Ede Poldini (1869 - 1957) was a Hungarian composer of the late romantic / early modern period. Famous in Hungary for writing many operas, he became internationally famous when Fritz Kreisler transcribed his piano piece "La poupée valsante" for violin.
Poldini studied with István Tomka in Budapest and with Eusebius Mandyczewski in Vienna. In 1908 he settled in Switzerland, writing two of his more famous operas: The Vagabond and the Princess (1903) and Wedding in Carnival Time (1924).
Poldini is best known for his miniature piano pieces, such as "La poupée valsante", given wider audience in Fritz Kreisler's transcription, "Arlequinades", "Morceaux pittoresques", "Episodes à la cour", "Images", and "Moments musicaux". "Marionettes" were seven piano pieces that he later orchestrated.
His one-act opera Der Vagabund und die Prinzessin was given 14 times in Dresden in 1916/17 under Fritz Reiner.
He died in Vevey, Switzerland in 1957, aged 88.

Such an unusual ending for the piece. Kind of takes a brighter, more upbeat tone there. Maybe he wasn’t so homesick after all!

That's pretty typical for Hungarian music, especially compositions that are based on the _csárdás._ The _csárdás_ begins with a slow movement _(lassan)_ that is stately or even somber and ends with a fast movement _(friska)_ that is jubilant or even turbulent. Most of Liszt's _Hungarian Rhapsodies_ are based on this form.

Очень красивое произведение! Люблю его, несмотря на то, что впервые его слышу. Мне так нравится, как он раскладывает аккорды одновременно в верхнем регистре и в среднем регистре, выделяя при этом мелодию 😮

There is a Moldau loan in it, itself supposedly a folk tune. I'd guess for Central Europeans of that age, that tune might have symbolized Home.

Sometimes composers veer from dramatic to melodramatic. It's conventionally sad and beautiful, and incredibly approachable, in a "I'm-trying-to-get-the-plebs-to understand-that-it's-a-sad-part" kind of way. It's just my own take. Sorry, but not sorry. The performance, however, was terrific as always.
