This is the second part of my July 14, 1987, joint interview with Eddie Van Halen and Sammy Hagar. If you haven't already heard it, here's the link to part 1: • Eddie Van Halen and Sa...
This interview took place on the patio of Sammy’s spacious home in Mill Valley, California. As mentioned in the intro to Part 1, at the time of this interview Sammy had sung on Van Halen’s chart-topping "5150" album, completed a major tour with the band, and had just released his self-titled solo album. Eddie had co-produced the album with Sammy and played bass on it. (This album was re-released as "I Never Said Goodbye.") At more than 80 minutes, our patio meeting that afternoon would lead to one of the most in-depth and revealing interviews they’d do together. Portions of it were transcribed for my October 1987 cover story for Guitar Player magazine.
Solo photos of Eddie by Jas Obrecht. The magazine cover photo was shot by Ray Olsen.

Funny that Eddie never went back to playing like he did on Fair Warning with all that Allan Holdsworth influenced playing. Too bad as I really liked his playing on that album. Thanks for the great interviews Jaz.

Wow great stuff!! THANK YOU JAS! Your comment at the beginning about Ed’s demeanor is very noticeable.. However I believe you may have made it worse by commenting on the star magazine question they wanted to ask you about.. I think that made him even more reserved on his answers.. I remember reading this article in high school when I was supposed to be writing a composition so I could graduate! lol Yes i did finish the composition and graduated.. Again thank you for posting this takes me back to the best decade in my life. I will be looking forward to your post of the other interview’s you mentioned…

No more praise for Allan Holdsworth. What happened with their relationship? These interviews are fascinating to listen to. Every step of Eddie’s journey should have been documented. Thanks for sharing these tapes Jas.

he was gonna help allan out with a album that became road games, but allan didnt wanna wait for ed to return from tour. If I remember right ed brings him up in a early 90s interview and refers to him as a friend but said he needed some direction with his music. I dont believe there was ever a time where either one of them bad mouthed each other in the press (or at least what was printed)

Thanks much, Jas! I have a perhaps false memory of the Yngwie answer being a touch longer in the printed article. I guess time does that to the mind.

I dont think so ...Ive got it here in front of me & it reads Eddie saying of Yngwie - 'The dude's FAST man. Boy I know that' ....& Sammy replies - 'Ed's comment was -the guy's playing SOME STUFF MAN'.

@@johnhogg9138 I was surprised to hear on this tape that Eddie still remembered the fiasco from the late 1970s ten years earlier about Tom Scholtz copying his solo actually…lol..This interview would have been just after Boston released their Third Stage album so for Jas to have put it in print would have been too controversial possibly.

@@johnhogg9138 Actually Jas himself did a lovely interview recently on the Van Halen Stories live podcast …During it he talked about spending time with both Ed and Valerie (which he might have recordings of coming up) and saw how much Ed meant to Val during their interactions. This is the stuff which people need to listen to. Not the gossip gutter press rubbish which was being invented and circulated earlier…In an earlier Ed interview with Jas in 1982 they talked about how the press had invented stuff they claimed they witnessed at an LA restaurant and Ed told Jas he and Valerie hadn’t even been there. But these negative invented stories would spread like wildfire by these unscrupulous ‘journalists’ and were as hard to ‘unspread ‘ as butter…As someone once said - ‘a big lie can be spread half way round the world before the truth is even out of the front door with its boots on. And on the internet today it’s even worse because of the interactive global technology.

15:51 with the track ‘INSIDE ‘ all those vocal tracks sound a real hoot but in the complex mix down it’s difficult to decipher all the details & what’s being said….What would be really good is to have one of these isolated tracks videos with all the vocals isolated like when they isolate guitar tracks so we can hear all of what’s said on the soundtrack clearly…It would be funnier than Saturday Night Live….lol….Also on that one ED’s guitar sounds so nutty comical in places it sounds like ‘Michael Bentine’s POTTY TIME. …lol

@@MichaelJohnson-184yes Hagar was wrong for many reasons for one Eddie wasn't bringing up all the times Hagar was drunk and forgot the words which he has and Eddie is Hagar's boss his meal ticket and come on let's be real 'you don't insult your boss' and don't insult the boss on tv !! Why even bring up negative crap,I mean who did Hagar think he was,if I was Eddie I would have put Hagar in his place right then and there !
