The original Maplins stores in the UK were awesome as well, before they started reselling cheap Chinese tat. Their catalogues were incredible, listed all specs for components.

The fact that 'stuff' gets put together in China is not a barrier to a good product if the design in right. High quality separate systems are very much alive and available - albeit at a price! Anyway no matter where it's assembled the parts will almost certainly be at least 80% Chinese manufactured!

With vinyl making a comeback, it seemed to have brought out higher prices for vintage stereo equipment as well to look and sound the part. A few years back I was buying pallets of old gear cheap and just slowing going through refurbishing it.

Dexxter mate wouldn't surprise me. I know when I was buying the stuff a guy from windsor also bought a lot of stuff. Any pile that had NAD or technics went for 3-4 times any other pile! Even if it has only one unit of it.

Around 1980, there was a Canadian TV show, "Live It Up", which included product testing in which several brands were tested and compared to find which was most cost-effective. Tandy's batteries died more quickly than the major brands, but the battery club made them so inexpensive to replace that Tandy batteries won that comparison. As I recall, the test platform was the mechanical toy monkey banging cymbals together.

I've still got a NAD 3020 in the loft, which I inherited from my dad, once he passed away. I have fond memories of listening to records amplified by the NAD, via a pair of Mordaunt Short MS400 speakers, with the EMI 12"X 8" elliptical bass driver. Oh how things have changed.

I'm guessing that since Coseley was mid way between Dudley and Wolverhampton, then that may have served both, again, only surmising.

Tandy never sold any Velleman kits, that would have been Maplin. The two companies were not related in any way.

Thanks for the info, I was so sure I saw Velleman kits at Tandy but it was a long time ago, Also, someone told me that Maplins bought the old stock and stores when Tandy went, perhaps it was a common myth? Perhaps Maplins just happened to move into a few of your old shops? (as was the case with my local shop)

@@sofa-lofa4241 The stores were sold to Carphone Warehouse and were either converted to Carphone Warehouse or Tecno (now all gone). Some were closed and it is possible that when Maplin expanded that they moved into former Tandy locations.

I have a Grundig cabinet stereo system from the 60s. It's still going strong and my go-to for listening to my vinyls. Also the radio reception is impressive.

Grundig Fine Arts (the pre 1993 ones, not the phillips rubbish) Still works, still beats most sub 1000$ Dollar Systems.

Same here... that mini junk is a complete POS, I would understand if it had specs... but not only it's going down in size, but even more so in specs... 10% THD... give me a break. In mid-late 90s it just started to go down both in size and quality and that's where quality hifi died... todays prices for quality are laughable, you have to sell your kidney and some to afford it. Ebay is my hifi store. Anything past 90s can go in the garbage bin where it belongs to, no matter what quality it is, because I'm sure price is completely unacceptable. Kenwood, Pioneer, Denon, Onkyo, Technics, JVC all had to join-merge with each other to keep themselves afloat.
