It looks very cool when high voltage is soo close but yet soo far from where it wants to go. I think capacitance was a huge factor in this one. It almost looks more like 50kV instead of 35kV.
Voltage from transformer was 0-35kV
Ballasted to around 3kW
DANGER: HIGH VOLTAGE, DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF!!

@Variac Maniac -- You essentially created a HV capacitor made out of glass. Really cool experiments and look forward to more of your content.

Very beautiful and a perfect demonstration, that there is no substance that is a perfect conductor or a perfect insulator, when I took an electronics class at a technical school after high school and we studied ohms law and what not many students, myself somewhat as well, had a hard time grasping this concept or didn't necessarily believe the instructor. But it makes sense, because if you purchase electrical rated gloves and other PPE they have specific voltage ratings such as 1kv, 5 kv, 10 kv and so on. So an insulator, is basically a conductor with such a high resistance that, for all purposes in everyday life, does not conduct electricity and keeps us from getting shocked and preventing short circuits.

This was interesting espically the large glass one because of the shape of the conductor (the metal below the glass) the lighting or the plasma of electricity was arcing beautifully *THANKYOU FOR THE VIDEO* Note: But being honest I was bit scared about your safety but at the end when you show up in front of a camera I was glad XD

You're welcome! Glad to hear! The thing I always keep in mind is the circumstances: voltage, possible capacitance, distance, emergency planning, etc.

The random coronas on the glass were like the potential was tunneling or something like that. I've no idea but it was class all the same.

I've been trying to find a pole mounted 15kVA transformer my entire life.. Capacitors too. Linemen are not very easy people to get to hand those things Where did you get yours? Cool content subbed

I got mine from the manufacturer (Solomon Transformer corp.) This one costed roughly $600 and had it shipped to fedex depo where i picked it up as it is too expensive for home delivery.

@@flaplaya 5KVA 14.4kV primary, 120/240v secondary. It weighs 300lbs. Power companies will not let people obtain such a device as it's a liability issue. Most transformer companies won't either for the same reason. Best option is eBay as you don't have to request a quote, make 2 scheduling phone calls, and to schedule a delivery date, etc.

@@VariacManiac Gotcha.. I've looked on Chinese websites too but as you've noted the Shipping costs.. Very nicely done and I appreciate the replies.. Thing is a beast.. Oh and I'm calculating you are overdriving the "secondary" which is now your primary by like 300%? And it is obviously ballasted? Sure you have a video on the configuration... I'll be looking for it. Great work, be careful play safe one hand rule and chicken sticks always.

@@flaplaya It was ran at roughly double its rated voltage in the video. I don't do it anymore as I don't want to destroy the dielectric strength of the transformer. In order to accomplish higher voltages, I use an x-ray transformer. I might be uploading in the future, depending on circumstances.

Safety not first. I like what you do but you don't think you already set written down in stone the cause of your death? No safety and disorganization will lead you to accidentally forget one of these switches powered on and then... you know. Safety first!

Wow.... That fucking insulator at the start of the video. Only a small one i see. ha ha. Wait, so for the 35kV you where just ballasting you big boys tranny and sticking too much power into it? lol, thats naughty if thats what you where doing as your gonna be very close to breaking down the secondary insulation. Typically they are only designed to withstand double their rated voltage before... FLASHOVER! Ya wouldn't want that if your really unlucky it would end with a massive explosion and major transformer fire. That was a great video, dude. ;)
