Yah, also Eddie always made the point that he doesn't listen to anyone so how would he know. I remember what Frank said about Eddie : "He should stay away from drugs". Eddie wasn't the brightest bulb, he didn't even know that on tour the starting act wasn't getting paid.

@@unstablesun8179 Not the brightest bulb? Eddie was extremely intelligent, he not only reinvented the sound of rock music and the sound of the guitar like nobody since Jimi Hendrix, he built his own guitars and amps. A total innovator like Les Paul. Yes, he should have stayed away from drugs. And both he and Frank should have stayed away from cigarettes, they probably killed both of those amazing artists.

You can have respect for a player and not like their style of playing. Yep, Eddie at the very least respected Frank. They were friends. Ed and Dweezil were quite close, heck Ed gave him the Rasta guitar. Ed didn't give away his orginals very often (copies and such... yes, but the originals, a rare gift indeed.).

To:ColtraneTaylor From:Tweet Tweet Jones Re: add to text ..................................... George Young's band was called 'the Easybeats'. They were picked up by J. Albert & Sons who owned Commonwealth Broadcasting and radio station 2UW in Sydney, Australia. If you're thinking Van Halen inspired AC/DC to compose by piano, that would be impossible considering AC/DC's first albums released (in the U.S.) were '74 Jailbreak' in 1975, 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap' in 1976, 'High Voltage' also 1976, 'Let There Be Rock' in 1977. Van Halens first album didn't come out till 1978. Remember this, all music is in only 12 keys: A,B,C,D,E,F,G with their respective flats & sharps. And since the piano and guitar are the most versatile instruments in displaying that fact, is why 97 percent of all songs ever written was used by one of the two. ..................................... I'm Tweet Tweet Jones...happy song hunting.

I love how honest Eddie is and a no b.s. kinda of guy he was. Even with himself. He said he liked Andy Summers playing but just hearing the same flanger and chorus effect with only chords for a whole album drove him nuts. Then he says he has the same sound on all his albums and probably people say the same thing about him. Too funny. Also the record company stuff was really interesting. I think they got screwed by the sounds of it on sales. There is a video on youtube from one of the band members of Mr. North who opened for Van Halen for a 7 concerts or so. They got screwed by the management of Van Halen and Eddie and Alex knew nothing about them not being paid at all for being on tour with them. I imagine lots of things they were unaware of that they probably wouldn't agree with.

misleading title. eddie van halen can be heard saying that he thinks it's so funny to sit and criticize other guitar players and is literally saying "who am i too talk?" since other guitarists probably think or say the same about his style. plus eddie van halen & frank zappa were friends in real life. frank zappa stood up for van halen and defended van halen's hot for teacher in court during the pmrc trials. frank zappa's son was a huge van halen fan and eddie van halen surprised dweezil zappa at his school during the soundcheck when he was only 12 years old and about to perform van halen's running with the devil. eddie even went back home to get his own guitar and let dweezil play that one when he noticed dweezil's guitar kept getting out of tune. dweezil's first recording (space cadet) was actually produced by eddie van halen. when frank zappa died eddie van halen was the first to call and offer his condolences according to dweezil zappa himself. real frank zappa & eddie van halen fans know this. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fOCHnJaVsM_XYpc.html

The subject line here is a bit of click bait, because he doesn't really slam Andy Summers at all. He says that Frank Zappa doesn't move him, and he says that Andy Summers focuses on effects-laden chord work which - to him - can sound repetitice across the span of an entire record, even though it sounds nice. He goes on to say that there are probably also people criticizing him for sounding the same across entire albums, so it's not his place to say anything... I don't see this as being critical of Andy, but more self aware of establishing a signature sound and what that could mean...

People just heard Eddie Van Halen himself say these words about Frank Zappa: "He doesn't move me ... he's too spasmatic ... too typewriter-ish." And then they react with, "this is bullsht, Eddie likes Frank and I've got the facts to prove it!" This is why America is a land full of people believing whatever they want to with religious and political talking heads feeding them the manure to keep them safe and artificially "sane".

it's scary the way people call it "click bait" when the title is spot on. Eddie reminded me a bit of John Lennon, he would put people down in an interview and then say the total opposite 10 minutes later

You left out the part immediately after where Ed says “I’m not trying to knock the guy.” Honestly, Eddie sounds like he’s just being polite and agreeing with the interviewer on both Zappa and Summers.

Was this an interview, or a phone call that Ed didn't know was being recorded? I've heard and watched many EVH interviews and in this instance he seemed to have his guard down and even gives him some dirt on Warner Bros. and explicitly tells him not to repeat it to anyone. This didn't sound like an interview to me, it sounded like a somewhat close confidant to Eddie recording him and in the process he tried to get Eddie to talk shit about people... Unsuccessfully.

Eddie will always be my hero but he always ripped other guitar players especially Jimmy Page. He was quoted saying that Page live sounded like he played with 2 broken hands. Eddie also talked shit about Randy Rhoades before & after he died. Funny how he became a saint after he died.

I don’t think this is appropriate. Because his critical view on Zappa & Summers playing wasn’t too bad. In fact he says, “Well people probably say the same about me. Everything sounds the same.” He even said he loves Andy’s sound but it drives him nuts after hearing a whole album. These were the days people listened to an entire album. It’s not all about single tracks.

Eddie and Frank were pretty good pals and Andy he respected. I really like how he admitted that all these top guitars have the same faults. You also have to remember this is the time when guitar technique and pure skill is what everybody was being measured by. Nothing wrong with a little healthy dose of competition. All I know is no one was worse than that Swedish meatball Yingyang Malmsteen. What an absolute tool🤨🤨🤨

This interviewer believes Van Halen was the first band to hold the World's record for first 5 albums being Platinum hahaha ? Total nonsense . There were bands before Van Halen ever showed up that had that distinction . Led Zeppelin is the greatest album seller in US history for only making 9 albums . Led Zeppelin - First 9 albums in a row Platinum Black Sabbath - First 9 albums in a row Platinum The Eagles - First 7 albums in a row Platinum EVH had a lot of nerve to put Andy Summers down without thought . Every Breath You Take isn't an easy riff to play . Summers played a lot of different sounding songs in the Police . I mean it was a Ska / Punk Rock band really . Summers used a Dyna Comp compressor ,Tape delay , Vintage Phaser , and EHX Electric Mistress Chorus / Flanger with Filter Matrix to get the majority of his sound . EVH never used those particular pedals .

This video is kind of misleading. Not only did you misquote Eddie but he makes it clear he’s not trying to knock either player and admits he has aspects of his sound and playing that could be criticized. Eddie and Frank are both self-taught but from completely different eras and thus, different influences. If you wanna really be critical, most of EVH’s music was written in F# (A flat) and his technical ability was extremely limited and basically noodled the same licks and whammy dives his whole career. Frabk also admittedly was technically limited, which is why he hired virtuosos like Steve Vai and Mike Keneally to do the really hard stuff. Frank composed symphonies and used his rock band to raise money to pay world-class orchestras to perform his classical pieces. Eddie’s piano skills were limited to C major and even admitted in interviews he only used the white keys. But who cares? Totally different music and totally different people who died of cancer because they didn’t listen to science regarding the dangers of smoking. Both should be with us today. RIP to both! As far as Andy Summers goes: Meh. LOL

Eddie was a fabulous guitar player, no doubt. But putting down Zappa is just ridiculous. Eddie was a part of a middle of the road, sing along poodle rocker band of the late seventies/ eighties. They where not even on the same planet as Franks body of work with his different line-ups. And he was certainly no slouch on the guitar.

no one played the guitar like Frank - he was a true outside of the box thinker when it came to playing guitar but he was also a lot more than a great guitar player so ... take what EVH is saying with a grain of salt . these cats do not have the ability to clearly see reality as it relates to other players , all of this is filtered thru their own ego . its just the nature of this type of conversation , its ridiculous . its like how ritchie blackmore acted around other great players , its tellling , like how he chickened out and ran when he met gary moore and EVH . grow up ! but dont get me wrong i have massive respect for RB .
