This is a wonderful tool, all these kids really needed is someone to teach them at the rate they learn at. It also boosts thier self confidence.

Brilliant. One of the clearest in-class examples of a teacher who uses technology to aid deep learning in Maths. I wish this for so many eager students in South Africa - especially rural South Africa. I commend your commitment.

After watching the video, there are several ways that high school math teacher, Peter McIntosh, uses in order to engage the students in his class and help them succeed in algebra. The main topic question I got out of this video is, how can I solve an algebra problem? Ms. McIntosh starts by explaining that each student previously failed algebra, had poor math habits, and low understanding. In his class create a higher student accountability through Khan Academy. Khan Academy is a program that offers hints, videos, student tracking, and a coaching mode. With all of these features put together, the students are forced to continuously practice, get constant feedback, and progress at their own rate. If they are unsure, they can use the hint feature to allow them to see the next step in the problem. If they are a student who works better with visuals, they can watch a video. Lastly, they can also talk and work with peers if they get stuck at a certain part. Each of these three ways not only targets different multiple intelligences of students, but it also allows the students to succeed in a way that they work and learn best at. Through Khan academy, Mr. McIntosh has seen students become more interested in algebra. The students crave success. Mr. McIntosh observed the average test scores improve by over 30% after switching to this new method. Instead of the students just simply trying to find an answer, they learned what resources worked best for them in order to help them succeed.

I am a Spanish teacher...I would love to see in my students the same intensity and effort that I see in these students.

Wow. This is great. I love it how the students can learn to take ownership of their learning and how the teacher can monitor the students performance but one thing that makes me wonder is that will students be able to answer such mathematics problem in the actual exam? Without the help of interactive subject-mastery tools like Khan Academy I mean..

This seems great for procedural knowledge. I worry that students are jumping right to hints, but if the current goal is simply "solving systems of equations," then maybe that's ok. Still, how do you take the next step and foster the conceptual knowledge. Do these students know WHY solving systems of equations is important? Can they take a real-life situation and create the system before having to solve it?
