In this video I show how I would approach a Lightroom only edit, and deal with a high dynamic range scene. In this video I talk about the importance of working locally, and avoiding doing the bulk of the edit with global adjustments.

Thanks Nick, I love the way you explained your thought process to processing this beautiful image. You have inspired me to take a look at some of my older images again. Thanks Nick for another great tutorial. As usual, I learn more from you in 20 minutes than I could ever through weeks of self-study or sifting through the ad-riddled garbage of KZfaq. Thanks for all the work you do putting these videos together. With so much content available, it's not hard for an amateur like me to begin seeing improvements quickly in my own photography and workflow. I just bought the Adobe subscription to PS and LR bundle and your guidance is helping me break through some long drawn ruts. Once I get a grasp on the basic stuff, I'll grab some of your premium content.

Man I just love how methodical and mindful you are man. That’s one of my biggest problems-not taking time to ‘finesse’ the edit and truly thinking about every step I’m taking. So much of my process feels sort of broken up or random and back and forth. Lol. Just watching someone who really knows how to process actually process an image from beginning to end really helps put it in perspective and gives me lots to think about next time I’m get ‘lost’ when editing an image.

Great job Nick. I’m one of those that edits almost entirely in LR so I appreciate the walk through you did. Adobe pissed me off when they went to their cloud based subscription plan so it’s a stand alone copy of LR for me. As such, I work with a more limited set of editing tools but since I’m just a hobbyist and I don’t like to spend too much time editing, it works well enough. Learned a lot from your use of graduated filters in this tutorial that I can apply. Thanks!

Very helpful video for me, as a 90% Lightroom editor. I do exposure & focus stacks plus cleanup stuff in PhotoShop but I know I'm only scratching the surface. You can still use a luminosity mask in either the radial tool or the graduated filters Nick. Just draw the filter and then go to the bottom of the adjustment panel, click on masking and select luminosity (or colour if you want). You can then adjust the mask to only target the light or dark etc and leave the innocent bystander pixels alone. This allows you to target specific areas just like in PS.
@NickPage
@NickPage 4 жыл бұрын
I find range masking in Lightroom to be pretty useless, I know lost of people love it but I find it to be to unrefined to use. They are no where near a true luminosity mask

Very helpful tutorial. This well may be the best explanation on KZfaq as to what each of the sharpening sliders do, though you explanation of "amount" was pretty vague and your average viewer probably doesn't know the difference between hi-pass filtering and deconvolution (but at least they can look up those concepts if they are interested).

I really hope you make the tutorial. Thanks a million.

Thanks for the video Nick, always good to see how you would process. Have to ask is there a reason you haven’t used the range mask on the graduated filters, to avoid those bystanders as you brilliantly put it 😁
@HerveAttia
@HerveAttia 4 жыл бұрын
Great video. Very informative. You should have quickly covered the new useful feature "Filter range mask". Also there is a LR rule that states that if you sharpen your image (which introduces traces of both luminance and color noise), you should applied a noise reduction of "100 minus sharpen value". In your example, you applied 60% sharpening, noise reduction should have been 40%.

Hey Nick, awesome video. This is basically my edit in Lightroom. Do little global adjustments to get true blacks and whites, correct some colors and White balance and then use the local adjustments for everything. Everybody - Including you, always says "photoshop is way more powerful!". Yes - I know what Photoshop can do. But how does it change my processing? What can I NOT do in lightroom? If you find the masks to be unprecise in LR just use the Range Masking Feature to get it where you need it. I know that you have the Layers and Layer masks and Lumenzia if you want to go to town. But I cannot find anyone that SHOWS how you can just hit a hard limit in Lightroom and make it way better in Photoshop. I would LOVE to see how you do something until LR is at it's limit and then make the same stuff in Photoshop and own it like a king. I used Photoshop for years for everything except photography. I know the program. But I don't know how it will be more powerful than Lightroom for Photo editing (Ignoring stuff like Content Aware Fill and HEAVY photoshopping like stacked Product photography and whatnot). I want to love Photoshop and I want to get better at my images. But everytime I'm in Photoshop I think to myself: "This is way easier in LR and everything I do here, I can to there aswell. Why am I doing this?" then I close my Photoshop edit and do that in LR. :-/
