Six years ago, Edward Snowden shocked the world when he leaked a trove of secret documents about how the United States had built a massive surveillance apparatus to collect every single phone call, text message and email, and pry into the private lives of every person on Earth. He has just published a memoir titled “Permanent Record.” He talks about how the government initially attempted to say that he was just an outside contractor and not a key figure, but he describes the central role contractors play in the intelligence community.

@@MundaSquire it was Bush who implemented mass surveillance in the first place. As you know, he's Republican. And it was Trump who even in 2013 spoke out AGAINST Snowden and did not pardon him in 2020. He, too, is Republican. So no, the problem does not lie with Dems only. In fact, Obama even cut down on surveillance after the 2013 revelations. He obviously has blood on his hands nevertheless, and him not pardoning Snowden was an act of cowardice. My point is, both parties are guilty of mass surveillance.

Everything about everyone is on the computer. Some spy companies charge you a fee and will give you the information you want. past and present address, phone numbers, family members, neighbors, criminal records, etc. type in your browser, the name of anyone you know. You will be given an enticing amount for free and then everything, when you pay. Frightening!

I suspect Mr. Snowden is spot-on in his observation, analyses, and values regarding what is going on with creeping authoritarianism. I just bought the Kindle version of his book, and am looking forward to a grim read. But one problem I have with too many pundits, journalists, whiste blowers, and academics ... is that this is inherently multi-disciplinary problem involving all domains of thought ... from group psychology, to culture wars, to anthropology, to biology, and so on. I would love to see a mixed martial arts match between Ed Snowden and Frans de Waal on the roots of human morality found in social primate empathy. Would be a hell of a collaborative match. And Amy Goodman .... marry me!

Mr Snowden: What we have is not "creeping authoritarianism". It present and long-standing authoritarianism. I am surprised that a smart fellow like you did not know that before you decided to work for quasi-military agencies of the US government before the Iraq War. Did you think the US supported coup in Guatemale was national defense? Did you think that turning the Republic of Iran over to the Shah was national defense? Was the Bay of Pigs invasion national defense? How did you think the US aggression in Vietnam took place? How about the US instigated coup in Chile? Was that for our national defense? Did you think that taking over from the French was national defense? Did you think that turning the Republic of Iran over to the Shah was national defense? Why did it take you until 2013 to realize the nature of American "democracy"? They say, "Better late than never", but you were awfully late my heroic friend! I just can't watch this guy anymore. He is living-large in Russia, thanks to what I'm sure he has "traded" Russia for his protection. He chose to travel only to non-extradition nations while on the run, and now he wants to sell you a book (be careful with those on-line credit card orders). My guess is he can only remain under the protection of Russia if he teaches them his hacker talents. He is a slippery worm who is now a full-fledged Russian Asset.
