I love the style of these old meter designs, personally. The Brymen 85x and Fluke 87 series come to mind. If only they could make meters in this style with the modern amenities - AA battery compartment, fuse access, etc. The plain rectangular chassis just looks nice and professional to me.

Duracell and its patented "Duraleak" technology😂. While I don't use Duracell alkaleaks anymore, I still don't leave them inside my DMM, but wrapped inside a plastic bag in case it leaks. Anyway, great work David.

I bought several of these ~25 years ago. great meters about $180, Fluke did not have anything comparable at ANY price at the time. Tek stopped selling them. Who else has AC+DC rms, and AC? My guess the same people were involved with both Tek916 and Brymen. Brymen has similar functions, similar low price. The probe jack screws were tight when new, with use and cold flow creep the PCB material gave way. Today days these are soldered.

given its age and while i was in there i'd probably have just given all the contact points and banana holes a squirt with some contact cleaner/deoxit just to get it nice and fresh - fun to see the old meters still tanking along though! my cheap one failed dead short after 6 months!

I bought two of these off eBay a couple years ago, and probably paid way too much for them, just because I love the auto-hold feature so much. I wish that more DMMs offered auto-hold, rather than the normal hold feature where you have to press a button to get it to hold the value, because I never have a hand free to do that when I need it.
@jonfreeman9682
@jonfreeman9682 8 ай бұрын
Most meters over $50 have that feature. It's pretty common.
@jsdutky
@jsdutky 8 ай бұрын
@@jonfreeman9682 I've seen lots of meters with a hold function that just locks the current reading on the screen when you press the hold button, but very few that have "auto hold" mode that does not require you to press the button while also making the measurement. Admittedly, I have mostly been looking at lower priced meters. I know, for instance, that both Fluke and Brymen meters have this feature.
@jonfreeman9682
@jonfreeman9682 8 ай бұрын
@@jsdutky The el cheapo meters include a manual hold but you're right it's not practical without a third hand to push the button though you could reach a finger over. Meters over $50 usually have auto hold feature but frankly it's silly not to include it even in cheap meters because it doesn't cost more to manufacture. There's no extra component cost between auto hold and manual hold. It's just software instruction in the chip that says if the value holds steady for 2 seconds then lock in that value on-screen.

Nice, easy and worthwhile moldymeder repair! I'm curious as to _why_ the common and volts/ohms/yada jacks are attached with screws and lock washers whereas the current jacks are soldered. Simply for robustness and ease of maintenance?
@EEVblog
@EEVblog 8 ай бұрын
The current jacks are sensing jacks, so two connections.
@atkelar
@atkelar 8 ай бұрын
I am not sure myself, but from looking at the board, I can see two traces comming off from the current jacks. They might have "input detection" wired to them, which needs two pins per jack, whereas the regular ones are just 1-pin options. And from dim memory, a screwed connection is mechanically more rugged than a solder joint, which would fit good to the most commonly used jacks. Irony in that exactly this was the point of failure of course.
@petersage5157
@petersage5157 8 ай бұрын
@@atkelar I just went down a bit of a rabbit hole looking at thread lockers. It's a shame the conductive ones aren't more readily available; they would completely obviate the need for this kind of repair.

As a beginner and for sake of curiosity, has this kind of device a built-in reverse polarity protection (against wrongly inserted batteries) ? I just got fooled by these weird chinese aaa batteries that came with my new Uni-T UT60BT and managed to install at least one the wrong way.... On the first power on, no display, no sound. After reinserting correcting the batteries, the unit worked flawlessy (but I didn't test any current). So if multimeters can measure reversed polarities, are they immune to reverse polarity with their own batteries ? Thanks!

You still have options for 2xNi-Mh + 1xNi-Zn, 3xLi-ion DC-DC, 1xNi-Mh 1xdummy 1xLFP or similar cells combinations to try. Maybe 1xLi-ion would work (requires battery compartment modification, probably half of capacity will be usable). Neitger Ni-Zn nor Li-ion with DC-DC converter don't have a LSD variant (low self discharge, Ni-Zn chemistry does have significant self-discharge, DC-DC converter does always waste power in outher case) so that is an disadvantage. Li-ion DC-DC or Li-ion with DC-DC are better known under "AA Li-ion 1.5V" or "AAA Li-ion 1.5V" names

It's about the time for multimeters to have LCR function, that is, internal signal generator and logging, which is not really difficult to make. Yet those expensive ones don't have it, while it is supposed to be a MULTIMETER. Along with high-resolution full color LCD and USB charging.
