In this tip I show you the best golf drill you can be doing to loosen your arms which will give you that effortless golf swing. If you're someone who's tight, this drill is for you.
Pick Up Free Samples of The Body Swing here: bodyswing.com/freesamples/
If you're trying to build an effortless golf swing, you can't have your arms all locked up. They need to be loose. This is the best golf drill I've found that is sure to loosen you up. Yes, it's weird and different at first but if you keep doing it you'll finally get that effortless swing that'll hit the ball long and straight.
There are many reasons why people try to hit hard with their arms. They want to hit the ball hard, they're trying to keep the lead arm straight etc. Although an effortless golf swing doesn't feel powerful in your arms it'll hit the ball just as far, if not farther, than your hard, fast golf swing.
So if you are someone who's arms are all tight and locked up, this really is the best golf drill you can be doing to finally let go and stop trying to kill it. Give this drill about 10 mins to get used to this new looser feeling. Once you do, you will finally get this effortless feeling and you'll be playing pain free golf as well.

This is a great one. Need to keep doing it for at least 10 mins. I tell people this and what do they do ... they don't do it and go right back to whacking away at it. Mindboggling. This drill has helped tons of my students go from hitting it nowhere to way longer than they every have. Stick with it and you will get the same result.

I have seen some excellent teachers on you tube but you are the benchmark for instruction. Common sense ideas imparted in a simple way. Your swing looks ridiculously easy and you hit it a mile. That is why sam snead played better longer than anyone else. These are the best easiest concepts I've ever seen.

Hi Paul. As someone who learned golf as an adult, your tips and overall teaching approach has been a breath of fresh air for me. While I’m in my 20’s, I have always described myself as a tight/never loose player, which has made golf a very frustrating sport for me. Additionally, I was a baseball/tennis player, which has left the feeling of reacting & hitting a ball engrained in my athletic approach. I’m in the process of breaking my swing down to the basics, with the goal of permanently applying the approach of “stop trying to hit the ball”. I’ve recently fully committed to the tips in your videos, as it's now clear that most of my instructors have completely underestimated the tightness & heavy use of arms in my swing. With that said…..I'd like share my recent experience/struggles with this drill because I am definitely……one of the EXTREME cases you mentioned. I went out to the range this week and “Touched the Neck” for an entire bucket of balls. After about 10 balls, I had the loose feeling you described. I only focused on turning my body and having my belt facing left of the target when finished. I started with a wedge, and moved up to an 8 iron, as my confidence with this drill & loose feel was increasing. I could actually feel the weight of the club as I turned through, and could trust that the club would follow, all while keeping my arms “dead” (and the ball was going straight!). I left the range with so much excitement, as I finally had this feeling of separating my arms from my lower body. Then the next day came…….. The next day I went out to the range again (mistake #1), with the same excitement carried over from the day prior. I thought, “today I’m going to try and move up to driver & maybe even work on full swings.” After about 5 balls, I realized…..I had completely lost this feeling of not using my arms in the golf swing. It was insane how fast this feeling disappeared & how I couldn’t get it back (I couldn’t even get the feel back doing basic practice swings, as my arms were literally activating every time I turned through my swing). I sat at the range for 2 hours touching the neck with a simple wedge & could not turn my arms off no matter how hard I tried. It’s almost like my body was revolting against me for how many years I’ve been using all arms with no legs/hips. I was even letting go of the club at times, desperately trying to find this feeling again. It’s brutal because I know how groundbreaking this loose arms feeling is for my golf game…..but my last range session was so frustrating that I’m scared to get out there and look for it again. Any tips for getting out of a rut like this? (It’s almost like I don’t trust that loose feeling anymore). Is there something else I can focus on to try and get that loose feeling back? You’re the best. -Will

Glad you are starting to get it. We all have set backs. This is due to human nature. This seems to be a great addition to the regular hinging drills I am currently work on as a bodyswing- student. Will try this drill, cos I found myself tighten at times on top of the backswing, when wanting the 'widest arc' maybe too early and a little too much (after having great results re ball ctc with that)

Paul, I'm not the guy you're talking about but it might as well been me. In the 1.5years that I've been playing I have never even done a full backswing, I'm always doing like 70% backswing with 0 hinge. I just watched this tip and for the first time I'm doing a full swing and it feels amazing! This works amazingly, together with the other videos you've recommended the other day. Charl

Yeah, I call the short backswing a young players swing. I can hit great shots doing a short swing but it takes every ounce of energy I have. If I go closer to parallel I can swing at 80% which doesn't hurt my body. Stick with the longer swing. It should only take a couple of weeks to get used to it. Then you will never look back.

Hi Paul. I followed your advice and gave this approach a valid try. It was far more challenging than I first thought. After about 1/2 a bucket I realized my impulse to hit was very strong in the downswing, particularly from last parallel to the ball. Once I realized this and kept my wrists loose through impact WOW what an epiphany. I discovered that if I focused more on staying behind the ball with my head and less on locking up my arms and wrists to “crush” it, the ball rocketed with seemingly no effort. I still revert back to bad habits and tense up occasionally but simply rotating my hips more efficiently and maintaining loose wrists gets me center face contact and excellent ball flight. It was very windy today (in my face) so I didn’t concern myself with distance but rather staying loose and smooth. Game changer, thank you. I’ll continue to follow you and look forward to more content but as for me and my playing partners, they can figure it out themselves while I shoot lower scores by staying in the fairway. Thanks Paul, I’m off to a good start I think.

The ear to ear drill started it all for me. I just happened to have my launch monitor set up and I did the ear to ear drill forgetting the launch monitor was there. It read 93mph swing speed with my 6 iron. I usually max out at about 87-88. I thought it was a misread. Kept doing the drill and was consistently 90-94 the rest of my practice session. It seems counterintuitive to me but ball flight, center contact and increased distance tells the truth. Unbelievable. Can’t thank you enough!

Just tell yourself you are doing a drill. It is not reality. So if you are doing a drill who cares about the result. You are doing a drill to learn the move to then put that move into your real golf swing. Funny how everyone thinks they always have to hit great shots. There is "drill mode." This is where you don't watch or care about your shots. You care about the move you are working on.

Looser is better for sure. You are starting to see it. There is no way you would even want to go back to swinging hard now. Sounds like you are on track. Just be aware that you don't want floppy arms although it may feel like that at first. Powerless arms. Stay focused and try to make the positions perfect.

Thanks Paul. My club pro recently reiterated the need for me to have relax my arms for a looser, freer swing. I came to your site, found this and two other videos of yours, including the one on initiating the hip turn (another feedback point from a club pro). This weekend I played my club's championship, The Skagit Open. I watched and did this drill before each day's round and... won the Low Net Championship!! This included a hole-out eagle from 210 yards on the #1 handicap hole at our course. My swing is starting to really feel different, more syrupy. :-) I am a skinny unmuscular guy and according to my golf coach , I have a great practice swing, easy, loose and relaxed arms. Put a ball in from of me and that all changes, my arms suddenly lock up, with no extension, leading to an open face, a chicken wing and frustration on my part. I'm going try this next time I'm at the range to see if it helps. I bought Paul's Body Swing videos and they are great, they all make sense to me, it's just implementing the instructions especially concerning the arms. It's on me to conquer this because I didn't have this problem earlier as consistently as I do now. Anyway great videos Paul, Thank you.

A lot of people have great practice swings then you put the ball there and try to kill it. That is human nature. I did a tip on it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNt_fdunxJiWeJ8.html so you need to go against human nature. If you have The Body Swing then you know the follow through lessons. You need to think more of them that hitting the ball. Do this daily in practice swings until mastered. The follow through is point B. Go from A to B. Forget the ball. You can do it.

Just tell yourself to not touch your neck. Extend the lead arm without making it too stiff.

Well, you can come to the right place. I want your arms powerless in the down and through swing. As you are working on things in your backswing you may feel the arms as you are working on a position or movement. Once you train them to go back they would be doing that without you helping it. Then, of course, powerless in the down and through swing. ***START HERE*** Body Swing Concept: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e56pbM123r-XZZ8.html Grip: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLeKf9Npx6yRh6s.html Hinge Rehinge: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMCVh9SU35jUnXk.html Alginment: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jKyKlpOI1picYp8.html Secure Grip: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJ57ZqqU2dHeZ3U.html Best Drill: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbyYp69eyZemaY0.html Power the swing with the legs and hip not the hands and arms. Paul, I first found you on a KZfaq train while exercising on my stationary bike about 10 years ago. You were talking about the effortless golf swing (coiling/uncoiling like a clubhead cover, practice hitting the ball only 50% distance, relaxing the wrists and arms before the backswing etc). I tried it and it worked quite well, but then (as always with the golf swing!) I lacked consistency - - and so I looked at other golf instructional videos (as you know, there are plenty out there!). Not able to gain any consistency with other instructions either, I found myself regularly coming back to your videos. Then, viola!, I saw this video last week. I can't describe to you how much I now know what relaxed arms (and wrists) feel like - - and how the arms naturally extend from the weight of the club during the downswing and through impact. I always thought my hands and arms were relaxed - - but because I kept my left arm straight (as all the golf instructions call for!) I now realize my arms and wrists were far from truly relaxed. With my new "effortless" swing, I hit a drive yesterday - - into a 15 kt headwind - - that went 10 yards further than ever before on that hole. Thanks.

Well, learning from KZfaq videos is a great way to get a feel for what I teach but if you want to do it right then I lay it out step by step in my Body Swing book and videos. You came back (which most do eventually) and stuck with it. It clicked with this tip so it tells me you were still hitting which is why you weren't consistent. Glad you found it. Now, never stop doing it.

May I hinge my wrists right away when I take my backswing. And rehinge fast also. Is it a good idea. Thanks
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
No. Hinge as soon as you go back and you activate the arms. This is what I am trying to stop you from doing. Allow your body rotation (shoulders) to take the club back.

Just wondering if this could also help with someone with less tight arms and hands but more with a chronic flat backswing? It seems touching the neck is a great feedback to getting to the right position at the top.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
It would help for sure. Why don't you just get to halfway back and lift your arms up a little allowing the right arm to untuck a little. I too had a flat backswing at one point when I was taught that many years ago. I hit it nowhere doing that swing. So I did practice swings in a mirror every day watching for the whole shaft above my head at the top. 2 weeks later I never though of it again.

Thanks for the tip Paul. When I say chronic I mean chronic. To the point where I can do 1000 practice swings in the perfect spot and as soon as I address the ball and swing back my live view camera shows me inches lower. I have improved slowly with a lot of work and got to just below shoulder level but I am hoping this advice will help me get it that final few inches. Thanks again.

Well after getting out the camera and using my 7 iron I can say that this tip fixed 30 years of my flat backswing in 15 minutes. Yesterday I spent hours trying to incrementally fix it and barely progressed. Oh and the loose arms were automatic at the same time. You need to put this tip in the special advice section. It's too amazing for KZfaq.

Hi Paul; I tried this at the range today . My issue has always been grip pressure which tightens my arms & wrists & can't swing freely. It worked really well to keep my arms & wrists loose. The only problem I had was being able to stay synched thru the swing because of a totally different feeling. I wasn't hitting it a long way but I know that wasn't the reason for the drill. I hit about 150 balls with this & really liked the loose feeling after a while. It's gonna take a while to be able to do this with irons tho. Awesome tip.

Nothing worked, until I loosen my arms. I was so locked up I couldn’t turn my hips, shift my weight and to top it off I had a chicken wing. So I watched your video loosen up your arms and the change I experience was amazing. Very quickly my swing changed I was able to shift my weight, turn hips and my chicken wing was gone. What I realized was that all those things happen naturally if you have rope arms
@paulwilsongolf

Very good. Now you see that looseness is the key. Please stick to this thought. Even though you are starting to feel it you can be even looser. No one swings as loose as I want them to.

Isn't this the instant lag drill you utilized on the elderly gentleman in another video? He wasn't strong or bulky but his lag immediately improved significantly. Assume this drill will help with anyone who has an uncontrollable desire to hit the ball with their hands and arms. My practice swing is so effortless but put a ball in front of me and I cannot for the life of me keep my hands and arms from initiating the swing with poor results. So frustrating as I KNOW the problem but still cannot fix it. This may be the answer I'm looking for to finally shut my arms and hands off (even with a ball in front of me) and just fire the body. Fingers crossed.

I teach a secure grip with loose wrists. You are doing a firm grip with tight wrists. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJ57ZqqU2dHeZ3U.html So try again. Hold on and work the club back and forth and feel your wrist joint unlock: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7ici5pzp6zTmJc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a8V_Y6tjtrSqn2Q.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMCVh9SU35jUnXk.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMCVh9SU35jUnXk.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtFnp5yqramzXX0.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9Gnos2i27q1e5s.html This is a piece. Then you connect this arm unit to your body which is coiling and uncoiling. Get the release first and get the ball hooking. Once you can do that you are doing half right (spin). Then you work add the body to straighten it out (direction). Easiest way: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMqgm9eZqLedhoE.html
