My Grandparents were little kids when this was made! My Dad's father still lived in Germany! He came to the US in the mid 1920s. Getting to see something like this today is amazing! Thank you for sharing this!

Edgar Allen Poe was one of my favorite poets . Some of his poems were made into movies starring Vincent price , my favorite movie was the house of the seven gables . Thanks for this clip , these early movies and shorts are the best ! Whatever !

Why does it say copyright Bach Films 2009? Nobody named Bach Films had anything to do with this production, and is certainly not listed as copyright holder.

Interesting that Griffith has Edgar showing Virginia what he believes is the great poem that her dying has inspired him to write, and then expecting her to be receptive to it. Unless I'm mistaken, there seems to be a callousness about that. Not much subtlety in most of this short film. But then Griffith isn't always subtle, is he?

I know what u mean. It's pretty unsophisticated. Like how it seems he writes two sentences and then gives it to her to read. Goes back and writes two more words and then returns to show her again. Then back again. LOL.. I suppose at the time though it was pretty impressive and film was just starting as an art form. Thanks for posting.

I can see that. Without dialogue, gesturing motives seemed to be exaggerated in order to get the point across. Griffith’s intention might merely have been to bring awareness to the connection between Poe’s work and the inspired influence of his dying muse, as well as the struggles of poverty (in selling his work) they faced in their time of greatest need.

@@arlysilver agreed. And given what he had to work with it was still impressive. Also who knows what technical challenges he encountered with the equipment he must have been working at the time. Obviously his other films show his brilliance as an innovator, despite what we might feel about his ideological stances.
