Justin says it exactly right, there’s different bits of gear for different drummers. For me, as someone needing to use a small rig as possible, the SX Pro now combining the importing of samples and having a hi hat control to play it as a portable kit is the game changer I’ve been longing for. My current set up is exactly as Justin said with both the SX and Octapad to get both functions. It could potentially even replace the handsonic as it’s sensitive enough for hand triggering! Potentially merging the best bits of all 3 of those pieces of hardware into 1 was something I’d never thought Roland would do, but looks like I was wrong. For me, when considering all of that, the PRO name and the price tag is completely justified

This is great for professionals on stage.. It’s also a fantastic option for a smaller electronic kit being more portable for quick rehearsals and jamming. I’d love to see Justin make a kit with the possibilities of all of those extra inputs plus the hihat input.. & using the RTom heads & triggers 👍🏼

*Great review! As the SPD-30 Octapad is now getting a bit long in the tooth, it would be nice if Roland came out with an updated version, perhaps called the **_SPD-40,_** using more of the technology from the V-Drum line of modules, though I wouldn't expect V-Pad mesh designs for the internal triggers. They could even include four extra narrow bar triggers along the top ridge, like the three included with the SPD-S/SX sampler units, though it should then be called something like the **_Dodecapad,_** instead the **_Octapad,_** as it would then have twelve internal pads instead of only eight...* 🤔

The fact that the "pro" can support the HH foot switch is why it's on my Christmas list. I would like to be able to use the SPD-SX with a couple of foot switches for bass and HH for a super minimalist drumkit. Honestly that's the only reason I need the "pro" over the normal SPD-SX though. It's shame the normal one doesn't support the HH switch. I also looked at the Octapad but I really like the bar triggers that wrap over the top of the SPD-SX and I've limited space to mount a multipad on my kit - the Octapad is a little too wide.

Those rtom triggers seem very similar to the pintech RS5 triggers; even priced the same. I like the rtoms quick clip on design better than the pintech's lug mount, but worry they'd fly off easier.

for those exclusively playing gum rubber e-pads: ( i have made a break though years ago ) get heavy hickory marching band sticks, about 0.720" diameter, and Cut them down to one foot in length ( leaving the tip end alone of course ) the larger tip spreads out the energy and gets more rubber involved in the rebound; that, and the weight is similar to a rock stick, but with less pivotal inertia.....try it.

Hey Justin Tnx for the update, always the best. I’ve been waiting a long time for Roland to make this machine for many reasons most of them are mentioned in the video. What did you mean by “many drummers were using the spd ax with a drum module”? I’ve been trying to hack this machine (the now old spd sx) in any way , mostly in terms of more outputs and so on. would love to hear a way around it that I haven’t seen before!

@@ableton_live_well I don't care about what it replaces in Roland's lineup. My point is comparing its features against the 4 year old Alesis Strike Multipad. I'm not seeing anything it does that the Alesis couldn't already do, what am I missing?

@@BecomingProductions I’d recommend watching Justin’s video comparing the SX to the Strikepad kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qLtme8Z-t7mrqKs.html there was a fair amount of difference already, then watch comparisons between the SX and SX PRO. Roland has a great one. You’ll see there is so much difference in functionality. Whether they make it worth for you and what you need is an entirely different conversation. But that’s how to answer your question of what the differences are.

The Pro s Hi-hat input alone is worth the price over the Multistrike. I bought the Alesis Strike Multipad to build a mini kit. And every external pad works perfectly except the hi-hat. Well, come on Alesis, the hi hat is an essential part of any drum kit. Ekit or not. Alesis lack of support of the Multpad stinks. I ll be selling my Strike Multipad. I am curious if loops n imported samples on the Pro can be slowed down or sped up live. Cause that, imo, was another miss on Alexis s part.

Those triggers work pretty well with the black hole. I’ve managed to use Roland triggers, but they keep falling off at some point. The BH triggers stay and never move. I’m still having issues with the kick drum, don’t know why. Still, a great product for the price of one Roland trigger.

Oh man, I kinda wish I hadn't sold my RTom heads now. I loved them but couldn't figure out how to use them with triggers. But I agree with you. They need a 2 zone trigger for sure. But as far as the new SPD-SX Pro is concerned all I can say is WOW. Very cool. I'm going to use a hybrid setup with my new band when we start playing out in the next month or two and I could actually get a lot of use out of all those new features. The lack of inputs and outputs on the last model had been holding me back. I could definitely use a customizable metronome, and backing tracks and sound samples from our recordings would be great too. Unfortunately, I get lost in the tech side of all this great gear. Still I have a virtually unused Yamaha EAD but now I'm thinking maybe sell it and get this to replace it.

what did you think about the feel of the Rtom pads? to me they felt a little thin and springy. But I haven't played one in awhile
@Rhythmic1
@Rhythmic1 Жыл бұрын
I haven't played them for awhile myself so I don’t actually remember. I do however remember really liking them for the aforementioned reasons. But at the time I had never played on anything other than mylar heads (sometimes hybrid with ddrum and Roland triggers) and a little Yamaha DTX 532 I occasionally used for tracking and learning arrangements (still love the silicon head btw). So I really didn’t have anything to compare them to back then and was happy with what I got. It was a lot better than the tiny rubber tom pads and wobbly little kick pad on the Yamaha by leaps and bounds. They do have a tensioning system but I can’t remember if that did much either and again I was plenty happy with them anyway. It’s a long story but I didn’t use them too much because shortly after I got them I made a decision to go all in on electronic drums instead and pieced together what is essentially a TD-50KVX by starting with the digital pack Roland used to sell. That was the point at which I was trying to figure out if I could put triggers on them or not. But there was no information I could find on that so I went with a set of PD-125 pads and a converted bass drum instead. Afterwards they sat on my shelf until I sold them a year or two ago.

I’ve had a few of Roland’s trigger pads in the past spds-s , spd 30 ect. but had to sell them for one big reason. the zones within each pad were not sensitive evenly within the square. IE a direct center hit would always trigger, but a hit closer to an edge might not register a strike at all. ( my prehistoric Drumkat Dk10 with its FSR SENSORS will respond evenly from center to edge). Roland claims more accurate triggering on the new “pro” version. Has the uneven triggering problem finally been solved? thanks

After owning the SPD-SX and SPD-30 and the Alesis Strike MultiPad Percussion Pad, it looks like Roland is applying a "look " and function similar the the Alesis. The problem I have is it would have been better to incorporate the functions of the SPD-SX Pro and apply it to the layout of the SPD-30. I'd rather have the controls to the side of the kit , so you could play a full drumset on the SPD-30 without smacking the control panel, which is now , even larger on the Pro than the older SX. Oh well...

I find this argument hilarious to be honest. The strike pad copied the SPD and put more modern tech in it. And that’s exactly what Roland have now done to update their product. Who has really copied who? And the SX Pro will had so much more functionality than the Strike. There are other SX clones out there too, other companies knew what the industry standard was and the reasons why it was! People need to stop hating Roland just cus it’s the trend to.

@@ableton_live_well It's trendy to hate Roland? Silly, considering they make so much great stuff! I own a TD30-KV, TR8-S, SPD-SX, A88, among others. I'm by no means knocking Roland, and I'm sure this PRO model is going to be excellent, but let's remain objective. They've not innovated here as their marketing would suggest. They've iterated where the Alesis broke ground with the Strike MultiPad. I know this because I own BOTH a Strike MultiPad and SPD-SX. And the difference was jarring. At the end of the day, buy what makes you happy and helps you make great music... brand loyalty aside.
