My brother just this model and another lv something for about $600 qt an antique shop. This sheer fact we can listen to something made nearly 100 years ago?! is absolutely mesmerizing!

That automatic brake arm can be easily adjusted so that it works. Pull off the turntable, loosen one screw, adjust the stop mechanism and tighten the screw. Replace the turntable....done! Also you really need to get some leather or padding applied to the brake so it's not metal on metal any longer.

We inherited one just like this it is in the corner of the basement What a treasure to find ! Have t tested it out yet . :)

I just dug out the one I inherited from my father ... thought I would just release the brake and see what happened. It's probably been 40 years since we touched it. Released the brake and this beauty just spun right up!

The odd looking reproducer that looks quite different from the others is made to play the regular 78 rpm lateral cut records from victor, columbia and so on. It takes a regular phonograph steel needle, which you can buy dirt cheap on ebay. Just make sure you ONLY use it to play NON EDISON records. This was sold in the day as an alternative to having 2 machines to play the different style records. The edison reproducer uses a diamond needle that could potentially last a century. Mine has. The lateral cut records, that is to say, the regular 78s, needed to have the steel needle changed after every record. Good thing they are cheap..Also, lift the turntable off and attach or glue a piece of felt or leather or a rubber eraser on the brake arm AND GET RID OF THAT DAMN SCRAPING NOISE THE BRAKE MAKES.

I believe the turntable is supposed to have a thin felt padding so you don’t scratch the disc

After the invention of Edisons phonograph in 1877 the disc record was more popular so to compete with his phonograph he started making disc records but he didn't want to copy the patent of victor and you couldn't copywrite someone else's design at the time, so he made his own way of recording. At 8:09 the reproducer that you said is different, is a lateral cut reproducer commonly used by the Victor Talking machine co. That is a product, that Edison used to manufacture back in the day since there was competition with lateral cut vs. vertical cut records ( the difference is the way of recording. Lateral cut is recorded side to side and vertical cut is recorded up and down) so since there were more Victor records or lateral cut records in shops, and were more popular, Edison made a configuration that you can attach to the machine so then you can play these lateral cut records. and that product you have at 8:09 is it. Edit: you can look online how to add that configuration to the machine and there are also pictures of it on the machine. you can even look up victor phonographs to see how you should play lateral cut records with the other reproducer. And you MUST with the lateral cut reproducer change the needle after every record or after every 2 records because if you don't the record will wear out over time. and I've seen badly worn out records with amazing titles and to prevent this is to change the steel needle after every use. I should know because I have a Victor Gramophone the fifth or V, and the needles can be added with titling the round reproducer up and unscrewing the screw and place the steel needle into the hole and tighten the screw and play. then repeat this process to remove the needle and place it back again. other needles that can be used are bamboo ,cactus ,or wood/toothpick (but do NOT use any household toothpick its not made the same or it isn't the same wood as manufactured ones for the gramophone)

If you pull out on the stop bracket under the turn table, it will contact the swing arm and stop the player! It can be adjusted before playing each record to the grooves of the record! Easy peasy!!! The second diagram with the steel needle is for playing the regular thinner 78 rpm records... sounds like the felt under the turn table which stops it is worn out or missing.....screeeccchhhhhhh!!😵‍💫

Here's an idea= remove the turntable and put a new leather brake pad into the mechanism. No more metal on metal contact!

In answer to Estelle Slootmaker, who could not move the tone arm on her Edison, I had my sister examine the one in our video. She said, "My sister examined the Edison in our video. She said, “I can't find anything other than the lever - you raise or lower the lever and it raises and lowers the tone arm. If that doesn't work, it must be either stuck or something broken inside perhaps. When it (the tone arm) is moved to the left/center it is actually in the down position, and no, once you have pushed it all the way to the left(into the center) it is locked in that position. You can’t move it back to the right again unless you put the lever down which releases it/raises it up and it it free to move again. When you raise and lower the lever, the entire bullhorn contraption underneath in the cabinet goes up and down. It is connected to the tone arm in the back. The whole thing is connected like in a loop." She also make two short videos showing what she is talking about. My name is Tina Hendricks. I have the same Edison disc phonograph. When my father passed, it was left to me. I never knew the speaker was behind the sound screen or that you could even adjust the volume. Thank you soooo much for this video 🥰. Could you tell me though, how to change the needle? There are extra needles but the inital one is totally worn down. It looks as if you just pop the old one out and stick in another needle but it seems to take more force than I want to use. Can you help me?

I just obtained an Edison Diamond Disc Phonograph. It plays a record half way through before slowing down nio matter how much I wind it. Am I doing something wrong, or does something need to be adjusted? Thanks

I have one that I just got but it is in rough condition i believe it is missing some pieces specifically the pieces for the volume buffer piece but I'm curious to find out if the one I have is worth restoring...any information would be greatly appreciated!

Just brought my great grandparents' Edison Diamond Disc phonograph home. They lived in Two Rivers, WI. The record player part is exactly like the one demonstrated but it is in a larger console. The tone arm seems to be stuck in the down position. The lever doe not raise it up. Any advice?
