KZfaq absolutely has the technology to nuke these. Make no mistake, if KZfaq wanted them gone, they'd be gone (along with the crypto scam comments and scam ads). KZfaq will have tested removal of the spam and found that it somehow impacted their bottom line (I assume riling users up somehow slightly increases watch time). That sweet, sweet watch time is worth so much more to them than any negative consequences on their users (including financial impact way beyond the level it could be improving their bottom line in many cases).

I have noticed those bots around for ages (years, not months). KZfaq *could* implement something that identifies "sexy" account pictures, but it would be expensive. I run a retro computer channel and I get comments that will mention something like Pacman or make a very generic comment related to computer games. On closer inspection it can often be a porn bot but there's no link. Not sure what the aim is other than to post legitimate (but clearly auto generated) comments before spamming larger channels.
@threeMetreJim
@threeMetreJim 5 ай бұрын
Funny that KZfaq still allows links in the about section for unverified accounts, but has stopped you from placing them in the video description if you are unverified. All they need to do is have a bot follow links, and if adult content found at the destination (or other questionable content), then block the link. I'm sure Facebook does something similar already; the content remains, but clicking the links gives a warning, and the link isn't followed. That would put the spammers and sexbot owners off pretty quickly.

There seem to be three main defenses for these bots to avoid KZfaq's automatic removal. 1: innocuous and human-sounding comments. Their comments are generic and don't reference their account's purpose. 2: linking content from their profile description. Many creators have advertising links in their channel description, allowing them to blend in. 3: Video content on each bot account. It's surprising to see, and I shudder to think where they've collected their videos from. I think automatically removing these accounts would be very difficult, but Google happens to be one of the leading expert companies in machine learning. If this isn't a good place to focus their efforts with machine learning, I don't know what is.

How hard is it to deal with it? Not hard. Lots of sites deal with it just fine. The problem isn't a technical one, it's a manpower one. KZfaq doesn't have the manpower to dedicate to dealing with comment-spam because they've dedicated all of their developers to making the site worse liking forcing the use of a 9MB JS files for every page, making everything ugly with forced rounded-corners on _everything,_ and removing functionality to make things like managing playlists much harder. 🤷

Bots on YT have always been an issue. Most who use things like Google Ads turned off anything coming from YT years ago.

What is the point of these bots? As in - what do they do for anyone? The ones that share links are super suspicious, but you can at least imagine a low information KZfaq visitor being duped into clicking a phishing link. For the ones that don’t immediately share links it’s even harder to understand why they post, what the end goal is.

@@piguy4137 They just reuse the same generic bland "Great video" comment anyway. That means they don't get flagged as spam (like the coin scammers) quite as easily. Maybe KZfaq has taken notice, might explain the random comment deletions of late.

Like, seriously, dude? These days bots just pick the most upvoted comment they can find and re-post it ad literam as their own. OF COURSE it would look insightful...

As a generic programmer (as, no real speciality) this is still an endless job to detect those and can't be done in the typical generic way. With the AI improuvement recently, maybe it could help analysing comments. For images, working on image recognizions. KZfaq will need resources to both prepare those counter measure and hardware to process that. Then, it could be very easy to workaround. For images, the most silly thing is just to add noice to screw with the analysis.

I get a few of these types of comments, but my videos don't get many views. It's not just KZfaq. I see these on Blogger, Skype, and some Reddit subs. Pretty much any platform that allows comments with external links has this problem to some extent.

It's whackamole. I'm sure they are trying, but every time they do anything it has unintended consequences. Remember when any comment with "too many" emoji were blocked as spam? I participated in SPAM-L and spamtools back in the day, but it's like trying to exterminate ants without killing bees.

The same bot account leaves an identical comment on hundreds of different videos at a time or the same video has hundreds of identical spam comments from the same user. Those behaviors are simple to detect, regardless of the content of the comment or account photo. If KZfaq cared at all.
