Hi Joe! I did an Ironman at Mount Tremblant in 2017 at 54 and you were my coach! I used your training bible and one of your Ironman programs. I could never have done it without you. Thanks for the incredible journey!!

The position /movement of the scapula is probs the most important aspect of swimming.......you need to get the scapula forward during the recovery and during the set up of the catch.......no one on KZfaq seems to emphasise this, but without it, you ain't going to manage much of the other stuff you hear.

@@djokovic1747 After your catch, when your arm is tucked in, close to your body/by the side of you hip (i.e. in your most streamlined position), the next movement comes from the scapula.......you push your scapula forward, which allows you to raise your elbow into the correct recovery position and begin to generate forward momentum with your recovery arm. Most recreational swimmers you watch swing their arms from the shoulder joint during the recovery, and this not only causes injuries, it and also throws the stroke out of sync (generally by inducing a crossover of the midline). Also, if you leave a little bit of travel in your scapula during the reach phase, then it allows you pivot more easily into the catch position. Honestly, mastering control of your scapula will transform your stroke.

Hi, great podcast! I'm a very average age grouper. When running at race pace I breathe 38 times/min but when I swim at race pace I breathe only 28 times/min. I think that drastically changes the rate of perceived exertion and consequently setting the zones should be adapted as well. What do you think?

Most of us move a larger volume of air when we take a breath swimming than we do when running. So the minute ventilation is probably closer to equivalent.
