I owe Michael Bay an apology. At least Michael Bay had the decency to say "I make movies for teenage boys" and I legitimately liked Bad Boys 2, The Rock, The first Transformers, and Pain and Gain. Snyder is a friggin hack and hasn't made a good movie since Watchmen.

@@vitorschein8073I think Mauler said it's his favorite of Snyder. But he hasn't seen it in a while. I really like it, there are some Snyder tisms that kind of bring the movie down(the long and unnecessary sex scene, the nipples in Ozymandias's suit and Manhattan's schlong bouncing all the time) but there are some things really good that came from the movie. The relationship between Rorschach and Nite Owl is really cool. Nite Owl has more chemistry with Rorschach than with Silk Spectre lmao. His reaction to Rorschach dying is phenomenal and way better than him just banging Laurie because of the grief over Ozymandias's plan IMO.

I love how at the beginning of the movie, Kora says she was told love was weakness, and had it beaten out of her. Then the flashbacks tell us that she was encouraged to have a lover, to give her something to fight for. I come to Snyder movies for the consistency.

HISTORY LESSON Back in 2013, while the Hunger Games hype was in full swing, Hasbro tried to cash in on Katniss' popularity by releasing a new line on NERF blasters aimed towards girls. This blaster line, named "Rebelle", featured more feminine designs and a white, pink, and purple color palette. The line was discontinued in 2018, I don't need to tell you why. I had almost forgotten about this golden moment in human history until the cast of EFAP decided to remind me of it with their incredibly appropriate pronunciation of this film. Thank you, EFAP. I'm not one to complain about gratuitous violence and sex. But there comes a point where I just don't care. Because its buried under bloat and is clearly there to trick you into watching the movie again. At least the previous Snyder movies had an appreciation for the physical form. Batman and Superman are beefcakes. Wonder Woman is shot like a model in an advertisement. The Snyder Cut is full of Amazon babes flexing their arms and midriffs and every single superhero except Flash is either breaking through or throwing other people through walls. In 300, Eva Greene and Gerard Butler are shot like ideals of feminine and masculine. In this movie, every single character is dull. The shirtless men are weak cowards despite their muscles. The women look fuck ugly with garbage "edge-lord" make up and hair. There's a magical gryphon. And even that is painted matte black in colour. So it looks like a crow. Fuck this movie.

The scale of the Imperium was such a problem for this, thank you for pointing it out. In Seven Samurai, the Samurai are against 30 Bandits - they're outnumbered, but they reckon there's a fair chance of defeating them if they play it right. But when the Imperium is so huge, Kora easily recruiting so many people willing to do this is just kinda unbelievable. 1:13:42 I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but Monty Python kind of successfully did this in comedy with the Romans in Life of Brian. They are definitely evil and there are resistance groups plotting against them, but the scene where John Cleese asks what the Romans ever did for them and then everyone begins to list all the technological and societal benefits that the Romans did bring… one of my favorite scenes, but a “realistic” portrayal of a ruthless empire that also is benefiting everyone in tangible ways.

I made a post on social media on Rebel Moon asking about the harvest god worldbuilding and I came across my first Snyder fanboy. I quoted the worldbuilding that Sindri gives, “We all know that it’s the thrusting of hips and the loud sounds of pleasure that summon the seedlings to sprout.” Which screamed to me that Zack is a 12-year-old but also it’s weird that this community of farmers is so small because wouldn’t they be having sex all the time to make sure the seedlings sprout? Also why is there no children in this community? And the fanboy responds, “I don’t know maybe read a book? The most common activity during old pagan fertility festival like bealtaine is precisely the encouragement of sex. Maybe because zack Snyder has read joseph cambell and james frazer and you have not.” Which still doesn’t answer my question of why is the community so small if part of the cultural beliefs is that is that sex encourages growth. Also why does referencing a book make it good?

@MistbornTaylor Because these Snyder bros aren’t really that bright. They proselytize about how great Zack’s work is, saying we don’t “get it” when in truth we probably understand it better than they do. Because if I maybe bold, a lot of us here actually pay attention to what a movie is telling us because at the end of the day we value consistency for the sake of verisimilitude. When you miss key details like you’ve mentioned; what it tells me is the writer didn’t work hard enough to justify a lot of their choices. Now if these folks want to like this stuff, regardless of the problems, go right ahead. I’m not one to rain on their parades. BUT the moment anyone tries to designate something like this as “good” as in quality I’m going to not stay silent. Not when we have pieces of fantasy and sci-fi media, Lord of the Rings, Arcane and Last Airbender who actually did a lot of legwork to justify their choices and in turn can be appreciated by those individuals who want to evaluate the nuts and bolts of a work; the “craft” as opposed to superficial stuff.
@MistbornTaylor

@@Avarn388Exactly. Even if this idea was referenced from something (and judging by the other responses I got, it's not) it doesn't make sense in THIS context. Alright calling it now, Khora is the assassin who killed the King and Queen, setup by those who wanted to seize power. She carried out her mission, but couldn't kill the princess though, so absconded with the child to this farm planet. The bad men have made Khora public enemy #1 because they need her to find the princess and finish off the bloodline. That girl who was about to be raped was actually the princess, which is why the robot was reminded of her. Also it's why the robot was able to shoot the bad man, since it could only use weapons to protect the royal bloodline. The soldier boy is the romantic interest of the princess, and will probably play a bigger role in the 2nd film, and the robot of course will be the princess's bodyguard/protector as she is the last of the bloodline. Why do I think this? Because Zack Snyder lacks any imagination at all, and 90% of this film is just stolen bits of other movies, especially Battle beyond the stars which the first half of the film is almost a 1 to 1 rip. There are also bits of Star Wars, Free Willie, Independence Day, Crouching Tiger Hidden dragon, hentai tentacle porn, Gladiator, Dungeons and Dragons, just to name a few. It's as if Zack took segments of scenes he liked in various movies and fed them into an AI script generator, and filmed what came out the other side.

Right, it makes sense on a small scale. Magnificent Seven also had that plot point involving Mexican Bandits stealing the harvest. You can imagine a band of a couple hundred, at most, being reliant on stealing grain from one village, but not a galactic empire. Snyder steals plot points from movies and doesn't understand the plot point. He's just hoping you'll recognize "This is a reference!" and then make it make sense in your own head. You could make a great movie out of the premise "Science Fiction: futuristic Seven Samurai," but you have to actually ADAPT it. Just having the idea doesn't do any of the work.

Why is an entire empire relying on the grain output of a single small farming village? Because Zack is just copy-pasting from Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven, where the bandits are attacking a small farming village for their food, and he doesn't "adapt" the idea to make it fit. This is the height of pulling in elements you don't really understand and just hoping the reference to the other thing is enough to convey the concept. It makes sense for bandits, who don't have any resources other than their willingness to be violent, to be reliant upon the food they can steal from a single location, but not a galactic evil empire. Zack doesn't grasp the things he's stealing from, he's just hoping you'll be pleased by the reference. It's why they never seemingly explain that they're getting together a crack team-Zack is already immersed in his Seven Samurai plot, so he doesn't explain because he wants you to recognize it. But he fails to realize it makes no sense in the context of HIS story. Just wanting to do a Seven Samurai plot in a fantasy or sci-fi setting isn't wrong. I'd watch the hell out of that concept. But this is just superficially that concept, it doesn't actually establish a creative groundwork. You need a scenario in which a small number of highly skilled specialists can swing the outcome. You need them all to have a motivation for joining. It's also nice to give them relationships to each other so you can play off the group dynamic. Seven Samurai isn't good BECAUSE it's a small team assembled to defend a village, it's good because it has clear stakes and objectives, and because the characters go on interesting journeys through the story.

I can’t really fault him for Miller because the dude is very clearly a sociopath so he must have been good at hiding his true self from people. I have no love for Snyder as a filmmaker, but I don’t think it’s fair to attribute his repeated use of that trope to anything occurring in his real life. The guy just likes making super edgy movies and he feels that showing children being abused is a good way to highlight how dark things are in the universes his films take place in. Of course, when you repeatedly make use of a trope it begins to lose any of its meaning and almost comes off as parody at a certain point.

First they announced a Zack Snyder "starwarsish" movie. Then they said it's gonna be a two parter. Then they said the first part already has a "director's cut". I'd say someone should buy a pair of scissors and gift it to Zack Snyder, 'cause he obviously doesn't know how to trim down his movies... but I guess at this point someone should get him a paper shredder so he knows what to do with the useless scenes he wrote.

It will never cease to amaze me how many movies Zack Snyder still gets to make despite almost all of them getting bad reception. For some reason, corporate executives still see him as some misunderstood artistic genius when in reality he's a mentally 13-year-old hack who can't write at a beginner's level, let alone at a level worth hundreds of millions in production costs.

And the crazy thing is that none of them have performed up to expectations. Michael Bay has a handful of movies that made over a billion dollars. Snyder has not accomplished that except as a producer credit on Aquaman

@@colten53 I think up until Transformers 5, the only Michael Bay film to have ever lost money was The Island (which is pretty good btw). Ive softened a lot on Michael Bay. As much as I hated Transformers 2-4 (never watched 5) I'll take those bad movies over the bad movies we get these days. The most Mike pushed a message was the creepy "Romeo and Juliet" laws scene in Transformers 4. I really hope that shit wasn't some sort of self-report.

Zack Snyder should just be directing commercials and music videos. He'd be fine at that. I don't understand why studios keep giving him films, though.

1:26:13 This is exactly my argumemt against people who critique Sweden and Denmark for their passivity/surrender during WW2- Denmark "surrendered in 6 hours" Yea, not so much surrendering as just realizing facts. The first infantry wave alone was almost _half amillion_ soldiers. Denmarks entire population at the time was like 3 million people, including every single man, woman and child. Just what exactly, would you expect them to do? It wasnt "surendering", it was "not being a suicidal moron"

Before I watch this EFAP, this is my take on the movie. The camera was weirdly in and out of focus. It wasn't too hard to look at, but it was distracting to notice that everything that wasn't in the center always shifted out of focus. The effects were really weird too, since many of the lights, lasers, and such things all completely overtook every scene. This one scene early on when Kora and Oldman were talking, the fire was SO bright, it was the most distracting thing I've ever seen because I'm trying to take in the surroundings, but the fire is SO bright, and the glare effects from it stretch across the scene. The glare as well stretched off the fire and lazers and OVER people's faces, and that was also distracting, especially in the slow-motion scenes that highlighted nothing cool. The slow-motion only slowed down lazers and people's faces, and none of that is cool enough on its own to warrant hyper-fixation on it. Visuals aside, the story was a complete nonsense mish-mash of unexplained names, places, and entities colliding over some drama about kingdom succession and tyranny. All of this unexplained nonsense is then fed through the lens of uncharacterized stereotypes. The "general" does nothing general-like, the saber lady was there to slash at things, some rebel guy sacrificed his life so... something could happen, and nobody cared, including myself. Some super cool badass dude rode a hippogriff, and I accurately called that the PROPER thing to do would be incorporating this skill into a later scene, but it wouldn't happen - I was correct. The people handed one of our protagonists a gun so he could execute his friends himself, and to the surprise of nobody, he used that gun to free everyone and save the day, all the while I screamed at the screen. I thought about the movie after it finished, and came to the conclusion that I know nothing about this world or its inhabitants, learned nothing about myself or my own world, watched a bunch of contradictory scenes with nothing-characters, and only FELT like giving it higher than a 3 because it looked nice at times. Edit: Oh, and I thought Kora was potentially a Mary Sue. She had training we don't see that allows her to win basically all combat scenarios, but she's skinny, she's liked by basically everyone, she never struggles or wrestles with anything, all her enemies get stupider when attempting to kill her, and she's super amiable.

I reminded of The Great Hunt (Wheel of Time Book 2) and a character named Geofram Bornhald. he's is the commander of a legion of the Children of Light, a religious-military group that are basically witch hunters. He's dispatched to an area known as Almoth Plain that has no centralized governemnt. It's jsut independant farming villages. He's there to root out evil and restore order. To make Almoth Plain into a nation for his order to rule in addition to their puppet kingdom of Amador. He isn't there to brutalize the people. He's there to bring them in line. As he heads into one village, he hopes that no young man will do something foolish to impress his girl becuase then Bornhald would have to make an example out of him. He doesn't want to kill an idiot showing off, but he will to impose order. His soldiers are disciplined. There not there to rape and pillage. And yet, everything he's doing is evil. This is an example of an empire conquring people and subjgating them with the intention of ruling over them and adding them to the fold. This book was written by a man who studied history and witnessed war. The Children of the Light have all the best intentions and even some merit to them, but their methodology and narrow world view lead them to great evil. The empitome of the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
