Edelbrock Carburetor Vacuum Leak? This Might Cure It

If you're using an Edelbrock intake that was designed as a dual pattern (quadrajet and squarebore), then the chance of having a vacuum leak are quite high. I'll show where its occurring and what the solution is.

I use a J-tool propane flow tool with the meter for leaks. (Tech Tip; insert 3/16" brake pipe into hose end for accurate location). The guys with Q-jets always always over tighten the front two bolts. Using a SnapOn straight edge, place it on a hand operated arbor press and graduate movements straight the air horn. These below to week day DIY'ers that chain, padlock are on car, but key is in the top of one's tools. They would make good plumbers with threaded pipe as if it leaks, tighten it! DK, ASE Master Tech since 78, tech since 70.

I have had this exact problem. Ended up going g back to a stock aluminum spread bore intake off a 80,s caprice.never had a problem again. Plus I gained low end torque back with the stock peice.

Great video, I have a Edelbrock Performer 400 Intake Manifold 2171 and its carb mounting surface is only 1/4" to 3/8" wide. I like this fix for it too. Wondering if my 4 hole heat spacer will work with a 1/8" gap between it and the center divider under the 4 hole???

I tried to run one of the Edlebrock heat soaking gaskets without the plate and had a leak with an AVS2 650. Went back to the setup you showed and problem fixed.

Yup that heat spacer works well but will still get that vacuum leak past it.

Going by your set up with that adapter plate and gasket shown would that affect the dual plane nature of the intake manifold seeing that there is no middle section separating and matching the dual plane style? Or is the difference very minimal where it wouldn't change much

On mine, the 650 avs2 secondaries wouldn't clear the back of the manifold and open. I tried 2 different spacers, the first one leaked as described in the video, I bought another that was thick enough to seal properly.

This has nothing to do with quadrajet carburetors. Just wanted to tell a short story. 302 Ford 4150 Holly 650 double. Thought it was in the carburetor could not get it to adjust out. Vacuum plugs that you put on your manifold. Had a small crack of the side. Took me a week to find it. Thought I was going to have to rebuild a carburetor. Found the little rubber plug fiksdal my problems thought I'd share

For sure vacuum leaks can occur in lots of spots. As long as they’re easy to find, I’m not too mad about it! It’s these that can cause some heartache.

I had the same problem I used the thick high heat gasket it seems to be sealed up now I can adjust the air/fuel mixture

Really enjoy and appreciate your content! I am running an AVS2 on a 2101 with the 9266 heat insulator. Are vac leaks common with this setup? Does the 2732 adaptor reduce heat transfer at all? Thanks

Thanks! Yes very common on that dual pattern intake. No, the 2732 isn’t a heat blocking adapter. It just helps seal up the carburetor. The 9266 is your heat blocker.

@@MuscleCarSolutions In another video, you mention running the 2732 in conjunction with other adapter plates for the spread bore intake. Does that go for my 9266 heat insulator as well? Just run the 2732 on top of the 9266? Thanks again!

I have this setup and am curious if maybe this is why my pickup started having issues. It doesn’t want to idle in gear and acts like it wants to die. Go from park to in gear and then back to park and it takes several seconds for the rpm’s to come back up.

Possibly. It’s an inexpensive fix. Like I said sometimes a good gasket can bandaid it.

Hello, having a mystery vacuum leak. I've checked all my lines (with carb cleaner) intake gaskets, carb/carb gaskets, brake booster, etc. I'm getting approximately 11 psi of vacuum on my gauge (not so good). When I run my hand and choke the carb, I get a spike in RPM and the engine runs much muuuuuuuch smoother (with better vacuum). Touching any of the mixture screws crashes my vacuum. Running an identical setup manifold and carb, I've just got the one squarebore gasket. I'm out of ideas, and scratching my head. I would really hate to take it all apart. Could this be my issue? Thank you

So is it the spread bore that leaks? Or the square bore that leaks? He kept jumping back and forth on the two. Sounds like they both leak...

The square bore carb mounted on the intake seals up just fine. When it’s a square bore carb is mounted on this intake, it will generally leak.

I'm running just the Edelbrock insulator...is that enough? The reason I ask is I have an AVS2 with no visible or audible leaks and the mixture screws are only happy almost fully seated. Thoughts?

@@MuscleCarSolutions That's my opinion as well but I put my hand over the air horn and it tries to stall like normal. Sprayed around the intake and carb base...no change.

@@dos0711 what intake? What is your idle rpm set to? Are you using a vacuum advance distributor? What port is it hooked up to?

I have 2701 eps intake with a edelbrock 1825 thunder series. Vac leak in the rear of carb. What would you suggest?

Keep looking. That’s a 4150 square bore mounting pad and they seal well to the performer/AVS series carbs. Generally it’s something simple unless you’ve got an installation issue on the manifold.

@@travisbeals9384 4150 is the design. It’s not specific to the Holley. The Edelbrock square bore thunder series will fit it just fine. You’ll just need to verify you’ve got it sealed to the intake.

I put on a 1405 Edelbrock carb and I believe I have a vacuum leak and I can't figure out where it is, any help would be appreciated

@@MuscleCarSolutions they are the original manifolds I had an old Rochester carb on it but it's really old so i replaced it with the Edelbrock and before it idled fine but after it would start then the engine would rev up and wouldn't really go back down

@@ninjaclown0247 that’s the issue. Assuming you’re using the 2696 Edelbrock adapter plate. You’ll also need to run the Edelbrock 2732 or 2731. That should help you get it sealed up. It’s hit or miss what will work on those factory intakes but they usually leak with the 2696.
