Effortless Golf Swing Feelings
In this tip, I'm working with Kevin, a 66 year old 15 handicap golfer. He had a 2 hour lesson with me in February 2018 at Bear's Best Golf Club Las Vegas.
We started the lesson with irons working on some swing positions to help build an effortless swing. After I felt Kevin had the positions, and was hitting some great shots, we moved up to driver.
As we started, Kevin's first drive registered 167 carry distance and an 80 mph clubhead speed on a Swing Caddie SC200 portable launch monitor (see my review below). To get him more power, I gave him some new thoughts to get the effortless feeling in his arms.
As he applied these feelings, we started to see his carry distance dramatically increase as well as his clubhead speed.
As you watch this tip, take note of what I wanted Kevin to feel as he swung the driver. The next time you have a chance to make some swings recognize these very same feelings and start applying them to your swing. If you do, you too will start to hit the ball longer than ever, just like Kevin.

Paul, This is the first video of yours I looked at. I never forgot it. I still try to maintain this method. I am hitting better but continue to go back to my trying to kill it swing. Back and forth I go. I am 78 YOA . This method has me hitting further than ever. I will save this video for ever. Thanks Paul. Phil Matton Palm Bay FL

Interestingly enough, his smash factor is actually low, when he starts making better contact those will be 225-230 carry. Great job Paul and thanks Kevin for allowing Paul to film, it helps to see someone who is learning the swing.

Probably your best explanation of how the body works and arms remain passive. I know you've said these words many times and in many different ways but somehow hearing it again on camera with a student just brought home the whole concept you've been teaching.

Hi Paul I love this video of letting the golf club stretch my arms out. I’ve been working on your body swing for a good while now and I watched this video last week and I had a lightbulb moment of what I needed to do as I was duck hooking for golf ball. Now I’m hitting the ball nice and straight and absolutely killing it for distance with a feeling of nothing. I keep practicing everyday swinging my golf club in the air without a ball as you say (the ball is the problem). It feels great and there is no pain afterwards even after 18 holes of golf. Brilliant videos Paul, keep them coming 👍

Very good. As people work on it they will get it because they moves I am talking about are the moves necessary to get there. At first, people are not good at it and they will want to revert back to what they have always done. This is new and different so it takes understanding and work. As you see, it is amazing once you get it. Keep at it.

Amazing to see the smile on this guys face. He's so happy. Feeling like the arms are doing nothing is so key!! In the golf swing, the arms are a whip, not a hammer. It is so important to keep them flexible, loose, and tensionless so that you can SNAP the ball into orbit.

This changed my game so much. I lost a ton of distance on all my clubs and then it hit me. I realized that if I wanted to truly swing freely, I needed to be further away from the ball. I was too close all the time, which resulted in loss of distance and a nasty nasty slice. This video cured those instantly! Can't thank you enough sir!!!

I stumbled across this video today. Ok, i was sceptical. I had recently gotten some work done on my swing with my trainer and got much more consistency in my strikes. I'm a 34 hcp, playing for 3 years. 32 yo. I hit my 3 hybrid about 80 mph, around 160 - 180 meters with roll. I tried this on the range today. Swing went up to 94 mph and about 210 meters with roll. I have never seen my balls fly like this. Thanks!!

Hi Paul I recently started taking up Golf as a hobby and very quickly subscribed to your channel and I must say you talk alot of sence and I keep practicing your effortless swing withy driver and irons mainly 4 and 5, and just yesterday I hit a shot with my 5 Iron about 185 yards with 15 carry, I know it's not amazing but it's been my best hit so far, I did find I did exactly what you said in your video and went back to using my arms like a clown, I hit about a hundred balls and I'd say I got about 20 or so decent shots and that one that was so much better than the rest. Please keep posting videos.

I've been watching Paul's videos and recently tried out the principals he teaches. In particular the practice swing gripping right down on the club leaving about four or five inches of shaft which you can see at the beginning and end of each swing, confirming your arms/wrists are crossing over. I have been playing for about 18 months, am 66 years old and play off 26.5 handicap. My drives have always been short, only about 160 - 175 yards. After practice with the loose wrist and 'whip' arm crossover, my drives are now 200 yards plus. I suspect that this distance will increase and therefore help reduce my handicap with more practice´with this style. Great job Paul. Many thanks from Pete in the UK.

Stumbled on your site. Really good job. I quit golf years ago because I couldn't carry a drive more than 165 yards. It just wasn't fun always having a long iron or wood into a par four /par five green. Thousands into lessons. ( eliminated my slice and improved my short game but no dice on adding distance). Years ago I was a baseball coach and one thing I learned was I couldn't teach someone to throw a ball faster than a certain point - his natural ability. If you could teach speed, all pitchers could throw a 103 fastball. IMO, the same is true for driving a golf ball. People have a natural limit and mine was a 165 carry. Good luck to you with you teaching. You seem like a great guy.
@paulwilsongolf

Thanks. If you are only hitting it that far you are using physical strength to hit the ball. So yes, you are right in one sense that you will not get stronger as you get older. I have seen this countless times in people who come to me for lessons. So to get more distance you need to turn the arms off and use your body. Anyone can do this. The gentleman in the video was in the exact scenario that you are so it can be done. Just need to swing looser not harder. Give it a try and you will see.

I stained my muscle under my left shoulder blade by swinging hard at a ball last week. It has been 10 years since I played golf due to 3 right knee replacements on right knee and over 60 back procedures on my 9 bulging disc in my back. My right knee won't straighten any more so it stays flexed. I get 90 to 94 swing speed but it is all arms with little lower body movement and I only get 195 carry distance. At 65 with physical issues, I need to try this method after my muscle heals. Thanks Paul, all of your videos are fantastic and I hope to visit you in March for a full day of lessons.

Thanks. Just stay focused on my tips. You can do it on your own. Keep seeing the body as the power source not the arms. I know it feels good to hit but there is a better way. Keep the arms relaxed and wrists loose. This will give you that effortless feeling. Think about throwing a punch. Do you do that with just your arm? No. Legs and hips just like the golf swing.

I've taken these "feelings" along with a tip pulled from a Gary Player golf clinic to pick up yards with every club. I played well before gaining a little yardage, but the closer to the green the better, right? Oh by the way, accuracy is improving too. Good stuff, Paul! 5 handicap here

Had a light bulb moment today after hitting 48 out I came back in 42 bearing in mind the back nine is tougher on my course and would have been lower if my putting was a little better, I could feel the club head from start to finish by using your thought process and still felt like I could have done another 18. Onwards and upwards, thank you

Paul Wilson Golf I always tell them picture thst you're swinging a bucket full of water on a rope and your rope is the shaft and bucket is the ckub head. You cant do that the way you death grip seing a golf club! Or better yet, picture two thick rope's as your arms oinned to your shoulders, tied together that bucket. How are you going to swing thst bucket bsvk and through? You have to use body rotation.

Hello Paul, I love watching your videos. You explain everything very well. You say when using driver you must not use your arms. Use your body. Is it the same technique for irons as well ? Please reply. Thank you. My driver is not consistent. It's a mixture of good and bad.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 4 жыл бұрын
Same golf swing. You use your body for all golf clubs, you only have 1 golf swing. For your driver, I would start by slowing down, getting the wrists looser then adding some body to hit shots. Thanks for watching!!

Hi! Paul! I have been watching a number of your videos on the "easy, effortless swing." When you are talking about adding more power once you have mastered the "effortless swing" how do you accomplish that without bring the arms and shoulders into. It sounds like you have to swing harder. Anyway, I was wondering if there was a website you have if I want to take a lesson from you/ coming to Las Vegas.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 6 жыл бұрын
You are going to fire the lower body harder for more power. You never hit harder. Harder you hit, the tighter your wrists, the slower the club swings, the more you manipulate the face. Powerless arms is you not hitting or helping the shot in any way with your arms. If you turn faster they will come down faster.

I get the loose arms and the stretching it out. What I don’t get is the supporting body movements that supply the power to generate 94mph club speed. Guess I need a Paul Wilson lesson.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 6 жыл бұрын
Pick up a weight on a string and twirl it. It is mass (club) swinging around an axis (body). So twirl it at a medium speed. If so, the weight moves to 90 degrees to your hand 100% of the time. It does the same circle because the string is only so long. So how do you get the weight to swing faster? You twirl your hand faster. You do nothing to the weight and the string. So see it like this the next time you go out and try it. Just different that's all.

Paul, I think people don't try this kind of loose wrist swing because when they watch pro's on TV they appear to have no "bounce" to the club as it transitions at the top. This makes it look like they have the club locked in a vise using their hands and wrists. Is that just an illusion that they are using either firm wrists or grip to not have any float loading at the top?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 6 жыл бұрын
They don't loosen due to human nature telling them to hit the ball and the satisfaction they get from hitting. Some are definitely tight and using their arms. Tough competition out there now. They feel they have to swing as hard as they can when really it is about hitting fairways.

Hi Paul, love your videos. Do you use loose wrists around the green for lob shots & bump and run shots?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Glad you like them. Chipping is like putting. I would not be using my wrists. Instead is it like my putting stroke. Then I change clubs to roll the ball different distances. Pitching is similar though. Loose wrists.

I don't at the moment. Just know it is mass swinging around and axis. Turn the axis (body) mass would always move towards 90 degrees to the axis 100% of the time. Simple physics. So do nothing to the mass (club) and turn the axis (body) first. This is how I get people perfectly on plane. So simple.

@paulwilsongolf

Too much weight on your back foot at impact. Do some practice swings. Feel the back heel come off the ground 3-4 inches with irons at impact. Get the feeling then apply it to your shots. Then you won't hit it fat.
