No doubt about it, the decision by RA to sack Dave Rennie and employ Eddie Jones nine months out from the World Cup massively backfired on them. Their excuse for making the change was that they "definitely would have" failed to get out of the pool stage if Rennie were still the coach, but it happened anyway with Jones in charge. Jones will obviously take a lot of the blame for this messy situation but there's clearly bigger issues at play behind the scenes that are the true causes of the demise of Australian rugby. The board needs a clean out, especially the train wreck that is Hamish McLennan, who is already digging his heels in refusing to fall on his sword. The biggest issue in Australian rugby by a country mile is they have not looked after the grassroots level of the game for a long time now and have just gotten by riding the coat tails of their business partners in the SANZAAR alliance. As an example of their poor running of the game, McLennan wants to introduce a draft system to Super Rugby which would spread the talent from all competing nations around the 12 teams and thinks that this is how his teams will get more competitive. We already have a ridiculous situation where eight teams reach the playoffs in a 12 team competition, just because they knew that a four or six team playoff format would be dominated by the NZ teams. As an All Blacks fan I want to see rugby in Australia get strong again. They are capable of beating teams on their day but they lack consistency and don't currently have the depth and the skills required to challenge the top nations on a consistent basis.

@@petermorris1898 there's no doubting that the brief, but extremely turbulent second reign of Eddie Jones in the Wallabies setup did a lot of damage, but the fish rots from the head and it's the RA board who are truly responsible for the Wallabies hitting rock bottom. I have heard suggestions that Jones had clauses in his contract and some those were relating to investing more in the grassroots of the game. I wouldn't be surprised if he was being stonewalled by his own employers and his decision to walk away now is because of it. Another thing to note is that RA had former SANZAAR CEO Andy Marinos in their setup but he left partway into his contract citing "differences of opinion", which was no doubt a dig at McLennan as he walked away. Obviously the rumours that Jones had had a secret meeting with the Japanese Rugby Union to apply for the national coaching role also destabilized the environment in that team as well as his public spats with veterans Quade Cooper and Michael Hooper. He didn't handle things very well there.

I agree with most of what you said about focusing on the grassroots but I actually like the idea of a drafting system mate... you can get more grass roots players supporting their "winning" team N also mixing up talents / experience is only going to make these players evolve better.

@@trilli7914 if a draft system were introduced and it lifted the standards of Rugby in Australia then I will eat my humble pie, but if it doesn't then it just further proves my point that RA are just riding the coat tails of their business partners. Things started to go downhill around the time the conferences were introduced to Super Rugby. For sure the Reds and Waratahs won a title each, but because the seasons were setup so that half of the games were local "derbies" it appeared to eventually cause a drop in standards, made worse by the fact that the conference winner gained an automatic playoff spot with home advantage. Part of the reason why they shifted to conferences was because at the time Australia didn't have a competition a level below Super Rugby equivalent to the Currie Cup in South Africa and the NPC in New Zealand. The expansion of Super Rugby forced it to encroach far enough into the calendar year where they thought they could get away with not setting up a proper competition the level below.

@@noelburland7169 Yeah I tend to agree with you - the expansion of the Super Rugby killed the Australian super rugby when the evidence clearly showed that Australian rugby should have stayed with just the 3 teams! I believe Super Rugby for Australia needs to go back to 3 Super Rugby teams!

Eddie was clear that his focus was not THIS WC but the 2027 one. So why build with old guys if you’re looking for long lasting depth?

There's no other rugby coach I even bother to listen to a press conference, let along a 17 minute one. But, I love Eddie (and I'm Welsh). He say's it as it is, he's his own man and he's clearly far more intelligent and articulate than most rugby coaches. Reporters even handle him with apprehension as all it take's is one of Eddie's...'Ya don't know what you're talking about mate. Ya don't even know rugby.' Brilliant.

I must say, as an England fan I have a huge amount of gratitude and respect for Eddie Jones. I’ve been so sad that the RFU couldn’t just wait it out to see if Eddie’s maverick schemes came good. It seems like such a wasted opportunity. It may not have worked but at that point they could have parted ways with no regrets and moved forwards. I’m also gutted for him about Australia, you could see how much the appointment meant to him, and (seemingly) being forced to resign due to misalignment on pre-arranged plans is heartbreaking. I thought it was a bit nuts to take so many new players to the World Cup, and thought they’d likely bow out early. However, I just assumed this must have been approved by Australian rugby who were happy to take the hit for long-term gain - maybe not! His approach may be radical, but there’s just some magic in his work that has produced amazing results (I do admit not the last few years). Wish him all the best for the future

I see your point, but don't be too sad. I don't think he would have taken England any further than the semis. It feels to me that Eddie is the Mourinho of rugby nowadays. Don't get me wrong I've a lot of respect for him, thankful for what he did with England over the years, and I think he has taken a punch in the face here to try and kick start Australia rugby with the youth selection in time for Lions tour and RWC2027, and that's commendable.

Eddie Jones is certainly honest and to the point! It is greatly appreciated to have such professionals with no unnecessary fluff and bull that comes with it ... I suppose France for obvious reasons however, this unwavering committed rugby professional should be prised and appreciated. You'll be missed Eddie and God Bless you for being who you are and that is a brilliant person with lots of passion and commitment.

Yeah it was a tricky one bud,rennie had a very low winning % becoz of alot of injuries and becoz he's a kiwi all that sort of played apart in his sacking wen they lost to italy i think that was the last straw,they thought they had to make the change right then and there and that there was enuf time for a new coach to take the reigns and turn things around but that just created alot of uncertainty in the squad unsettled them abit and the confidence just wasn't there especially with only one year b4 world cup crazy really,it all was too fractured and participation in Australian rugby is declining as a result they don't have the quality of players needed.

I live in Australia, there is very little interest in rugby union. If there is a AFL or rugby league game on the trains are flooded. I also not too sure if rugby union is played at school level or if there is interest on that level. You need something to build a foundation on and it starts at school level which I don't really see here.

Really interesting interview, particularly related to playing styles. The SA/England style of forward power and territory is as he said maybe not as attractive, but nonetheless effective, and is the DNA of those teams. As he said France and Ireland did everything right for 4 years, yet still didn’t make the semi finals, such are the tight margins at top level. He shows his passion for the game above, which is key for the future

That France and Ireland comment really shook me. For a year leading into WC23, I could not see any other winner bar these two. What transpired in the 1/4s at WC23 was no accident either as NZ and SA slugged it out with both France and Ireland, took them to the deepest Atlantic depths and drowned them. The sight of Sexton, running around for the final few minutes behind his attack line like a headless chook, unable to muster anything, watching his entire career end without ever getting out of the 1/4s, was no coincidence. And, certainly no coincidence grandad Whitelock forced the winning play. Equally, the sight of SA going toe to toe in a giant cannon fight, try for try, and then killing France at the Stade de France, was no coincidence. People talk about the Boks winning ugly, in this 1/4 final South Africa played All Blacks level scintillating rugby, utterly brilliant, please watch the highlights. Which all of course reinforces Eddies point. You need time. It is clear his approach with his side was the right one as these youngsters have miles on the clock now and battle hardened. Eddie leaving though is most certainly 2 steps forward and 22 backwards.

In a way I see Eddie's point. Growth takes pain. Change usually creates pain. He got 5 minutes in the job and attempted to change things and got booted/forced out before it really got a chance to play out. Don't get me wrong, aside from the one game against NZ, Aussie were woeful this season, but it must be hard if the game at home is pushing in the opposite direction, or resisting. Mistakes were certainly made, but it would be interesting to see what happened next season.

I disagree that is what Rassie erasmus did in 2018 when he took over. he didnt go to 2019 to win and he said it mutliple times because he was building his team for 2023 that was always his end goal. if you know you cant currently compete at least build some stability first and then be competative. Australian rugby has been nowhere for the last 8 years and then for RA to expect that to automatically change just because its a world cup. that is delusional

It's been so completely mismanaged in recent years by a terrible management team. Winter is competitive for eyeballs on TVs and NRL, AFL and now Soccer are just doing a better job at pulling eyeballs and sponsors than any Super Rugby team unfortunately. It looked promising a few years ago when a Currie Cup style comp was introduced but it just didn't last because RA didn't promote it at all and decided to put it on pay to view.

Well said Eddy, you were never the problem. RA is the problem, how many coaches in how many years ffs. I back Eddy's decision to drop some of the experienced players in favour of hungrier younger players. Every post match interview with Hoops after a loss was like he had just come home after a bucks party. There was no sense of urgency to improve because his spot was safe.

You must have seen the footage of hooper and quade settling the nerves in a huddle planning the tactics in a gritty match. Aus genuinely looked like a tier 2 rugby nation in this cup

It is my belief that Eddie came back with 'Australian Rugby' not 'Rugby Australia's' best interests and future in mind. Required, difficult and measurable change is always hard. I, as do many other Wallaby supporters I suspect, want to personally thank Eddie for at least having the courage and fortitude to try and facilitate the required, difficult and measurable change that both 'Australian Rugby' and 'Rugby Australia' so desperately needs. Thank you Eddie Jones.

Exactly, Eddie saw drastic action was needed and with that comes possible painful results in the short term but in the long term that sees the best chance of big improvements.

Australian rugby union is more old boy network than it is in England. Eddie knows that without a drastic change in culture his work won't succeed. That change won't come because a few are loving the lifestyle. League is in ascendency on pretty much every metric (it even gives many of the best coaches to union) and it's too big a ship to turn without will at the top to change.

Eddie had all the support and backing when he coached England to reach the final in 2019. He made only one mistake...his focus was on beating the ABs and then the WC will be won, especially after the Boks lost to the ABs in their pool game. He totally disregarded the Boks and thought they did not have a chance winning the WC.

"Ireland, did everything right....couldn't get out of the 1/4s..." "France, the whole country got behind them...couldn't get out of the 1/4s..." When Eddie said this, the reality of the two favourites for WC23 really hit home for me. France and Ireland by a country mile were the out and out favourites for this world cup. Them crashing out was no fluke either for both France and Ireland were taken out and eliminated in absolute titanic battles. It proves Eddies point. You can plough in everything for years and years but you will always lose to systems that have been in place for decades in this case NZ and SA. Australia are at a distinct advantage here, however! As an observer from NZ, i have been watching for decades, Australia producing some of the finest rugby and league athletes I have ever seen. Eales a lock kicking the winning penalty, 2001 v ABs, I have never seen a lock take goal kicks since but this Aussie certainly did. Horan and Little were the finest centres of their era. Kearns one of the finest hookers, the list is endless, Campo, Ella, Lynagh...etc The leadership of Aussie rugby is the problem here and we don't have to look any further then how Eddie was bought in and Rennie binned. Truth be told, any super ambitious CEO would have done this as well as Jones brings a very sharp WC track record, so the thinking would have been, parachute in Eddie, win the WC and really open up the after burners for rugby in Australia, solid ambitious thinking...proper cut throat corporate decision making and this type of thing is an everyday even in NFL. However, like France and Ireland are finding out, it is not as easy as that. In Australia's case the system is there, it has rusted to bits and needs a giant revival. Australia may be in a position to host a Lions tour commercially. But the product that they will put out on the pitch at this stage looks utterly shocking.

He is right about the system , Tahs just signed 2 rugby league players for super rugby 2024. Need to start developing Union players at grassroots level.

There's also 5 super rugby clubs v soon to be 18 NRL clubs You got more opportunity to have a full professional career playing league over union. Despite what people think about the NRC, it was a step in the right direction. With the right investment, and long term planning it could at least have got to the point to where the A-League currently sits

EJones did a flush, fast tracking young players for the experience knowing these players will get better shows how big the gap is from a RWC expectation to club level. DRennie could only field what he had in front of him, and changing mindsets takes some time. When Rugby Aus resolve their drafting and Super Rugby process we might begin to see some real competition for the Bledisloe Cup prior to nxt RWC. Too soon to say if we'll see Wallabies making 2027RWC final but 2031 - yes, if they lift and retain the Bledisloe. EJ gave England a hint at what is needed to beat the ABs 2019RWC as does Rassie and Nienbar. Change is good if done right and Razor's ABs will have alot of that next year. Rassie and Nienbar know how far SA have to go to win and if they learn the lessons & keep the continuity in coaching they'll be unstoppable nxt RWC.

Fast Eddie Self Imposed Pariah of Rugby Union. Did'nt have to take on the job, he could have said no, there was no requirment for him to sign the dotted line. Yet he's now in the position of being the most unwanted coach in rugby union. Was it self inflicted, was he made aware of the circumstances he would be facing. In all honesty, in Australia NRL is so so good at showing high quality rugby full of talent and does not have all the officiation randomness issues nor game strangulation issues that rugby union has, it's no wonder for past 20 years Australia Rugby Union has been on a trend downwards. There were 2 great QFs but most was attritional, kicking game instead of fast-paced dynamic game... it's a big big problem imho. Jones is right.

Not great quarter finals, the best two ever RWC games. The "attritional" final was an incredible final between the two best teams, not only in this RWC but in RWC history. Stadiums were packed, the best RWC games ever were played and Rugby is thriving in countries like France, SA, Ireland, Portugal, Uruguay, Japan and Argentina. Rugby is in excellent health.

@@tonysa2337 The 2 QFs were good because the officiation did not get in the way of the spectacle and allowed the game to flow between in each 2 sides who were excellent with high skill and even contest. It was optimal conditions. The final was completely destroyed with the excessive and arbitrary card rulings with a nod to legislation issues around concussion and brain damage lawsuits along with the attrition kicking brand of rugby played by South Africa with a low try scoring game of 1 try and numerous rewinds. In the above I describe the positive and the negatives and overall come to the conclusion Rugby Union has deep flaws in the game due to: 1. Safety/Legal 2. Competitive/Professional driving a attritional style 3. Arbitrary refereeing with stoppage time and legal video forensics taking over the spectacle. I'm sure you feel a lot of conviction in your response and the game is a bed of roses but I don't see it that way especially in Australia where NRL is such a rewarding competition instead to watch. On it's day Union can be unbeatable but it's too far and few between.

Good interview, and the passion shows. AR have A LOT of work to do if they're to be considered a force in the future. I have said it before, and I 'll say it again. Grass roots rugby in Australia needs to be developed because it is STILL a private school game, and it won't develop if it doesn't try to get into the main public arena. I know NRL and AFL are huge hurdles, but at least do something other than nothing in the last 20 odd years. Just my opinion.

Got to love Eddie. Not sure why the Australians hate him. Their rugby standard has gone down without Eddie being in the team. So not sure how it's his fault that Rugby in Oz is a mess. You only have to look at the sports news coverage to know how much people seem to care about union here. They need to take it out of the private schools system

I think that RSA would suit Eddie. Unfortunately in Australia, we have a very low tolerance of people who are different - you see it in how our government and media treat our minority groups and our Pacific neighbours. When I look at South Africa, I see one of the greatest stories of humanity and humility. What Nelson Mandela did for his country by uniting them behind the Springboks in the 1990s (after decades in a tiny cell on Robben Island) was something that the world can and should be learning from. 30 years later, the Springboks have 4 RWC titles. More importantly, their Rugby team is a good representation of their people and are supported accordingly - and the players play for all 62-63 million South Africans.
