Our first impressions of Edinburgh? Where do we even begin? This city is -- in a word -- magical. We spent most of our first day here just wandering around seeing what we discovered... and WOW, did we discover a lot. Honestly, we're still not convinced Edinburgh is a real place.

The rest of the world. You need to understand. When you visit Scotland, you’re visiting an ancient land. which has a majestic beauty. yes, it’s wet quite a lot, but that only adds to its beauty, That’s why people from around the world fall in love with Scotland, when they see it for the first time. As a Scot. It’s nice to see other people enjoy, what we take for granted. There is only one Scotland, and it is the best country on earth. But please don’t just hang around the cities. go. Everyone calls Paris the city of love/romance. I will never understand why. I visited Paris years ago, found it too large full of people walking with their chins up very antipathetic. A couple of years after visiting Paris I visited Edinburgh and was amazed. I found Edinburgh to be much more romantic than Paris and the people are a lot more welcoming but the city itself, the architecture and the little alleys etc is much more romantic and fairytale like than Paris.

I was a Research Fellow in Edinburgh University for 6 years. The Department I was in had a building next to Greyfriars Churchyard. There is a lot to like about the city. It is 400 miles north of London, so summer evenings are long (although winter days are short) [Actually, the whole of the UK is north of the whole USA, except Alaska. But the Gulf Stream keeps us warm.] The rail bridge over the River Forth just outside Edinburgh is worth seeing. It was built in 1890 and has a unique design. The most spectacular Scottish scenery is in the Highlands and Islands on the west coast.

4:45 - Foam earplugs and artillery earmuffs, vital travel items for keeping unwanted noise at bay. :) 9:30 - My brother used to live in Victoria St., just a little further down, while I went to uni there in Grassmarket for several years in the late 80s (Heriot Watt, before everything moved to the campus outside the city). Many good memories. If you're in Grassmarket, pop into Bill Baber Knitwear, tell Bill that Ian the SGI guy says hi. :D I remember my brother's flat had a normally-sealed exit, an old ornate iron door, onto one of the obscure paths often used by the ghostly tours; at night, his flatmate loved to wait for a tour group to go by and then bang several times on the door, scaring the heck out of both the tourists and the tour guide, she thought it was hysterical. So if you hear strange things during a ghost tour, could well be locals having a laugh. 14:15 - So glad you wandered round there, cemeteries have long fascinated me, inparticular why the older the plot, the larger and/or more elaborate the headstones tend to be. Sometimes the inscriptions can be quite extraordinary. There are so many great things to see in Edinburgh, many of them off the main tourist trail, often simple but fascinating. The lower church at the west end, the cemetery at Greyfriars, curious sidestreets further down the Royal Mile (and the Museum of Childhood, for which, when I went there way back, admission was free), all sorts of awesome shortcuts and alleys, such as those which go from the Royal Mile down toward Cockburn Street, others into Market Street (these often have little cafes, pubs or other curious shops). One could write pages of worthy sights; I recommend the channel Clan Broonford, he's covered many of Edinburgh's hidden gems and curious facts. Must admit I find the city centre too busy these days, but seeing the city afresh through your eyes, I'll concede to a brief dip in my middle aged cynicism. :) Handy tip: for some great photos of the castle from Princes St., try just going to the top floor of any of the larger department stores to obtain unobscured views from the south facing windows.

Great video .. I’ve just subscribed After probably 20+ years without being on a train, for my wife’s 60th birthday last November we had a short break in London, travelling down from Newcastle. We had a brilliant time, so much so, we immediately booked a few more trips. In March we had 3 days in Edinburgh (my 65th) followed by 3 in Glasgow in May, 3 more in London in August and last month 2 in Manchester and 2 in Liverpool. Already booked for 2024 are Edinburgh again in January, Leeds/York in March and Glasgow next June. We are loving the travel experience .. we just wish we had started when we were younger. Looking forward to your next videos having watched all yours last night. Regards from Whitley Bay

God bless you both; it it would take a lifetime to discover the beauties of Edinburgh. You won't believe me but outside my door is a beach, where people are surfing, it is almost midwinter day, and I'm forty minutes' walk from Princes Street. Michael, Wardie Bay Brandon Breakwater. ( it's Grant-on but this bloody thing keeps 'correcting' me). Great vid. Haste he back. M.Edin.

Thanks folks, Ye gie us the gift tae sicht wursels as ithers sicht us. The following is a quote from the 1786 Scots language poem by Robert Burns "To A Louse, On Seeing One on a Lady's Bonnet at Church" roughly translated to mean 'Oh, would some Power give us the gift. To see ourselves as others see us! Also.. a wee note.. That kirkyard if it was Greyfriar is where Ebenezer Scrooge is laid to rest. (His namesake, Scrooge was fictional of course)

It’s also funny that when you’re showing the tea towels you bought. The red shop in the background is used in avengers endgame. Vision and black widow are talking outside it when they get attacked. Also the train station is where captain America fights them all 🤣

You used to be able to climb the Scott Monument (not sure if that's allowed any more) I remember going to the top with my big sister when we were little, and her telling me if I dropped a penny and it hit someone, it would kill them because we were so high up. Of course I believed her. PS: it's lovely to see ones home town through the eyes of visitors - it's easy to take these things for granted. Edinburgh's a lot less nice-looking than it used to be - Princes St for example is grim right now, but hopefully this will change for the better. Glad you enjoyed your trip to Edinburgh. PPS: 10/10 on your correct pronunciation of Edinburgh! (Sorry, I'm commenting as I watch)

We've since been informed the monument can still be climbed, weather permitting. It might have been too windy when we were hanging around, though, because we don't recall seeing anyone going up. Hopefully we'll get the chance when we return to Edinburgh in a few weeks (we'll be careful not to drop any pennies! 🙃). Thanks for watching!

Edinburgh is my favorite city in the UK followed by York. And more importantly Avengers Infinity Wars was also shot in Edinburgh. Holyrood Palace is also fascinating in its history with the ties of England and Scotland.
