Edmonton Train Ride
The Edmonton Train - what it's like and how it works, I am showing you first hand in this video and you will soon see that you need this video so you can be way more prepared than I was!
I haven’t taken the Edmonton Train in maybe a decade. It's a little different to say the least. I wish I had more positive things to say about this recent experience but I don’t. Well, I guess on a positive note, I didn’t die. So there’s that.
So the Edmonton Train is known locally as the LRT which stands for Light Ral Transit. We currently have two lines in service and another line with a different type of train that is expected to start operating in the summer of 2022. It's called the Valley Line, it is intended to be street level and go with the follow of traffic.
Welcome to my KZfaq Channel a great resource from Edmonton, AB Canada Housing and Communities. My name is Jenn McPhillamey, Real Estate Associate with RE/MAX River City.

By the by, when I used to ride the LRT in the 80's, there was an announcer who would call out "Staadium, Staaadium Station". Everyone would smile ever so brightly. Remember it to this day. Had a tumour blow in my brain at work !! Couldn't remember anybody's name, only that I was married. (To good old what's his name ). 2 brain surgeries later. have I got a headache LOL and I seem to remember a hurricane ??? Again, thanks for showing the changes. You are delightful.

One big tip I have that I use, is go to Churchill station. The two main entryways are through city centre mall and the tix gift shop. For the mall go to where the escalators go down and up, go down and enter the parkade and keep walking you’ll see a sign that says Churchill station and keep following the tunnel. This is a much safer option then the pedways for the other stations. And the tix gift shop you’ll see signs that say proof of payment area. Just follow those. Oh you can also use a bus pass because their actually transit passes.

Interesting video that popped up on my feed! I use the LRT daily for work; I am back in core office life again. Home base is around Greenfield/Duggan/Rideau Park, and its unfortunate that the City of Edmonton decided not to go ahead with the 40th Ave stop. However, with budget constraints it didn't make sense to go ahead with it. Anyways, in 2021 CoE went ahead with the overdue bus network re-design. The more frequent bus schedules in the area make it very convenient to get to the Southgate LRT, many routes go ever 5-7 mins, so realistically, there is no need for a stop on 40th. Walking to Southgate in the winter is definitely not ideal, unless you want to bike down the paths on 111th street, but the buses do come frequently so its really not that bad in the winter; bundle up. Overall, the LRT has become a big issue in Edmonton, but I wouldn't say safety is a major concern, but it has gotten worse since the beginning of the pandemic. I've used the LRT since 2011, and never had any issues. City Council is looking at ways to reduce the loitering in the stations, but overall I feel it has gotten significantly better over the last few months. Are there improvements that ETS could make? Yes, many, but the CoE needs provincial support and they are not getting it at the moment. The Southeast Valley Line will open soon; we'll see how that line runs. Once, CoE sees commitment from the provincial government on other issues, transit safety should resolve itself, My two sense.

Thank you for your insight!! It’s always good to hear from someone who takes the LRT regularly. I didn’t know about the increased bus service in that area. That is also great information!! Thanks again for commenting and watching!

@@edmontonexpert yes, the transit is excellent in the papastew ward. I've taken a bus from commerce place to Whyte Ave for a medical appointment, and gotten there as fast if I would have driven. Walkability and transit are big pluses in papastew and definitely why I made the decision to invest in Duggan back in 2019. Get a home in the area before they are out of reach; currently going fast!

@@drshallow69 absolutely! It was designed in the last budget cycle under a composite capital profile with a bunch of other ETS requirements but was cut by Don Iveson's council. It would need to be proposed again by administration for it to be reconsidered.

Yes it seems to be the case. I live downtown and never really minded the diversity but it’s getting really bad. No ls I am not just hearing about stuff on the news, assaults are happening to people I know. Hopefully the cities new partnership with a private security company and other measures they have announced will help transit and downtown feel more safe

Have you ever ridden the 747 bus from Edmonton Airport to Century Park Station then taken the LRT to downtown? This seems very feasible for visitors flying in from other places, not unlike taking Bus 100 in Calgary to Westwinds/McKnight Station then riding the C-Train into their downtown. More optimal would be like the set-up in Seattle, WA or Portland, OR where the light rail runs all the way to the airport proper.

I have been riding the LRT and ETS transit since 2012; until 2019, I felt safe on transit at night as a female passenger. Recently things have gotten unsafe in the transit system because there are more homeless people and increased tensions with security. The problem with the homeless is the systematic due provincial government getting rid of the safe consumption sites and slashing critical social funding that helps these people. As a result, these people are more likely to go to spaces like the LRT to do drugs, so if they have an overdose, they would be more likely to be found. Practically as of (2022), I ride the train only in the Belgravia and south during the night. During daylight hours, I would travel everywhere but avoid getting off Government Centre, Central station, Bay Enterprise and Clairview.

Thank you for your perspective!! 😁 Yes the downtown underground stations seem a little unsafe even during the day. I took the LRT in the 90s from university station to Churchill station to get to a high school I went to in grade 10. Even then Churchill had problems. Maybe it’s the nature of underground stations? One passenger told me his wife feels very unsafe on the train in the underground between stations as there is no where to escape to. One time this guy was touching her and there was nothing she could do. This was at night. He said she didn’t have any troubles during the day. As for the homeless people, since the pandemic, it’s been worse and there has been more crime. I have heard it’s due to program cuts and peace officer cuts.

@@edmontonexpert Global TV had an interesting piece on it. Users are shooting up on LRT in case they overdose and want to live/be rescued. Sounds like a perfect reason to reopen the safe injection sites as well as upgrade the security around all transit properties... I.e. community EPS offices at all ETS stations...

Why ETS doesn't have a weekly transit pass option is also weird... The best way to travelling around a city? Get a weekly pass! NYC was $33 for a week!

They do it’s monthly though and you can use them on the lrt but most people consider it a bus pass. I believe it’s 100 for adults and 60 for kids.
