As India battles to contain a devastating second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approval ratings have fallen to a new low. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who swept to power in 2014 and was voted back to the office in 2019 with a thumping majority, had successfully maintained the image of a powerful nationalist leader. However, as India’s total caseload went past 25 millions this week, it exposed the lack of preparation on the part of the government and eroded Modi’s support base, indicated the U.S. data intelligence company Morning Consult’s tracker of a dozen global leaders. In his lowest ratings since the U.S. firm began tracking his popularity in August 2019, Modi’s overall ratings this week stand at 63%. In massive decline that happened in April, his net approval dropped 22 points. I have just recovered from covid....lost a close family member to covid....my biz is suffering loss. To pay timely salary to my team is my priority..and in this time we are getting calls from gst depts to pay dues or face penalties and pay late fee.....I have just one question to ask central and state govt...... How much more we have to suffer ? Is there an end or just die because of stress + family pressure + business pressure .. to get biz we have to travel..we have to do installation...3 months gone..... can't survive

Unlike in south where there is a history if reforms and education, the under privileged in up & Bihar have been systemically put down for centuries. These people are not politically aware, they are disorganised and hence cannot protest against their oppressors. They are not weak minded, they are just so badly oppressed.

You missed a point here. Unemployment was rampant even just before the 2019 elections and people still voted for Modi in droves. As long as North Indians fear Muslims, Modi keeps winning.

@@2010sourabh True. But South Indians are not seeing Muslims as a threat yet and 90% of Modi's vote base is from non-South states except for Karnataka. Unless this changes, he would keep winning. This also highlights tremendous lack of vision in our constitution when it proposed majoritarian democracy for India. Although Modi is almost zero in half of India, he could still become a PM. In this regard, BJP is very unlike Congress which had a pan India popularity at its peak hence this major problem in our constitution was glossed over. But Modi phenomenon proved it is very easy to win primeministership if you just manage to take care of the Hindi belt. Therefore, it should be ensured that there is some sort of system in which a single party can't form a government unless it wins some minimum number of seats in each state of India. This will ensure that every government thus formed will almost certainly be a coalition. It is one suggestion I off handedly made. But there are number of other alternatives, if one cares to think, to prevent a cruel monopolistic majoritarian rule in India. But for that to happen we should first recognise our constitution was very sloppily written, which we are not willing to acknowledge yet.

Sir, as you have rightly said it is difficult for the economy to bounce back. For the economy to bounce back you need economists like Dr Manmohan Singh, Raghuram Rajan, Amartya Sen. Economy cannot be brought on track when ministers advocate use of cow urine and cow dung to cure a pandemic, when ministers chant mantras and blow conch instead of sharing data with scientists. I believe one of the main reasons for Congress still not being able to make a comeback is that they don't any longer have a Core audience. Usually it was the rural areas who voted for Congress while the urban middle class (baniyas etc...) voted for BJP. However due to the polarisation of the BJP, the hindu-muslim divide is driving the voting preferences. But this will soon change as the poor will realize that it is only Congress that can provide a solid governance.

Sir - Kind of disagree here. Core constituency voted Modi for Mandir & Shamshaan (not for their own well being). Also, the existing formulas like Communal Riots/NRC-CAA/Short war with Pakistan/China will be used.

This argument is absurd. Indira Gandhi's emergency did not affect the public. Public did not suffer. It was the politicians opponents. But here, the lives of general public is severely affected. People lost their lives, livelihood and even their peace of mind. So, they will not forget that easily. Modi's brand ambassadors will not succeed in their propaganda hereafter. Their stories will not get in to the people. There's no policy, philosophy for BJP to recover economy. He lost all economists. He lost health experts now. He lost everybody who had concerns for the people and who had knowledge in their subject... so Modi cannot recover anything.. all that he has is his prachar tactics. They also list their passion.. so no hope!!
