My Sister turned me on to EP when I was 13 during the start of hip hop. My friends were listening to Biggie, Pac, Wutang. Don't get me wrong those boys are dope but when I blasted Eddie I got clowned. 10 years later the same brothers who were clowning me were jamming at Yankee stadium 2001 watching Fania kill it! Eddie Palmieri is a fucking jazz genius. Thanks sis for leaving me with this before you left.

He is a master! but lets not forget there are others that he admires very deeply and respects , like Bebo, Chucho and his inspirational Cuban piano masters form the 40s 50s like Lili Martinez, Rene Hernandez and many others , but Eddie has elevated this music to the max!

Latin jazz, also called Afro-Cuban jazz, a style of music that blends rhythms and percussion instruments of Cuba and the Spanish Caribbean with jazz and its fusion of European and African musical elements. Latin jazz was the result of a long process of interaction between American and Cuban music styles. One of the most vibrant of jazz styles, generically termed Latin Jazz, comes from the Afro-Cuban tradition. The clave, both an instrument and a 5-stroke rhythmic pattern, is the heartbeat of great Afro-Cuban music. 10:10 Afro-Cuban jazz is the earliest form of Latin jazz. It mixes Afro-Cuban clave-based rhythms with jazz harmonies and techniques of improvisation. Sources: Britannica; JazzArts; Jazz History Tree

The legendary Jelly Roll Morton was noted for saying that Jazz had to contain “The Spanish Tinge,” indicated that Afro-Latin elements have been in Jazz from the music’s inception. As the century progressed, however, we started to see a more overt fusion of Jazz with Afro-Cuban musical traditions, especially with BeBop innovators like Dizzy Gillespie. By today, we have a distinct style of music, called Latin Jazz, that we consider a crucial and influential vein in this musical tradition. 30:30 Source: Jazz Academy

Candido Camero: The First Generation The King of the Congas is the man behind the beats for many of Jazz's best known acts. Candido is credited as the first person to bring Latin beats into Jazz with his famous Congas. Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins, Yardbird, Dizzy Gillespie, and Stan Kenton would not be the same without his unique rhythms. But being first isn't what make Candido famous, he has brought a spirit and fire to his drums that few younger players can match. 1:04:40 Source: X8 Drums

Colonization of the Americas allowed for the melding of European, Indigenous and African sounds-creating some very danceable musical styles. Most of what is known as Latin music comes from the melding of cultures that took place during the Spanish and Portuguese colonization of the Americas. 20:20 Latin jazz came to prominence as a musical genre in the 1940s, when Afro-Cuban musicians in Spanish Harlem such as Mario Bauzá and Chano Pozo began to collaborate with African American jazz musicians. does anyone know about the sort of relationship between congas and bongos here? like do they play similar rhythms in unison or do they more complement each other to add depth or how do they go about it?... obviously not same for every song but just curious about how eddiie incorporates both? thanks if anyone can help meout im not used to this kind of music

it's complicated as you would have to understand how the 2 would work in African music. I look at it simply as two voices, with the congas having a more central role, but I suggest you get a more professional opinion from the real salseros, I am only an enthusiast. thanks.

The conga plays a rhythm called the tumbao which shares the name with the rhythm the bass is playing. The conga is a lower end instrument in terms of harmonics, so it lays the foundation while the bongo complements what the conga player is doing. The bongos are doing accents most of the time and are only "essential" when it comes to higher energy sections of the song, when the bongo player switches to the cowbell. Also, the bongo player is the one that plays the requinto "small conga" in rhythms such as bomba, plena, and guaguanco, as well as playing the tambora in merengue
