Shoveling a driveway in less than 4min 30 seconds (not rushing at all) using efficient clearing technique. - How to remove snow/how to shovel snow
full guide - ssprod.me/blog/2022/01/04/how...
15-20cms (6-8 inches) of fresh snow had fallen. Ottawa, Ontario, Canada where I live, has over 2.3m (86in) of snow on average each year. It's a mix of powder, really wet stuff, freezing rain or layers of snow and rain. This video was shot on the less wet type snow, not quite full powder but technique is similar regardless. I have been shovelling for over 20 years and 90+% of the time the snowblower just sits in the garage because it is slower.
Shovelling inspired T-shirt? --- www.zazzle.ca/collections/sho...
Full info and details here ssprod.me/blog/2022/01/04/how...
Start by clearing a walkway length-wise half-way through your driveway. Using this walkway, push the snow with the shovel towards the side, ideally without taking any steps towards it. If you have a double width driveway, push as far as you can without moving. Once you are done one side, go down the walkway pushing the other side. If you have a double width driveway, repeat again until you have pushed all the snow to the edges. Now lift the snow you pushed on top of the existing snowbank (use your legs) and you're done!
Note that for heavy/wet snow, it can be harder to push and you may need to lift and throw it on the snowbank (or walk through the remaining snow to drop it on the snowbank if throwing is too hard). Once the big accumulation is done you can push the rest or as far as you can. It may seem like it does not help with heavy snow but the worst-case is you shovel like you used to so nothing lost...
Other tips from the comments:
- Yes, if you have a snowblower or a tractor etc it is "easier", that's not the point. Most of the time, it is slower, many people don't have them and using a snowblower all the time is lazy. Don't get me wrong, if you have super heavy stuff you'll probably want to use those things if you have them at your disposal but it should be the exception rather than the rule.
- Remove tire tracks so they don't ice up and cause problems all season
- Lift with your legs, not with your back
- Don't wait too long to clear the driveway, if it starts to melt or solidify you will be swearing.
- Wet snow is clearly heavier, take your time, there is no rush
- If you have a snowblower, shovelling like this will still be faster most times except for very wet snow or when there is a very high amount. A second option is to push everything to the sides with a shovel and use the snowblower to just throw the piles you made over to the snowbank.
- Apparently this is a good AMSR snow shovelling video, if that's what you're into, glad it helps!

For sure less effective with wet snow but it is better than shovelling it bit-by-bit. Just did mine today after snow & rain, push as far as you can, throw it on the snowbank, then push again. At the worst case, this technique means you shove bit-by-bit which you would have to do anyways...

@@hernandayolearyallda I have a similar situation where one side has a much smaller area for a snowbank. What I do is just start more towards one side and push it towards the side that has more room, so in your case start at the rightmost side, then push it all towards the left (it will require 2 pushes or more). I basically move up the driveway for the 1st push and then down the driveway for the 2nd push. You could also do both pushes one after the other but I find thats a lot more back and forth.

for anyone saying not for wet snow all you do with deep deep snow is you keep to a load that is under 15 to 20 pounds and you just keep going . Saw a young guy go for the bottome , and i showed the young man you gotta start from the top work your way down if you feel any strain you drop the load pick less of it up until you feel the weight is correct for your exact strength for that day. Every day your body is different , and a different position has to be tried to give other muscles rest as you put in the potential long hours of shoveling.

Hahaha totally understand the training video analogy. Its also different when you go do something for the first time and whoever is doing the video did it many many times and can make small adjustments on the fly you wouldn't know/see. For sure this needs to be adapted to the snow conditions/depth and your own environment. This is just one "version" of the method I guess but it works (with tweaks) in most situations.

@@SunshineproductionsCanada There's no way you beat most people with snow blowers. I have a 2 stage blower that I use for wet snow and I clear the entire 2 car driveway in about 2 minutes. Before this I manually shovelled every year, and I consider myself quick. In fact, that dusty snow usually is quicker than what you're doing. The entire thing including plowed in snow in about 3 mins, but when the wet snow mixed with rain comes in and semi freezes, you're left with snow that weighs A LOT, and you can't just push it to one side. It sticks to the shovel and you have to lift it up and throw it. Good luck going fast like that. Take over 10 mins manually. By the way, when the plow comes in and plows us in, we literally have 1ft of COMPACTED snow to clear out. That itself takes like 15-20 minutes alone manually because you have to take breaks. Lifting thousands of lbs of snow in a short period is not as easy as you describe.

Charles, I'm from the snow belt between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. I tip my hat to our American friends from Buffalo who also dealt with the Blizzard of 1977. Nothing wrong with your shovelling technique, but if you had to clear your driveway following a major snow event they could time you with a sun dial.John Turner

Ottawa gets about the same amount of annual snowfall then Buffalo... And the technique works as well as any even though it may not be as effective in a massive snowfall. But then again, what technique is faster for that kind of snow? You are correct in sun dial measurement, the highest accuracy one has a resolution of 10 seconds so it would be adequate to time snow clearing of any kind.

i have always used that method when hand shoveling. dry, cold snow as in this video is easy as long as no one has driven or walked on it 1st. wet snow or frozen slush under the new snow will not go that well at all, yet the technique is the same.

Not bad. This is indeed an efficient way to clear a driveway. But if you turned right instead of left after clearing the middle, you could step further in towards the side of the driveway and clear each side in one pass instead of two, since you would be stepping into the already-cleared part of the driveway that no longer has snow on it and the stroke would be longer. :)
@SunshineproductionsCanada
@SunshineproductionsCanada 5 жыл бұрын
I think the issue happens when the snowbank is higer (or driveway wider) you can't quite do it in one go. You have to push a 2nd time or lift quite a bit higher and so be positionned much closer to the snowbank. End of the year the snowbanks can be almost 2m (6feet) tall.
@bradcharlton9362
@bradcharlton9362 4 жыл бұрын
@@SunshineproductionsCanada Your push stroke can still reach the snowbank if you go left-to-right (rather than right-to-left) after the pass up the middle. Much of the snow will impact the snowbank and will usually stay there. What falls back down can be cleared with one quick path down each side of the driveway, with a quick lift when necessary, if the shovel become full. Besides, any tiny bit of snow that might be missed will melt when the daylight beams down on the dark-coloured driveway - even if it is NOT sunny during the day. :) On many driveways, I don't even go up the middle first. Just side-to-side, and then a quick run and back for what didn't clear the bank.

Not exactly baby conditions, pretty typical to have 10+ cm on the ground like this. 3hours is quite a lot. The most ive spent was probably 1hr on a double driveway in 50 ish cm of snow although it wasn't super wet.

I will be sure to take my garden hose to it next time just to please you. Oh, and it'll still take me less than 3 hours...
