I built mine in a somewhat similar to yours for the lid (mine is just a primitive handle). Way safer than grabbing the whole lid everytime and putting it on tje ground. How does the drain work for you? I put sand in the bottom of mine and that seems to catch most of it, like a green sand mold.

Eddie, I love your design and implementation. Great job. I have a couple of questions that I hope you can answer. First, after more than two years, how is the refactory cement holding up? I'm almost positive I heard you say in one of the videos that you lined the barrel with KOA wool before you put the refactory cement on. Is that correct? If it is, do you remember how thick you made each layer? Finally, do you recall what brad refactory cement you used? Thank for help you can give me. Once again, great looking foundry furnace.

Sorry for the late reply. The refractory is holding up excellent. No cracks or damages. I will post a follow up video soon. I used 1-1/2 of Kao-wool and the rest was filled with KS1 refractory cement. You can get it at Harbison walker thinkhwi.com/

The purpose of melting down aluminum into ingots is to have it ready when you need it. You remove all the impurities in the form of dross and your left with ingots that are ready for the job at hand. I typically do not stock ingots because your wasting fuel to melt it twice. I melt it and use it right away in the form of round or square stock or into molds..

Where does one look for foundry cement? Might as well put a plan together now and a parts list. What size gallon drum is this and where would I look at to get one of these? Thanks again Eddie /s/ Will
@eddie2799
@eddie2799 9 жыл бұрын
William, The drum started out as a 15 gallon. The body was cut down to 17 inches and the top/lid to 4 inches. I found my drum at a BMW dealer service station. Just go into any franchise big name service dealer and chances are they will give it to you instead of throwing it out. Dealers buy their oils in bulk drums so they always have empty drums ready for the trash or recycle. The refractory cement can be found online if you google it. Try to find a local vendor as it is heavy and expensive to ship. Hope this helps. Eddie

@eddie2799
@eddie2799 8 жыл бұрын
+Rosco Hall For aluminum I use Morton lite salt as a flux. Makes the metal flow more easily. I use Sodium carbonate which is "washing soda" (Arm & hammer brand) as a degasser to get rid of excess hydrogen. Gets all the dross to the top for a clean skim. Pool shock is supposed to work too.. Don't use Sodium Bicarbonate which is baking soda.

Thanks for sharing your design! Regarding Kaewool or ceramic fiber blankets, what density did you use (e.g., 4lb, 6lb, 8lb, or other)? Also, all the ceramic fiber I could find seems to have a max rating of 2300F. Is that what you used or did you find higher rated material? I think 2300F rating should be high enough as the refractory may prevent the ceramic fiber from reaching temperatures higher than the rating. Your feedback is appreciated.
@eddie2799
@eddie2799 8 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. Just found your comment. Any of the 4,6, or 8 Lbs will be sufficient. You are correct that the 2300F rating is plenty. Most of the heat will never pass through the refractory cement.

Power Creations® Correct. It works like a carburetor. It draws air from the opening at the end. Drill a number 60 hole in a 1/4 inch nipple for the propane. And center it down the middle of the 1 1/2 pipe.

@eddie2799
@eddie2799 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Wesley. I decide to convert to propane because its cleaner and much less work. Storing oil, filtering it, pre- heating it, and not to mention the mess it makes were the primary reasons. I get about 15 melts with a full tank of propane for $28 bucks. The cost is not bad at all considering I do not have to fiddle with oil which takes more of my time.

here is a link for 3 different refractory mixes from best to ok for everyone, www.delftclay.co.nz/how-to-make-refractory-cement-3-recipes/ . also if possible try to make your crucibles have about 2 inches all the way around them and only sit 2-3 inches from the top if possible, you may have to use fire bricks if your using a small crucible to lift it closer. you want a small area for it to exhaust but keeping it minimal will help with heating and propane usage.

@megaman11011
@megaman11011 9 жыл бұрын
Myfootsasmokin I know this comment is a few months old, but i felt i had to answer. I can think of a couple reasons for melting down aluminium into ingots, the jmost obvious one is to be able to take the pure ingots to a recycling yard, as most I've encountered give a higher dollar per pound if the metal is already refined . what I do, however, is i cast the ingots into various things, ranging from engine parts to figurines, some for personal use, others to sell.
