Located in the county of Kent, and around 25 miles south, and slightly east, of central London, is the town of Edenbridge.
The town's name derives from Old English 'Eadhelmsbrigge', meaning 'Eadhelm's bridge' (where Eadhelm is presumably the name of an Anglo-Saxon settler). It is situated along the River Eden, whose name is a back formation, i.e. the river was named after the town rather than vice versa. This is a tributary of the River Medway, and was bridged by the Romans as part of their road connecting London to Lewes.
At the heart of the town is the Church of St Peter and St Paul. This dates all the way back to the Norman era, although it was rebuilt and enlarged from the early 14th century. The church is Grade I listed.
In the 13th century a market charter was granted to Edenbridge by Henry III. Being situated around halfway between London and the south coast, the town features various inns for travellers dating back to the medieval era, such as the Crown Inn from the 14th century with its unusual street-spanning sign. In the early 19th century the Ransley Gang used it for smuggling purposes with the aid of a concealed passage upstairs where casks could be hidden. During the era of the stagecoach between the 17th and 19th centuries, some of the buildings along the High Street served as coaching inns, where horses would be changed. Leather tanning was a major industry in the town from the 17th century to the 20th century.
In 1842 the railway arrived in Edenbridge when the first of two stations opened here. The original station, known as, simply, Edenbridge, is situated on the Redhill-Tonbridge Line. A second station opened in 1888, known to this day as Edenbridge Town. This lies on the Uckfield branch of the Oxted Line which links the town of Uckfield to the south with London to the north.
