We chased the mighty steamer Edward L. Ryerson a lot in 2006-2007, and part of the fun was hearing Capt. Eric Treece sound the powerful whistles. Here's a compilation of salutes from those seasons. Video by Roger LeLievre.

To be honest for the longest time, I've never really cared for the vessel's peculiar design, in fact I kinda thought it was a little bit ugly. But now that I've grown and seen the light, I now understand the beauty of her design and her graceful voice. Hopefully someday we can get her back onto the lakes.

That "peculiar" streamlined design seems a throwback to pre-WW II art deco style used for everything from art, architecture and furniture to trains, ships and autos. The streamlining was considered graceful and elegant. The old Milwaukee Clipper car ferry was built with similar lines.

Here's a fun fact. The United States had three big horns! Two Leslie Tyfon 575's which were primarily used on ocean liners and warships, but there was a Leslie 425 in the front stack next to one of the 575's so it had a similar tone albeit deeper with the 575.

I read an article and saw a conceptual drawing of the Ryerson with a stern mounted boom, some years ago. It looked great but, according to the article the shape of her cargo holds were not conducive for conversion to a self unloader without costly modifications. Sad because she is a legend on the Great Lakes. Even her engine room design and layout had a pleasing look to it and permitted the Engineer an unrestricted view of the plant.

If they ever end up converting her to a self unloader, I hope they do at least one of the two, if not BOTH. (But either or wouldn’t upset me.) Give her an aft facing boom. (If that’s even possible, I think she’d look better with one.) And don’t give her the average piston air horn. I understand it saves steam which in turn saves oil, but the steam horns and looks as a straight decker are without a doubt what gives the Ryerson its fame as one of the best looking freighters. If you’re going to turn her to a self unloader, at least keep the voice.
