Edge Control in Wet on Dry Watercolor

Here's a demonstration of something I call I call 'edge pulling', which I feel is pretty much directly drawing with the brush. I often do this with a light pencil drawing as a guide, but you can also go right in with the color, as I've done with much of the work in my third book "Direct Watercolor". Enjoy! ~Marc
I might use this approach for a sketch onto dry paper, when I'm drawing on location, or, in a life drawing class.
But it's also how I'd develop shadows on top of lighter washes of in more complex (studio) work.
Hope you find this interesting, and thanks for watching! ~m

This is just beautiful to watch. So often good explanations are juxtaposed to bad rendered examples. Here, excellent explanations with a BEAUTIFUL rendering. This is so inspiring. Thank you. Never stop. Could have been much longer!

Beautiful painting of this statue. Thank you for the demo of edge pulling (a new term for me). You make it look easy. Terribly sorry to hear what your step-father is experiencing and what your family is dealing with. From experience I know how difficult and heartbreaking these days are for everyone involved. Sending peace, light, and love.

Oh wow, so good... I mainly use pencil and pen when I'm drawing so watercolor always makes me really anxious because I can't fully control it. I probably should do some simple exercices to get used to the medium before attempting actual paintings. Last time I just ended up with a big mess of uncontrolled values and edges, haha.

Hi! thank you for your knowledge shared in this video :) I’m in love with that brush, whose name I read in a comment being the winsor&newton Professional Watercolour Sable Pointed Round Brush. I've noticed, however, that on the Winsor & newton site it is not available except in rather small sizes, and regardless it is difficult to find in my country (I live in Italy). Can you recommend a brush that behaves like this one?thank you so much!
@marctaro
@marctaro 2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for this question. So - I the years since I first started using the Winsor and Newton Professional Watercolor Sable it has been harder and harder to find the large sizes. There was a worldwide shortage in sable brushes for a while - something to do with the trade in animal fur. I think. But yes. They are both harder to find, and I feel, not as good quality as they used to be. What I have done, when looking for the larger pointed rounds with extremely long fibers - is moved to Chinese calligraphy brushes. They are made for Chinese watercolor painting, or for ink drawing and of course writing Asian languages with a brush and ink. Not every Chinese brush is the same, and, its very hard to find out about them - what with the language barrier. I have been told that some of the hair is 'wolf' - which I assume must mean dog hair? In any case - it should be easy to find a Chinese import store with brushes. Just look for the places with books about art! The Chinese culture around brushes is still very strong because of their handwriting. So, you should be able to find Asian shops with higher quality brushes in almost any city in the world. I know we have them in all the major cities in Canada. In the end I tried them out in the shop (with clear water) and bought the ones where I liked the points and the length of the hair. It would probably help to bring in an old favorite brush and show the owner what you are looking for. Best of luck! I hope that helps :)

It's probably Fabriano Artistico, in cold press. (A cotton rag paper). This is my usual choice. It's a bit smoother than some more commonly recommended papers.

I buy them in tubes and squeeze the tubes into a paint box a little bit at a time. I don't like the pre-made pans, as the paint is not as wet. Favorite brands are Daniel Smith and M.Graham. But if you can't get those in your country, it's not a huge issue - just a matter of what are you used to :)

The piece looks unfinished.Is that the look you are going for? I am looking for real life sharp edge. Still a nice piece.
@marctaro
@marctaro 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is what I'm going for :) Finished/Unfinished - everyone draw's the line differently. I've always felt: "If I like it - it's done." I mean - a photograph takes an instant. A classical painter might take 300 hours. Which is better? In art nothing is better or worse. Only - do you like it, or not. Try to tell Picasso his work looked a little unfinished, he might pop you in the nose. Try to tell Jacob Collins he's kind of overdoing, his students might chase you out of town. I'm saying - you can't please people with your art, you can only please yourself.
