings and come in various types of balls - steel, ceramic and more exotic (and costly) materials. Also, the bearings are interchangeable - you can easily swap out the existing bearing with a better one to improve the spin; 2) there’s a big difference in cost of 3-D printed vs. CNC machined material. That and the type of bearings accounts for much of the price difference; 3) no mention of how cleaning the bearings can significantly improve the spinning (e.g. soak bearing in Goo Gone then clean and dry with a can of compressed air); 4) Often there is mention of the benefit of these fidget “toys” for people with obsessive/compulsive disorders and even autistic folks. I haven’t seen any research, but that’s a frequent claim. I agree this whole area is in a bubble and the prices are often insane. But there are some makers that produce metal spinners at reasonable prices (I’m thinking of Spinetic - $35 for metal). A little research would have yielded that info. As you said, you were not all that interested in the details of these spinners so I wonder why you even made the review? It’s not like you to “phone it in”. ;) Even if these are not for you, a more thorough review would have been warranted.Cheers, Art

Art: The beautiful thing is that, well, I've got wonderful viewers like you to help fill in the blanks. All of that is true, and these are very good points. The mental health aspects haven't been peer-reviewed enough to mention, but I rather hedged that as "some people's minds just work like that." And I could have done a bearing cleaning video, but it's not an area where I'm educated enough to educate. There are spinner channels where people can find that. Because the thing is, as I discovered during the review process, I have no real passion or love for the details of these little guys. They're neat, but there's not enough curiosity inspired to allow my normal process to work. So, I had a choice: 1) Power through, and produce six thorough-but-unenthusiastic reviews, taking 12+ hours of my life and 60 minutes of yours, not to mention the time it would take to "deep dive" into spinners in the way I have knives and pens and watches. 2) Sending them home unfilmed (which is a big loss on postage, and a disappointment for the viewers who send them along) 3) Produce a mega-review like this, with my honest opinions and recommendations, but without the level of detail that certain viewers ( :) ) have come to expect from an individual product review. In my experience, "powering through" has produced some of my least-appreciated and least-well-done reviews (and tends to attract the true enthusiasts from that community to pick me apart!), and (2) wasn't something I felt would be fair to anybody. I chose the last one, focusing more on the forest than the trees. Work with them on the level they're appealing to me, rather than getting lost in the minutiae of spin-times and the hundreds of options available, with new ones coming out every moment. If you want high-quality spinner content, alas, this channel is not for you. I'll probably review the Grimsmo one, because I'm curious. But beyond that, I think I'm pretty much spun out.
@artl52
@artl52 7 жыл бұрын
Not to spin this topic any more, but thanks for explaining. I hope you know from previous posts (and this one) that I respect you and wasn't trying to pick you apart. You're right, there are a zillion (almost mind-numbing) channels on spinners, tops, etc. Never expected you to go down that rabbit hole. ;) One last quick point - I sort of got into tops (what's one more collection - watches, pencils, knives, calculators; ok I'll stop now) - and bought the Grimsmo top. Was disappointed compared to other maker/machinists. Seems like they were just cashing in on that fad. I hope there spinner is better. Also, I guess I was a little annoyed that they'd be doing tops and whatever instead of making my Rask. ;)

I literally just bought (arrived in the mail yesterday) a Spinetic VC EDC COG Brass Spinner for $40.00. I'm pretty happy with it so far, and I think it has a pretty cool design for a single bearing spinner. This is my first spinner and I wanted something metal, unique, spins well, and didn't cost more than $60. So far it seems a winner.

I didn't even know that this is a thing and even existed! However it reminded me that as kids we used to break electric motors and fans for the mini bearings,wash them with gasoline,put a thin stick in the middle and spin them with a thumb.Never imagined that this could be popular.

That being said, to smooth out the bearing in my Delica, I do sit around opening and closing it continuously when I'm watching TV or on the exercise bike, or whatever.

Kind of wish you would've elaborated on spin times (even if not truly scientific). Saying "middle of the pack", "moderate", etc. doesn't really give people a good sense of how long they spin. Some times that you observed would be nice to know. For example, I made a 3D printed spinner that lasts no more than 30 seconds while my Stedemon spinner will do 2 minutes.
@NickShabazz
@NickShabazz 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that would've been nice, but honestly, I didn't give enough of a damn. These little guys are fun, and a longer spin time is fun, but I'm not deep enough into that world to truly feel like I needed to go there.

you have to understand when comparing the higher end spinners to each other, that both price and spin times depend on the materials. of course the titanium torqbar isn't gonna spin as long as the Stubby because the Stubby is much heavier. There's a ratio between weight and spintime. and of course the ti torqbar will be more than the brass Stubby. titanium is much more exotic. also the prices on the Stubby tend to go over $200 when you go to the higher end/more rare materials, i.e. titanium and stainless steel. not to mention stubbys are made in Europe so you have to pay shipping down here. so the Stubby is actually more expensive than the torqbar when you compare each material, and only barely out spin the torqbars when you compare like materials. liked the video, btw. 👍

I know your feelings on the subject very well, Nick. I know you mean well, but seriously: You can get a $20 Home made 3D printed spinner with bearings that probably came from china, or one of the 185 spinners that you already know come direct from china for under $20. It's not really a competition unless time is a factor. The bubble has already bursts IMO, you just have to know where to look. If someone just wants to try them out then I see no harm in getting a introduction toy for a introduction price. Most of us don't have excess money laying around for such trivial things.

TFSpider, I'm torn between getting the titanium Stedemon spinner or the brass one. What influenced your decision? All titanium sounds awesome but I wonder if it being less dense than the brass will mean it doesn't spin as long as the brass. On the other hand, being less dense may mean that it's easier to get it going with one hand.
