Also.. the reason this music takes you on such a journey is because it is generally built on classical music theory rather than just repetitive simplistic catchy hooks that are prevalent in the more pop-oriented or rap-oriented musical styles. Not hating on those styles because they are just as valid musically as the more complex metal styles... the target audience is just different for each. When people who have been fans of the pop-oriented styles get bored with the simplicity of that style and they are introduced to more complex music of Metal they tend to be blown away by the complexity if they truly listen and not judge it based upon the instruments and/or speed itself. It would be the same for expansion past pop-oriented towards blues, jazz, big band, ragtime, or classical music. Each of those are more complex than the majority of current pop-oriented music and would have similar effect on the listener if they were so inclined to give those styles a chance. I have, personally, been most comfortable in the comfort of Metal music for nearly 40 years now and I keep finding new forms of Metal to enjoy even to this day.

The official video took footage from an old movie called I think Johnny Got His Gun (?) about a soldier who lost most of his body and senses from a landmine explosion. That is a literal interpretation but for maybe the first half of the song I could also see it being about mental/psychological ravages of war on a person.

Listened to this song since ‘88 and it never fails to evoke despair and frustration of this mans horrific situation, one of the few songs that can make me cry.

So the meaning of the lyrics: This song is directly based on a novel, called "Johnny Got His Gun". It's set in World War I, and the main character is a wounded soldier who wakes up in a hospital after having all of his limbs as well as his eyes, ears, and mouth destroyed when he gets hit with an artillery shell. (Though the song says it was a landmine.) So he can't move, he can't see or hear anything, and he can't talk. He's still alive, but he's essentially trapped inside his completely immobilized body, with no ability to communicate and no outside sensations. All he can do is keep going over his memories of how he got into this situation. Thus he's in constant agonizing pain but the doctors can't do anything to help him (unless they kill him, which he kind of wishes they would do) because he has no way to even tell them about it. In a broader, metaphorical sense, I think the main theme of the song is loneliness and isolation, and how pain is worse when you have to suffer all by yourself. EDIT: If you like this song, definitely check out "For Whom the Bell Tolls", which is similarly based on Ernest Hemingway's novel about the Spanish Civil War.

There's no way for him to even tell the difference between being awake or asleep. He imagines a whole new universe in his mind. The doctors assumed he was a vegetable and later are horrified to find he's conscious. His only way to communicate is Morse Code. You remind me a lot of the channel Lost in Vegas. They’re hip hop/rap fans who started reacting to metal music like 2 years ago or so. It’s just magical watching new listeners see the power of Metallica and metal music. You should absolutely listen to Holy Wars by Megadeth next. Dave Mustaine, Megadeth’s guitarist and vocalist, was Metallica’s original guitarist and he SHREDS. If you’re feeling really adventurous and willing to dive into more heavier material, you should listen to Gojira, particularly Heaviest Matter of the Universe or Flying Whales. That band is unreal in terms of talent, intensity, and depth. If not, then I’d definitely recommend War Pigs by Black Sabbath (the fathers of heavy metal), Holy Diver by Dio (easily one of, if not the, best voices in metal), or the Trooper by Iron Maiden.

As metal is a genre so wide and has so many subgenres, there are several ways to get into it: · Listening to Metallica: just because "metal" is in the name of the band. It's not a bad way to do it, since Metallica introduces deep and meaningful lyrics and almost classical feel to their melodies... but it's thrash metal, so you maybe don't understand truly what metal is. · Listening to the classics: it's how the genre was born. I'm sure its been covered here but I figured I would add what I know about not only the song you covered but all of Metallica's lyrics because I actually wrote a finals paper about them 27 years ago and Metallica was a unique band not only for the 80s and 90s when they dominated the metal scene but still today there's never been a band other than maybe Led Zeppelin that wrote about very real things to many people while doing so in an almost documentation fashion about things like war, drug addiction, ( aka Master of Puppets "chop your breakfast on a mirror" line). Even further, Metallica has been a form of literary research that several universities like San Francisco University have used in there master's degree programs for English lit and other literary studies due to Metallica's particular affinity for the writings of Ernest Hemingway, whom was the inspiration for the song One. It describes a soldier that is in a military Hospital recovering from not just wounds but he's a quadruple amputee no arms no legs and he is describing his feelings of absolute worthless existence he can't talk he can hear, he can feel but he can't express with the typical gestures that a human would make he's just a brain a heart and a body without limbs lying in absolute darkness because he can't see, and he wants this to end. The band wrote this at a young age yes but they weren't 19 as your video States they did Creeping Death and Kill am all, Ride the Lightning,those were in their teens and early early twenties and this song and the ones from this album we're done in 1990 and it was released in that year or 1991 but they were near 30 i would say. I would have to go back and look at the chronology but I know I started listening to them in like 87 and they were some wild-ass teenagers but by the time they were in their early 20s they were a force that no one had ever been able to compare because for the first time a metal band was playing super fast, yet super clean sounds that almost sounded stereo quality in their live shows because they learned the art, for guitarists at least, of playing their cords over the other persons chords in many parts of their song so it was like a live performance with the same effect as dubbed chord overlays as in a studio session with extra heavy cord segments being played by multiple guitars like James Hetfield going from rhythm into a borderline lead or going into a very chunky nearly bass sound for several segments then they all went back to the individual parts to their music with expertise from all 4. I mean Cliff Burton what's the best bassist anybody had ever heard. Lars Ulrich is an absolute top 10 drummer of all time. Kirk Hammett is one of my personal favorites because of his really tasteful choices in playing a lead that also had great song description and wasn't just some wailing metal lead guitar that a lot of speed metal bands did back then and then James Hetfield who still to this day thinks of himself as a s***** singer, others thought he was one of the best metal singers because in combination of his voice and their chosen subject writings, Metallica was the first metal band to right about real s*** and bring a New Era to Metal. Metallica became the new Led Zeppelin not because they sounded alike, rather due to the band as a whole being something new to an genre of music that hadn't been done with an intelligence and skill set to be taken seriously and that hadn't been heard prior. They sort of recreated metal, at least the thrash metal segments and separated from the death metal bands where you might have incredible guitarists or some other musician, it was cancelled out by the typical death metal singer and the growl that made lyrics mostly moot. Metallica was truly unique metal band and I just wanted to say to the guy in video that does the review kudos to you for finding Metallica I'm glad you enjoyed it I hope you'll listen to all of their albums from late 80s to late 90s especially. Here's a free tip you might find as enjoyable as millions of kids did. Next time you're at your house and it's one of those really shity stormy days really overcast thunder rain put Ride the Lightning on sit by yourself or with some good buddies and just give yourself about an hour and 20 minutes and listen to that album all the way through and I think you'll have the same feeling you did from just listening to One. cheers!

They weren't 21 when Puppets came out - more like when Kill Em All album which was 82. Puppets came out 4 years later. So in 87-88 when One was released, they were about 27.

From the start the guitar is his pain, the drums and bass are his beating heart as he holds his breath, his voice is begging God in darkness to stop his endless waking pain & the solos are his flesh and nerves searing in agony. He is not in a coma he feels everything they do to his body but he can't speak. you should see the music video this is based on a book in the book they stick a wire into his brain and i dont want to spoil it because the video ads so many layers of depth that i'd like you to see it (maybe you already have im speaking from the present into the past as if it was now lol) mplease see the video. they bought the rights to the movie just so they could make a video about the book.

Nice to see you enjoying the classics! If you want to try and get into death metal at some point, I’d recommend starting with the song “Evisceration Plague” by Cannibal Corpse. It’s pretty heavy and all the vocals are screams and growls, but it has solid guitar riff that’s easy to follow and pretty groovy as well.
