I'm pleased that you enjoyed your visit to my homeland. Did you know that spiral staircases in those old buildings were always built to be ascended clockwise? That was so that a right-handed swordsman could most effectively defend it against armed intruders. That nugget was told to me many years ago by the Chief of Clan Maclean in his ancestral castle on the Hebridean island of Mull.

I don't know if this will add anything to your visit, but it might. Also not sure if someone there, or in the comments has told you this already, but just because you never mentioned it in the vid I'm assuming you might not know. St Gile's Cathedral that you visited is where the Queen's coffin was lying in rest for the public to visit after she passed away. She was there for about 24 hrs before she was transported to London.

Cobblestones are great in late autumn when the leaves are on the ground and it freezes. A double decker going down a street sideways is awesome.

The traffic cone thing comes from Glasgow where they put a traffic cone on the Duke of Wellington’s head.

Does it not make you wonder, how they built the churches and stuff 900 years ago, with no machinery, having to get the stone carve it, put the roof struts in place, I think in todays world, with all the tech, whether they could build that today, with the same detail, and in the same time span

Haggis, neeps and tatties usually come together. The sauce was peppercorn sauce that you often eat with it - it’s sort of spicy/milky in texture 😊 Highly recommend!

I think the traffic cones on statues might be influenced by the cone on the head of Wellington’s statue in Glasgow…which has been there for years and causes quite the stir when it’s missing. The haggis was served with neeps (Swedish turnip) and tatties (mashed potatoes) and is served the way you had it for Burns Night on the 25th of January, which celebrates the life of Robert Burns who was an 18th century poet and songwriter but possibly most recognised for Auld Lang Syne which is sung the world over at The Bells (what we Scots use as the term to describe the stroke of midnight from Hogmanay to New Year’s Day. Steak pie is the traditional Scottish New Years meal. If you had made to it Edinburgh Castle, you’d have been able to see the Scottish Crown Jewels, which are the oldest Crown Jewels in the U.K. as Oliver Cromwell destroyed and/or sold off the English ones, with only a couple of pieces being returned to The Crown after the Restoration of the Monarchy. You’d have also seen The Stone of Destiny, which sat in the grounds of Scone Abbey (pronounced scoon and is where the cake/tea bread scones are named after) until it was stolen by the English and kept In Westminster Abbey under The Coronation Chair and all subsequent monarchs of England then after the Union of the Crowns in 1603 when James VI of Scotland also became James I of England and then British monarchs in 1707 with The Act of Union, when Scotland and England become joined politically as well as having shared a monarch for 104 years (during which time the English Civil War happened, the last Scottish born monarch, Charles I, was beheaded, Britain was a republic and then Charles II was able to find safe passage back to Britain via Scotland). The Stone of Destiny was only returned to Scotland in 1996 (after 700 years) but made the trip back to Westminster Abbey for the recent coronation. Glasgow is the closest city to where I grew up, which was just ‘doon the watter’ (down the water or heading westward on the River Clyde) on the southern bank of The Firth of Clyde, where there is some of the most outstanding scenery you will ever see…though to be honest, that can easily be said for just about the whole of the West Coast of Scotland which is full of lochs, peninsulas, hills/mountains/glens and islands making it well known for for its rugged beauty. Edinburgh's, "New Town" is over 300 years old. Our idea of "New" is slightly different from most other countries lol. I'm glad you enjoyed your wee stay in Edinburgh. It's a really welcoming city (as all cities should be). Plus, you must have felt quite at home cos half of your countrymen/women work in the pubs here.

People get intimidated with what's in haggis, but you've nailed it by using the sausage comparison in that many cultures use offal or cheap cuts of meat , mince it and mix with other ingredients to produce something filling.

Edinburgh is amazing! Anja used to live there for 5 years. We think you guys did an amazing job of showing how majestic it is. It really is such a fairy tale type of city. Great video! We went to Edinburgh a long time ago and loved it except experiencing 4 seasons in 1 day was a bit much 😂

For the uninitiated, Haggis is definitely a mind-set thing. For Americans. a lot of the ingredients, like the Pluck, Offal etc are banned by their FDA (mainly due to their Food Safety being so poor). so their immediate reaction is to turn up their nose, before appreciating the richness of the dish. They also dont eat a lot of lamb, so their palates arent used to the earthiness and richness of the meat and the spices. For those of us in the UK & Australia, lamb/mutton and offal is more commonplace in our diet & we are used to the more savory aspects of dishes. Plus we have a harder mindset, so can see past the ingredients to just enjoy the dish

im from the north east, where sunday is a big foody drink day if your going out, those potatoe skins, you find alot of pubs put the on the bar for free, when peeling the potaoes for the sunday dinner mash, they was potatoes first, then peel them, deep fry the peel and salt it put it on the bar to pick at while ordering your drinks, not all pubs, some buy in ready peeled, for ease these days, but the older traditional still do that, with maybe some cracker cheese and black pudding on the bar to pick at free of charge

You should try drizzling a little whisky over the haggis. Often, it is served with a whisky sauce , but neat whisky is a good substitute.

I’m sure ( as a Glaswegian ) that the cone on statue started in Glasgow.The statue of the Duke of Wellington outside the Stirling Library in Queen St has had a cone stuck on the old fellas head for as long as I can remember ( probably pissed up students started it ).I think the authorities tried initially to remove the cones ,but they were soon put back up again.I believe now it’s been totally accepted and you can find postcards and T- shirts etc with the image on. I design and sell t shirts myself and have used the image. Great vid. Cheers

Funny you said about Haggis and Auz meat pie. My long lost relly moved from Scotland to Auz and started the biggest meat pie company in Auz, so thats why they are similer probably.

Edinburgh is my 2nd favourite city in the UK, the 1st being Liverpool, but thats because it's my home city. Dont know if you are still travelling around the UK and will visit Liverpool at all.

Youre a little bit late for enjoying the best of Scotland. Weather can be an issue, sure, but it's not the main reason that attracts ME to Scotland. At midsumner, it's not "how long is your day" - it's - "how long do we have in bed before it gets light again". After your evening meal, you can STILL go out travelling and see everything.! So you get to see twice as much.!

Haggis are actually small four legged mammals. They've evolved to have legs shorter on one side than the other to run around mountains. I'm not a Scot, so don't know whether there are seperate species for clockwise and counterclockwise

Its amazing how things have changed in Scotland. The Scots used to cross the border to fight the English, now they cross the border to speak there mind. Scottish men used to wear there kilts with pride in parades but pride parades have a different meaning these days.

best way to think of Haggis is ignore the list of contents and think of it as a 'loose' meatloaf' incidentally for those squeamish about black pudding, Scottish White Pudding is basically the same recipe but....no blood 😇

Have you been to York? When I visited the city. I stood in a place called the Shambles, I could swear I was transported back to the 18th century and could see the people of the time going about their business.

Just don’t mention the street side of Princes St! They ruined that and now it’s lost forever. It reminds me of a mouth full of gappy, bad teeth. Check the old photos to see just how architecturally harmonious and beautiful it was just 100 years ago! 👍 (Edit: not sure if you’ve done much touring around Europe but there are just as beautiful - if not _more_ beautiful! - ‘filmsetesque’ cities. Off the top of my head: Seville, Segovia, Rome, Prague, Salamanca, Avignon, Arles, Krakow, Florence, Lucca etc etc. Italy, France and Spain literally have dozens of towns/cities easily on a par with Edinburgh. At the start, when you say you feel like you're walking through a movie set, that was actually the street that Digon Alley was based on. The Elephant Room, that claims it's where the first HP bok was written isn't exactly true. They pay a lot of money the her estate, to say that. most of it was written down the road, at a place called Spoons. Interestingly, both places are just by an area called Potterrow. You must have been staying close to me as I can see Summerhall, just behind you, on the Meadows. I've lived in Australia and I think you have it right, steak and pepper. offal is an amazing and cheap food, Haggis is very peppery. Eat an animal ear to tail. Don't waste anything. It only tastes bad due to social conditioning.

people are so strange about foods like haggis haha, they hear a story and assume the worst when half the food they eat at fast food is battered meat paste made of all the leftovers. Chances are if you take animal meat and cook it, its going to taste like animal meat.

The cones on the heads of statues is normally a sign of disrespect/ a silent protest. You generally find them on the heads of people who historically are not to be celebrated such a wealthy merchants/lords/dukes/generals etc who for example made their money from slave trade or perhaps were notoriuosly cruel or callous iñ battle not only to the enemy but also to their own soldiers.

I think you made the right decision in not going to Edinburgh castle. It’s all about military history. Stirling castle is better for history of folks and royals.

Edinburgh is a lovely city with all the old architecture. Unlike Cardiff, where the council likes to give permission to tear down historical buildings so that companies can build modern day, ugly monstrosities in their place. 🙄

Love haggis and your reaction - BUT that steak thing was not a pie ! A real pie has pastry all the way round and is not a dish of stew with a pastry lid. It probably tasted good but not a pie.
