Great interview and panel, love the banter mixed in with some serious and insightful comments. As an Englishmen, much as I have enjoyed seeing the team develop and put in some great performances against the top teams, the issues he raised about the number of games played, particularly English rugby as well as the international calendar, makes for real challenges going forward. Club sides need their best players, the national team needs the best players, and the players need to have long enough careers to secure their futures. Given the shortening of playing time Eddie highlighted, down to 35 mins per game and the subsequent increase in the power game the injuries and stress on player bodies has dramatically increased. Much as I love the physical aspect of the game, I think some way of matching up international calendars and making sure that players are in good condition for international games by any changes in the rules, perhaps such as stopping the clock on scrum sets, would really help. I must say, I have never seen such a complete performance from England as against the ABs in that semi final, but can they do that consistently in the future, that will be the challenge!

Fascinating comment as was Eddie's talking about bringing fatigue into the game. I remember watching rugby 20 years ago and then I stopped watching for about 10 years. One thing that shocked me now that I'm back into it is the sheer size of the players has increased massively. I got my answer as to why now. Fatigue is less of an issue. I have to say though, I do not mind the length of the games and I kind of like the 'freak show' of having massive players. I do however find myself thinking most people must be completely bored by all this stop start drawn out play.
@drchrisdavies2941
@drchrisdavies2941 Жыл бұрын
@@uxpjsxu - yes the size of players does have the potential to impact the length of careers, as one physio put it some years ago, the rehab of modern players after a game is Ike dealing with someone who has been in a serious car accident! I still think the key factor though is sheer fatigue based on the competing demands of club and country to maximise the value of their assets. Courtney Lawes commented on it while in Australia, discussing the length of the season, and that the players were desperate for a rest!!
@uxpjsxu
@uxpjsxu Жыл бұрын
@@drchrisdavies2941 I love that comment about rehab being like dealing with a serious car accident. It's always interesting watching how emotional the players look during the anthems but I think part of it is that they truly are going into a real brutal battle arm in arm with their comrades. That comment hits home that point. Also interesting Lawes comment. In American football the NFL has 8+ months off which is really frustrating as a fan but completely understandable. These players need time to heal their battered bodies. Having said that, hats off to Lawes and the lads that came down here to Oz. Despite being rather tired they put an a great show. I was at the first match in Perth and it was a great spectacle!

In the early 2000s I thought the game should have a global comp of 3 divisions. I made my own tourn up when playing EA rugby on the playstation. D1 is a 10 team comp or 6 nations and rugby championship. All teams play each other once. Semi & final. 10th place team is relegated to 2nd division. D2 is 6 teams the PIs, Japan, Georgia and one other team. Top two play a final to move up into division 1. 6th team moves down into division 3. D3 is whatever with a final to move up into the 2nd division. Teams that lack funds to cope with the initial comp are aided by the IRB.

Lol it wasn't just because they were good though . But our selection was rubbish .. I guarantee if razor was the coach he would of made the hard decision's and droped players like . Read , Nepo , Crotty and bridge just to name a few . Read did nothing against England but get smashed . Yet we left Akira behind , as we did with laumape and lamb . They would have made more impact against England . Not picking tuipuloto over retalick based on form , letting Nepo start after his performance after his defense against South Africa . Made the same mistake against England on the try line giving England momentum. Picking jordie Barret for who knows why. And when he comes on he gives the ball away when we really needed to hold it because he lacks experience . Not starting Dane Coles when he's more aggressive than Cody Taylor . Who wanted to go around England in stead of through . South Africa won up front . We failed up front . I'm happy for England . But Hansen has never been a great coach . But look how the all blacks trended when Wayne Smith left ? . They declined . And sadly I want to see the all blacks fail . Because I know in my heart the true coach should be Scott Robertson . Lol sorry for the story book 😅😂

there has to be something done to change the effect of the scrum on the outcome of a game. I like Eddie's idea of a quick taps and not allowing goal kicks for scrum penalties. And only allowing 1 re-set. He's right that if there isn't enough ball in play time than guys will just focus on getting massive - there needs to be more fatigue in the game - and therefore more tries.

The amount of time lost while refs and TMOs converse is ridiculous now. And refs lecturing the players. So often it is utterly meaningless rubbish, like "let's have some leadership skipper" or "talk to your boys" or "the scrums have been good, now let's not have....."

Jk stuck in the past, as a kiwi eddie jones to me knows what hes talking about, the problem isnt the game going global, the problem is the game being boring also the live experience used to be better than the at home experience but with large high definition tvs and food n drink being cheaper and usually higher quality than at the grounds the whole thing isnt worth it.

Rugby is in a tough spot atm, especially with the illusion that world rugby depends on the six nations in order to keep the game afloat and with tradition etc. it's not easy to convince otherwise. A shake up has been needed for years and maybe going for a hemisphere style competition with each tier consisting of four teams and each team playing home and away maybe a better option and also with a total of 6 games, this is more than the current 5 within the 6 nations? Taking the current world rankings the top two tiers are the following: Tier 1: South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Japan Tier 2: Argentina, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa Northern Tier 1: England, Ireland, France, Wales Tier 2: Scotland, Georgia, Italy, USA etc. Keeping the hemispheres separate in this way also keeps the importance of the World Cup. Maybe as an end of season game these teams could be ranked from this comp and you could play the corresponding team in a one off game and in turn inform the masses which hemisphere is going better 🤔 Just a thought for Rugbys sake 🙏💪🏉

When forwards play with their heads so close to the ground so they can build multiple little forts to attack from the game is slowed right down.. Bring back rucking and heads will come up and the game will speed up and the crowds will come back.

It reduces the power game that he was talking about. Players will be selected more on fitness and mobility rather than strength and power. I remember the days when subs were for injuries and 15 men were expected to run around for 80 minutes! The game doesn’t flow the way it used to, it’s become very stocato
@MusMasi

@@thecuttingsark5094 the lighter *fetcher* *linker* loose forwards become more valuable in that game, there would be less mobile locks playing at loose forward.

@@thecuttingsark5094 It might become a bit like league in that even with some of behemoth forwards they have they still have quite a few sub 100kg forwards or around 100kg, while in union you might get only 1 on the team if that. I remember when I played league our club had a comparatively smaller pack than other teams, and the scores would often be close at half time, but we often ran away with the game in the second half, and would go on to win the comp for multiple years, this is amateur of course.
