Check out the comparison between the Echo PAS-280 Edger and the McLane Edger. I test the edgers on straight sidewalks as well as curved ones. Please submit your vote between the two.

The "McClane Walk Behind Edger" will always do a better and faster job, but you were not using it properly. When you edge curves, you are supposed to lift the rear wheels off the pavement and follow the contours using the front wheels only, this is why the front wheels are space together and are parallel to the blade.

Great advice, thanks for pointing that out.

Hey...great tip about lifting the rear wheels off and guiding the blade with the front two wheels. McClane edgers are excellent.

Used a stick edger for 12yrs. Starting was an issue on occasion. Destroyed a few engines until I bought a double piston one. Never had issues with the double piston engine but was tired of using oil & gas mix. Also tired of the loud noise. Bought a mclane. Starts easy, cuts easy as long as your going relatively straight. Cuts deeper and makes a perfect straight cut. Is much quieter as well. If you don't have a lot of curves I recommend the mclane.

The McLane definitely does a great job! It's the best one for edging long overdue sidewalks.

Both look good on cutting the grass. I think the Mclane gives a better overall appearance as it uniformly removes the dirt in the path.

Especially if you make a second pass BACKWARD with the McLane. It leaves an incredibly nice edge then.

I have a a walk behind edger very similar to that Mclean called a power trim. It does not get much use, in fact its 12 years old, and it looks like it just came off the show room floor. But it does work great for very overgrown edges or long edges with much less fatigue on your back. The stick edger works great for most edging and is convenient to carry around in a trailer. After I use one of these machines to cut the initial edge I will maintain it weekly with my line trimmer.
@MarkThomasBuilder

That makes sense. I find the stick edger the easiest, so I'll probably use that the most.

Good stuff. Really like the cloud footage. The McLane seems to leave a cleaner edge and way less noisy. The stick seems more versatile. I think they both have there place. I just sold a curved shaft and looking to pick up a straight. Was gonna get husqvarna but looking at echo too.

Thanks, in my opinion, you can't go wrong with either one. I'd say the ECHO edger is faster and easier to store and maintain.

I own a Mclane walk behind. When going around. Rubes you need to lift up the back wheels and tip to the side so it rides on the front left or right depending on which direction you are going. Also in terms of comparisons the Mclane has adjustable cutting depth which is a big advantage imho.

mclane leaves nice clean cut. I would use the mclane first for the initial cut. then you can start using the echo

I haven't run a Stihl version. Stick edgers are the way to go in my opinion for the ease of speed and storing the unit. The McLane is very nice, but kinda big to store.

I have a 1.25 corner lot that is also a peninsula since I have sidewalk and street in backyard. All combined, I have something like 7/10th of mile of edging after adding up all the sidewalks, curbs, driveways, patio and pergola space. Yikes! I own plenty of Echo and Stihl products, but selected the Stihl model this go-round but, honestly, there was zero different in cost and performance. Although I really love the stick edger, after a couple years of pushing that thing in the North Texas hear (builds shoulders too), I've decided to get a McLane walk behind edger with Honda engine for a couple reasons: 1) the cut looks just a little tighter than the Echo/Stihl due to the deeper cut and 2) it's gets tiring carrying around a stick edger 7/10th of a mile most weeks (LOL). I'm certainly not going to ditch the stick edger. Rather, I am going to use the McLane on the straight edges (about 2/3rd of all the edging) and use the stick edger on the curbs, around the curves and driveways, and backyard patios, etc. Win-win!

You need to try the Honda powered Power Trim. It is the gold standard. It has a round front wheel so you can pivot around things. It is lighter and is easier to push then the Briggs engines. Blades with a square edge cut cleaner and last longer then the sharpened edge. A thin square edge blade is better then the cheaper fatter blades. I have been doing this for 40 years.
@MarkThomasBuilder

Thanks for the vid! I have a 40 yr old Little Wonder edger, similar design to MacLane, but on its last leg. I use 2 blades to give me a thicker cut. Can that be done with any stick edgers? The wheeled edger is hard to use on softer surfaces (edging beds), and I would thing a stick would be better for that. Any comments?
@MarkThomasBuilder

I've mainly used the stick edger on sidewalks, but I think the wheel would roll fairly well for edging beds.

To start echo gear in 1 to 2 pulls: turn switch to on, move lever to cold start, press bulb 8 times, pull handle while **throttle is depressed fully** and if your a pro flip the lever to run as soon as you hear it girggle to start in 1 pull!

I use a power trim edger 150 for all straight edges, then I use my black and decker grasshog edger for all tight turns. Both machines work well, and they have their strength and weaknesses. But personally the grasshog hurts my back after a while.

They both work and have good aspects. I believe it comes down more to personal situation. For me I have a service disability, and only have full use of one hand. So stick edging doesn't work for me. The walk behind gives me the ability to edge, and not have to let it go. I have around 300 feet of edging at this house. So even if I could use a stick edger. I might still choose the walk behind. It also helps I don't have but very little curves I edge.

I’ve got the pb603 backpack blower. It’s 16 years old and starts on the 1st or 2nd pull. Seriously unbelievable quality!!! The funny and unfortunate thing is that I didn’t realize this technique until I more recently bought the echo edger trimmer pas 225 combo and read the start directions! 😜 If you have the echo blower it could be situated the same as mine. I pull with the left hand and flip the lever with my right. The key is to switch your Cruze control to wide open before you pull. Good luck!

@keep10fingersoff
@keep10fingersoff 6 жыл бұрын
as a test, try a new spark plug in those Echo Trimmers. See if that gets you down to 1 or 2 pulls. I've noticed that's that time to switch when mine get to 3 pulls. I've also noticed it seems easier to pull with a new spark plug. if you try that let me know if that new spark plug makes a difference. :)

I have a stick edger and a walk behind. I think the stick edger is great for when time is money, but the walk behind edger is better on my back because I am not bending over and carrying the weight of the weed whacker. (I have a bad back so it doesn't take much to aggravate it and for some reason the weed eater does it). Also, the walk behind edger seems to provide a deeper, better looking edge.
@davjac1977
@davjac1977 4 жыл бұрын
WAY nicer edge that what was shown here. You can get a 2"+ penetration and should always hear scraping the edge of concrete if doing it properly. In your first demo you veered away from the edge hence the dirt and grass that was showing. I can move at four times the speed with an Echo PE-2620 than a McClane walk behind even on a first time edge as it's way easier to maneuver.
