Just a quick FYI, the bit at 9:48 is a bass solo. Cliff Burton played a crucial role in redefining what bass is and what it can be in metal music. Out of the entire band, he was the ONLY one who went to music school to study it professionally. He was the one who made Metallica shine like it did back in the day. Unfortunately he passed away on the promotional tour for Master of Puppets in a bus accident in 1986. These sort of events just stand to show that the most beautiful flowers do indeed get picked first. I watched this documentary a little while ago, about Metallica, the making of their albums, the members they have and had. There was this segment where Kirk talked about Cliff and his experience working with him. At one point he mentioned how he should have died instead of him and that he has a form of survivor's guilt. They had bunk beds in the bus they were touring in. Kirk and Cliff drew cards to pick in which bed they wanted to sleep in. Cliff having drawn the high card chose to sleep in Kirk's bed. Upon crashing, Cliff was the only casualty. It pains me to think about it. I wouldn't have wanted Kirk to die or anything, but neither did I want Cliff to either. Ever since that crash, the band was not the same. There are unfortunately no live concerts of Cliff playing Orion. I'm sure everyone wished there was at least one. But he still blessed us with beautiful music. And I'm thankful for that and even if he's someone I never got to see or live in the same time period, I miss him. I know I'm not the only one.

Dan Marshall He wrote all of it. Why do you think the bass part is quintessential to the song’s core? While the other instrumentations aren’t lifeless, the song feels lifeless without the bass. On the other hand, if it’s just the bass playing, the song will still feel full of life. Most Metallica songs are not like that. Master of Puppets, for example, the bass just adds icing to the cake

@@fanamatakecick97 I'm going off the writing credit and Andiry Vasalenko's analysis of styles of writing. The intro and middle section have Cliff's melodic fingerprints, but the chugging riffs are very Hetfield.

Agree. And the if no one know. The on an interview I read of Kirk Hammet he said that he did the solo part of the song. Then he left and cliff stayed and he did his and stole that spot. And they removed the solo Kirk did. And cliff owned it...obviously he wasn’t pissed. He told it as an anecdote

Pause all you like. We love the song and we very likely have it...and many, many others...in our collection(s). We’re watching your journey into Metal. Anyone who complains about the pauses is not paying attention to your journey, so don’t worry too much about those who are here for themselves rather than you. All that said, DO NOT pause during a solo. We support and encourage your journey... but not during the solos 🤣🤣🤣

Metallica is very much classical music with individual movements, interludes, and virtuoso solos along the way (granted most of Kirk Hammett's solos are the pentatonic blues scale played really fast) . The middle part always reminds me of chamber music to be honest and the bass line in that part is super melodic. That said, you can also hear the influence of Jazz/Blues in this song because the band is exploring a repeating melodic idea in what is almost a conversation with each other as each guitar player puts their style on an individual solo and bassist Cliff Burton (RIP) shows the world why he was so revered with his wild bass solo and beautiful harmonic wah-pedal bass. I am not saying the band didn't produce some amazing songs after Cliff Burton's death, but they definitely lost that feeling of classical music movements and the jazz-like sensibility for interplay among musicians. Orion remains an amazing metal fusion song and I am glad that you enjoyed hearing Metallica at its melodic best.

I remember seeing videos of Cliff when Metallica had done the Binge and Purge box set. I can hear Cliff screwing around for the camera and growling, "F**k you, puss, fag, slut!" ((Sorry, just quoting the legendary, Cliff Burton. He was joking for the person recording him.)) Never had the pleasure of seeing him perform (except on videos of live shows), but I felt like I knew all of Metallica back then. When I obsess about something, I'm very thorough and I literally adopt it into my personality. I even picked up Lars' accent for a while because it just seemed to rub off on me. Yeah, sometimes OCD can be fun.

The Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning albums were masterpieces. ...And Justice for All is as well, but not quite the pinnacle that Puppets was. If you listen to those 3 albums, then anything from the Black album forward, you will not believe the same band made them. Not that any of them suck, they just aren't nearly the same lyrical or musical content. Not even in the same league. The song "Ride the Lightning" has some excellent transitions and guitar work in it. Worth a listen.

The Album, Master of Puppets, saved my life. I already knew it was epic. Thru my senior year, I listened to it thru my Sony Walkman with bass boost. Then I wanted to go to school to better myself. I quit drinking and when on to junior college, not really knowing of which direction to go. In 1987, I lost my mom to alcoholism. The last time I saw her and talked to her, I told her I didn't want her to come around drunk no more. When the news broke that she passed, I went off, trashing my dorm room.....I was alcohol free for a few months...I saw a fifth of Jack and I slammed it down and put my headphones on to Master of Puppets. Since then, swimming pools of alcohol later, i finally forgave myself of what happened with my mom. I drank for 30 years, finally putting the bottle down January 16, 2007, the anniversaryof my Mom's funeral. I had my first born in 1990. I named him Joshua Orion Rico. I also lost him in 2018 to alcoholism. I missed them both, but I listened to Master of Puppets, I think of them everything, ALWAYS. To this day, Metallica always brings me up. Bad times. Good times. Metallica is in my life always. You have a subscriber now. Next live should be The Thing That Should Not Be, Seattle 89 Live. That whole concert is epic. You seen the Moscow 91 Enter Sandman and liked it, you love this one Thanks for the videos 🤘

Orion is like a "pick your own adventure" book. It takes you places and every journey is a little different... There are a lot of these journey songs from Metallica and there is something for every mood you could possibly ever feel. They never bothered to do anything they didn't like or want to... They just did them and the crowd will find them. And find they did. Try "Anesthesia (pulling teeth)" from their first album "Kill em all" for their most radio worthy song of all time... Fun fact, their first album was initially going to be called something else, but they changed it a bit...

Try some of the stuff off Death Magnetic. It’s underrated and actually pretty awesome.

Hi man! Your reactions are priceless, without a doubt. I can see you like heart touching songs such as Fade to Black and One. I would recommend Unforgiven to keep with the metallica vibe. Now, if you want a deeper song i recommend you In My Darkest Hour by Megadeth. It was a song written and singed by a man called Dave Mustaine. He was a lead guitarist for Metallica, but he was kicked out before they got to record an album. This song (in my darkest hour) was written by Mustaine when he heard about Cliff Burton's (metallica's 2nd bassist) death. It has such a deep meaning. I recomend you also read or watch some of the hystory of both Metallica and Megadeth (since they have too much in common. You cant read Metallica's history without mentioning Megadeth and viceversa). Love your reactions bro! You are now part of our metal family!

Hey bud, in my experience few people ever bother starting a solo over.. it's the pausing right before - losing the vibe - then starting in cold, that seems to get people 'riled'. Now can someone get my man here some Bose headphones?? Metal is best listened to with quality audio gear, so many layers!!! ;)

Metallica - Harvester of Sorrow, If you listen to For Whom The Bell Tolls, you should watch the "Cliff 'Em All" Version. Cliff Burton was an amazing bassist who died far too soon!!!
