DIY Propane Forge / Foundry Furnace Burner - Build in 10 minutes - No Welding / Soldering Required

In the is video I guide you on how you can make your own forge / foundry furnace burner. Use precaution during your build as you will be dealing with open flames and powered tools.
List of Materials Required
• Black Malleable Iron Reducing Tee - 3/4 in. x 3/4 in. x 1/2 in.
• Black Steel Nipple - 1/2 in. x 6 in.
• Black Malleable Iron Reducing Coupling - 1 in. x 1/2 in
• Mig Welding Contact Tip - 0.030 in.
• Hex Nipple Fitting - 1/8 in. MIP x 1/8 in. MIP
• Bushing Fitting - 1/4 in. MIP x 1/8 in. FIP
• Ball Valve - 1/4 in. FIP inlet & outlet
• Air Regulator with Gauge - 1/4 in. FIP inlet x 1/4 in. MIP outlet
• Adapter Union Fitting - 3/8 in Flare x 1/4 in MIP
Tools Used
• Cordless Drill
• Drill Bits
• 5/32 in.
• 5/16 in.
• M6 x 1.0 Metric Tap
• 1/8 in. x 27 NPT Tap
• Tap Wrench
• Adjustable Wrench
• Various Wrenches
• Bench Vise

Thank you for sharing all this information with us. Your system doesn't require any soldering or the use of a metal lathe. The only "special tool" required is a tap wrench, with M6 x 1.0 Metric Tap and 1/8 in. x 27 NPT Tap. This system then becomes accessible to almost everyone. Next step, prepare the wieners and marshmallows.

You those who do not already own a tap-set, you can get a metric 5-piece drill& tap set at most home improvement stores. You can use an M10x1.5 in place of the 1/8 x 27NPT thread. This connection is only to hold the nozzle in place, gas does not pass thru so it doesnt need to be an air-tight perfect fit. 27 NPT has an OD of 10.3mm, close enough than an M10 tap will work!

Sweet DIY vid. I echo others when I say this is straight forward. I got all the supplies and put this thing together and tabarnak it’s awesome! My only advice is for the 1/8 x 27 tap, 5/16th drill hole is too small. I had to step it up to 21/64 which worked fine. A general reminder too that this should to be hooked up to a 30psi propane regulator for maximum efficiency. And the only parts that really need thread sealant are the parts up to the mig weld tip. I wouldn’t worry about the iron pieces. I didn’t apply it and it Im still in one piece…😅

I made this same burner before I found the video. Interesting that without the 3/4 to 1" nozzle on the end, the flame is very unstable and inclined to go out. Add the nozzle and it's very stable at practically any pressure or air flow setting. I guess that makes it rocket science.

is the regulator gauge needed? i found the same fitting without a psi gauge. also does this make the end hook up 3/8 flare from the regulator or 1/4? im assuming 3/8

I built this, it seems to run okay at first and then the flame turns orange but is still in a jet. Is that the extra pipe sealant in the tip burning off? I'm shut it off when it turns orange right now as I'm not sure if it's getting enough oxygen. I'm running at 20 PSI

Looking to melt some 316l stainless steel (2540-2630° F/1390-1440° C) has anyone managed to get up to that tempt with a forge burner like this or is that too high a melting point and would require a solid fuel (coal) forge? (Or pure 02 with propane)

Do you have to cut a big hole to fit the end of flare into the melting furnace

Not necessarily, you can cut a hole the size of the steel pipe and then unscrew the reducing coupling then join again once the pipe threads cross into your furnace. It all depends on what you want your final setup to look like, then you can work around that.

The M6x1.0 tap and the mig tip go right through the Hex Nipple Fitting - 1/8 in. MIP x 1/8 in. MIP. What am I doing wrong? - disregard, the part from Amazon had a larger inner dimension. Home Depot had the right part.

Convert from inches to mm by multiplying the fraction of inches X 25.4. US still uses inch all over the place.

Have any of yall built this and have any problems with the thread sealnent by the reducer coupling? Does it need to be high heat resistant or will any thread sealant do? His doesn't look like it's high heat resistant

Your heat should be at the end of the barrel where the flame is actually at with the gas turned up

You dont need thread sealant on that joint. You only need to worry about air-tight connections up-to the mig tip. after that any tape/sealant is just to help make it easier to thread it on

Definitely want to be careful with a setup like that. You need flame arrestors etc to prevent flame from traveling up the hose and if they co-mingle the oxygen and fuel in the same line then that can become explosive.

Natural gas supply to your house is very low pressure. No way you're getting the 30 psi he uses in the video out of it. Also, the nozzle hole size would be different if you could get the natural gas pressues high enough.

So I just got done putting this burner together. During the test run, I'm not getting near the flame length in the video. My flame is only about 2 inches. It's like it doesn't have pressure. Any thoughts on what I can check.

You need to get a 20 psi regulator for the tank that's usually the issue

I'm guessing it could be 1 of 3 things below. 1) you regulator is not providing enough pressure (I'm currently using a 30 psi regulator I got from amazon). 2) your mig tip is not pointing directly into the center of the pipe. 3) your mig tip is either too large or restricted (clogged) .

I mean I went out and bought everything exactly like you've got it what are you hooking from your very last piece on the right-hand side to bury at last piece what are you looking for the propane tank to that cuz I've got a setup but it won't work I'm wondering what you got right there at the end of your setup to the right all the way as far as hooked up from your propane tank to your burner how do you have it set up I'm stuck I went bought everything and now I'm stuck

You need a propane regulator hose. It screws onto the 5 gal propane tank, has a regulator that regulates the propane psi/flow, and has a short length of hose down to the female fitting that'll fit the far right fitting (the adapter union fitting) you can get them at any hardware store by the grills. Harbor freight etc for like 15 bucks
