EES Excavations at Amarna Part 2: The House of Hatiay

Among the many treasures kept in the Egypt Exploration Society's Lucy Gura Archive is the 'film record' of excavations at Tell el-Amarna, which was made over the course of three seasons from 1930 to 1933.
The excerpts used here focus on the excavation of house T34.1 in the north suburb of the city. The house had been built by Akhenaten's overseer of works, Hatiay, and was notable for its series of doorways built in stone rather than mudbrick, one of which was found to be ' simply smothered in inscriptions', which provided the name of the home-owner.

Agreed. Sadly, available resources have been insufficient to ensure the long term preservation of the physical remains of the houses - many 100s of which were discovered during this work - so we must be grateful that they were documented so thoroughly and survive virtually in records such as this film.

whose blanket is that at 2:13 ? "at some point it seems to have been covered up with a blanket" - does that mean it's an ancient blanket or is it part of the pendelton's crew?

I'm sorry if the film gave you the impression that the house was destroyed - this was not the case. It was left as it was found which was perhaps not ideal - it should have been back-filled in order to protect it from natural erosion - but it was certainly not destroyed. In any case however the director of the current research at the site, Barry Kemp, tells me that the house has now disappeared under modern agricultural land so backfilling would only have saved it for a few more decades

Another reason never to return the Nefertiti bust. The Egyptian governement is not interested in preservering their heritage. They are interested in making a quick buck.
