Hi Dave, This HP Devices usually sends pulses to the Power-LED to simulate a beep if it don't have any Speaker in. On the HP Website you can usually look what that means (it's going from one pulse per second up to 5 pulses per second). What's it usually does is 1 puls = not used, 2 Pulses = BIOS, 3 pulses = "Hardware" (mostly CPU or RAM), 4 pulses = Thermal Problems and 5 pulses = Systemboard (HP Speech for the Motherboard).

Dave, I when I used to repair displays on macbooks, one test to verify a bad module was to shine a flashlight on the dark LCD. You can see the desktop, after boot. Then you knew it was the backlight module part. Though, with this HP, you figured out it was two issues: bad bios and bad backlight transformer. Great troubleshooting and true trash reward! :)

I had a HP laptop and it used this pin to identify the power supply used to power it. There was a 60W and a 90W version, I am not sure but I think it was just a 100ohm resistor to ground or short to ground which identified the differences. I think it was used for charge time remaining indication, or it could have done something with the charging rates of the batteries. But I may be wrong as I didn't really look into it too hard.

Years back I bought an universal car inverter for my hp compaq nx6325 laptop. It didn't worked with the delivered adapters, so I opened the original power supply and found out that it was exactly this: a bloody resistor hooked up to the middle pin and ground (but I can't remember its value). After modding the inverters cable it worked just fine.

It matter especially if this eeprom dies or you plug non-genuine power supply to Dell laptop (at least to Vostro) - you loose battery charging and keeps all cpu cores at minimum frequency without a way to bump it up…

If people noticed saying "Dave, you re-uploaded the same bloody video.". Its the same beggining but with extra kind of fix at the end! I used to find stuff back in the 90's after school like big ass TV's and arcade machines. Used to get people from school to help transport stuff home. Ah, the good old days. Best find I had was a small ish TV, CRT of course, but inside was modular. Think it was a German make. All slide out modules you could just pull out and see. So like Modulation would be one card, another Antenna, CRT driver, PSU etc. It was brilliant. Should have kept it. Was a winner but I was probably only about 12 ha ha. Was a 'Winner, winner, chicken dinner', as Dave would say.

This bug hunt was a "Bobby Dazzler" Dave! excellent sleuthing .. especially figuring out that the series resistance to the flash chip wasn't allowing the minimum current to properly power and program it near the end .. if that failed you had little else to try except removing the motherboard completely and using a code reader .. that buzzer being disconnected didn't let you hear any bios error codes but you could have just probed the connectors to see if there was some pulses to count

Happened to one of my systems a while back. Asus G75 gaming laptop suddenly went dead with just an Asus splash screen at boot and nothing else, no keyboard commands or anything, sent it back after 4 or 5 years and they replaced it free of charge. It certainly happens and when it is known on the forums that the model has that problem they bent over and fixed it instead of harvesting sour feelings about the company.
@2009dudeman
@2009dudeman 6 жыл бұрын
It happens quite frequently in the 2004-2012 era PCs in certain models. Problem era computers coincide largely with the introduction of AHCI, but if that is actually the cause or just a coincidence is up for debate. UEFI has largely solved that though, as it uses chips that are much more immune to abuse. Usually the companies will fix this kind of thing free of charge as long as its not too far beyond the average lifespan of the computer, as there is absolutely nothing you can do to prevent it.

seems to be an hp speciality - I just fixed a 22xi hdmi monitor that was failing after a few minutes with power, but it didn't have a fancy shmancy header, had to remove the winbond flash memory, read it whilst cold and then programme a replacement. Weird commonality of failing flash chips on two different LED panels.

yay taking Inspiration from Louis? ;) Good troubleshooting , I would've never guess the bios fault and probally would mess with the lvds and seperate signal from some "universal" lcd control board. And idk if that hickups on enable are not caused by constant enable pin uptime maybe its some more sophisticated signal driven ?

They(Nvidia) don't want systems interchangeable with AMD parts so that systems board manufacturers have to pick a GPU before engineering. It's to polarize the market coupled with the now defunct GPP which was to force all manufactures to label only nvidia equipped systems with gaming branding.

I am willing to bet whoever owned this originally tried to “fix” the backlight problem by installing a couple random BIOS images before giving up, never realizing that the BIOS was fine and it was really a hardware issue. With no way to see what it was doing they likely tried various images, ending on one that really made the system non-bootable.

Very unlikely that the backlight board had a fault initially, in addition to the BIOS fault. I bet the fault had been caused during the repair attempt. I'd start by making sure that the motherboard is doing its job there properly, sending the enable signal, and that the backlight board has power.
