This article is a masterpiece! I really appreciate how you have exposed the hypocrisy of ex-CJI! And i don't expect any changes going further either..the same pattern in appointment of CJI and judges in general in important cases has been questionable! I agree with you. Sujith Nair has done a wonderful job. But CJI Ramana had some limitations. It is true that he had a tenure of around 16 months. But due to Covid and other administrative constraints, the CJI confessed in his farewell speech that a "full-fledged hearing was possible for only 50 days". Due such constraints he could not take up all the cases.

When he was CJI he had given good lecture, when he was supposed to give good judgement. No such judgement was passed. He lacked courage and he was not good CJI.

Really a sorry state of affairs. Indeed Ramana gave hopeful speeches while in office, but as usual they were mere bubbles in the water. The disappointed common man will pay for the pension & other retirement benefits not only for Ramana but also for his predecessors who quitely walked away likewise, in the form of TAXES. Long live Bhatathmatha.

take simpler cases: arnab gowsamy case was taken up urgently but not the case of the kerala journalist. freebies case was taken up urgently but not the bail cases of others whatever SG says is god's message and he rarely contradicted How did he kill the pegasus court case.

I am a great admirer of your editorials. Your clear cut dissection on topics is just awesome. Rightly said Ex Cji Ramanna was just biding his time and trying to avoid wading into controversies. The least he could have done is on Hijab issue in Karnataka. So let's accept he was a good speaker. Now as there were no negative decisions against govt, he will be ensured a cosy retired life.

Thanks a lot Nairji for bringing out the reality of what judges do and say. Judiciary always delays. Are we having the same quality of judges like we did in 50s and 60s? probably not. Some years ago we saw a CJI had rape allegations against him. The collegium recruitment system is still in vogue. There may be some improvement if we have all india merit test like IAS/IPS for judicial appointments

He promised to improve the system so that justice can be delivered quickly - and he pursued with GOI to appoint judges (more than 20% of the strength) which is not the case earlier and also did his best to improve the infrastructure at lower courts. These will have far more positive effect on the judiciary system than the cases pointed out. He analysed problems and proposed to improve systems like IT infrastructure etc to speed up the process, and also judgements in local language so that common man understand. The article should also have covered the positive aspects also and its impact rather than projecting only negative aspects.

Good analysis. What I could understand is that Mr. N V Ramana had good intentions and expected a change in the mindset of the politicians. Unfortunately that didn't happen. Any officer with the best of intentions can do nothing if politicians don't fall in the same line. The fact that he apologized on the last day is a strong proof of his good intentions.

All said and done, he is yoing scit free without being penalized. Almost all recent times CJIs are one and the same. Dump their garbage speeches into where they deserve. Their inefficiency affects this nation in an adverse way. They should be made accountable and deserve to be punished by the people of the nation.

This man too FOOLED the People/Citizens of India while being in the office of the CJI. He kept on putting tough questions inside his courtroom and kept on making tough speeches outside his courtroom, but he never passed any tough orders or judgements in his tenure. Resultantly, the political lordship amended the rules for benefiting the retired CJI & judges of the Supreme Court of India. On being the Chief Custodian of the Constitution of India he was duty bound to uphold it for the people/citizens of India, but he didn't do so. Infact, their PENSIONS, etc. must be STOPPED for such treachery‼

The lavelin case is pending, the case will be taken up shortly after his retirement. It was pending since long with him. He also wanted to cancel the anti national law. Our high court Judge Justice Devan Ramachandran is the people Judge. His judgement is for the benefit of the common man.

Well said. I have luking feeling that a pre-condition, that he shouldn't hear those important cases, was laid before elevating him as CJI. I am sure that, that condition will apply to the future CJI's too. Maybe if the present government falls, there is a chance, otherwise NO.

Sujit ji, I could not agree with you more, when Justice Ramana became CJI he brought with him a lot of hope that this will be a CJI who will do something for upholding the constitutional values and be fair and just. But unfortunately like you pointed out, he did make the right kind of speech and observations, but lacked the will to convert it into tangible action. I am still waiting for a judge who has the courage that was show that law is actually equal for all.

Jagan Mohan Reddy complained to then CJI, SC that Justice Maheswari who was CJ at AP High Court was working against his government with the support of then Senior SC Judge Ramana. This lead to transfer of Justice Maheswari transferred from AP High Court and when Justice Ramana became CJI, he appointed Justice Maheswari as SC Judge. When I see comments in other fora, I found that Many people believed that he was influencing and rewarding lower court Judges.

What u said is true sir, if he is a people's justice atleast he would have done some thing regarding the listing of cases before the bench , many of cases since last two year's not getting listed and listing date going on changing, even the case came into the causelist also not got listed before the bench many times, justice delayed is the justice denied, many of normal citizens are getting justice years of years due to not getting listed, (our case in supreme court not got listed from2019 to till now before the bench once also) being a chief justice he had not stopped the atrocities in the registery court , he passed all his period as chief justice by giving useless statements and exposure to media

I expected much more from him... like on electoral bonds.. delhi state case... etc.... but for such imp cases constitutional benches were necessary and shortage of judges could be binding his hands....his first priority was to fill vacancies... pls dnt forget what kind of CJI's were the last 3...

Former CJI said the truth but was afraid of government. Hence indecisive and indirectly helped the government. Supreme court is a great institution only when there is justice. Justice for all the citizens irrespective of caste or status. Justice biased has become the hall mark of the present day or indecisive and indirectly helping the government pursuing persecution policies

Justice Ramana made lofty statements but seldom did his actions match his words. Seldom did he walk the talk. He surely did better than his two predecessors. Still, a very poor showing. They all seem tamed and devoid of the cojones to truly make a difference.
