Future installers, do yourselves a favor. Piece together a paper template about 34 inches tall and 21 inches wide. Strike a line 4 inches below the top across the template. This is the footprint of the inverter. Locate your studs or wall placement, tape up the template and take a look if its good placement for you. Then use the bracket over the template and punch a hole into the wall for the screws to go that hold the bracket. A big time saver and your mount will be good and level. Four inches to the top of the inverter from the top of the bracket. 15.5 inches from the top and sides and bottom for clearances.

Yup - agree. Cost is a big part of this renewable energy, In the early days of study, i ran someone's on-line solar calculator to run my house and outbuilding off-grid. Of course, wild variables in this, but the estimate was 180k with a 38 year breakeven! whoaaa nellie. So, planning goes in to cost, and somewhere the lines cross for cost vs return. i see hundreds of giant windturbines along the interstate where i live. So, who knows. Looks like there have been massive advances in solar product, maybe wind will be here some day . thanks again for your opinions

Actually, I do have one request / question in regards to the transfer times. If my current 6500s switch to bypass mode or back, the non-UPS'd loads lose power for a second since they are slow. The 18k should be fast enough to transfer power without a computer or other load from losing power, but i haven't seen it verified as of yet. I primarily built my setup to offset the power draw that my servers use - theyre pigs. Every time it goes from Solar/Battery/Utility to Solar/Utility/Battery, its a click fest for all of my UPSs in my basement transferring power temporarily. Itd be great to not have that happen - perhaps i can justify the purchase to stop the clicking 😊

Hi I'm wanting to install one of these in my garage with my 200 amp subpanel but my main panel is 60' away. I have a grid tie system connected right next to my main panel. Do you think this will be a problem and I will ultimately need to put it next to my main panel. (The reason why is because my battery bank would be better off in the garage )

It’s just a longer run of wire to pass to the inverter and back. But it can be done. It’s simpler to have it close to the main panel. This unit could potentially take the place of your grid tied unit also.

Seems we never see them hook it up to main breaker panel. Do they hook it directly to a 50 amp breaker or do they disconnect grid power from power company going into main breaker panel and then hoot it into charge/inverter.

You could do it either way actually. The manual describes the different methods of wiring the unit for grid assist features. If you follow the link I posted and take a look at the manual you’ll see it. I do want to see more videos with this unit incorporating some grid functionality. I think some people are already working on that now. In my setting though, I’m essentially running off grid. So I don’t currently have the need for that aspect of the inverter.

So this unit can handle 2 battery banks based on this wiring. If I wanted to do 240v split phase, providing 100amp to each leg of a 200a breaker, I will need to buy 2 units and run in parallel, but also need to get 4 battery banks? Or just 2 banks and use 1 set of lugs?
@GavinStoneDIY
@GavinStoneDIY 11 ай бұрын
So those are really two different things really. The first is the batteries. This can be run with a single 4/0 cable from the battery bank. Which would supply enough amperage. But it’s designed to double up the 2/0 to make up the difference if you need it. So I had 2/0 available and it was easy to install. The second would be the 240v split phase. This unit will supply a continuous 50 amp split phase. So yes, if you needed 100 amps you’d need two of these units. If you had two units you can supply them both from the same battery bank with a bus bar. Ot run two separate banks to each inverter. I hope this makes sense.
@KoiAquaponics
@KoiAquaponics 11 ай бұрын

Gavin, I have 12 Bi-facial 405 SEG panels for a total of 4,860 watts hook to PV1 on our 18K. On a clear 30 degree sunny day and at solar noon the 18K would not charge the batteries at full power. Gavin - one last product idea. i just started scouring Utube looking for more info on the solar industry. One of the things i've noticed (so far) is the lack of any of these systems that include a wind-powered generator. I really don't get it. These generators are readily available and for the most part cheap for kwh produced. Do you see the hint here?? Kirk
@GavinStoneDIY
@GavinStoneDIY Жыл бұрын
Wind turbines require their own separate charge controllers due to the inconsistent voltage generated. The trackers on solar charge controllers have issues when trying to power them with wind. There are wind specific charge controllers. It’s unfortunate, but in most cases people aren’t really able to gather even a fraction of the power from wind as they would with solar. There are exceptions of course. But in my opinion, most people would do better investing more money into battery storage than putting it in to wind.
@p5makersplace

@@GavinStoneDIY Gavin : from my newbee research i totally agree, but this was sorta the same conversation about solar 10 years ago. I know there are now some dual mode inverters, although not what one would pursue for an installation like you just did in the vid above,,,, unless,,, the next version had a tap that allowed x-amount of power to come from a derived wind turbine. In reality, i can't see leaving this alone. In small winds, 24 hours of power. There is some appeal there, but the question is when will technology spur demand.
@GavinStoneDIY
@GavinStoneDIY Жыл бұрын
@@p5makersplace typically demand seems to spur the technology. There just isn’t enough wattage generated from wind in most places. Solar can generate so much power per square foot now. It just doesn’t make wind a practical option for most. Having said that, if I were on a higher elevation I would probably at least try a small turbine to see what it could generate.

@GavinStoneDIY
@GavinStoneDIY Жыл бұрын
They monitor the power being generated from the grid. So in the event you are using the grid integrated features. The inverter is capable of adding inverter or grid power as needed. I have mine hooked up now because the inverter can also monitor the power the grid is sending in bypass mode with them. Hope this makes sense.

@@Bripromo they are just a monitor that clamps on to the wires coming from the grid. Like an AC clamp meter. It allows the unit to know how much power the grid is producing through the inverter. Because the inverter can use DC and grid at the same time. It needs to know exactly how much of each it’s utilizing.

@@jonathanlyerly8501 if you’re wanting to just feed a critical loads panel then you could have it wired like a standard off grid inverter. It’s honestly a rapidly changing industry, there is always something new coming out. On the other hand, if it’s quality and it works people are usually happy staying with a unit even if it isn’t the “latest tech”. I see that a lot with people that have older Schneider inverters. Might be less communication capabilities, but solid equipment.

18kpv is more for on grid applications where you can sell back to utility.... For pure off grid, l went with the pair of 6500-48 .... Less $$$ but more power, 12k vs 13k Less pv 18k vs 16k.... each inv @ 8k ..... Better surge capability..... And a 2 to 1 advantage if inverter fail happens....2 inverters vs 1.

Let's talk in $$$ I can get 4 6500's with the PDP for the same cost as the 18kpv And the backup feature of multiple inverters, off grid (power lines 15 miles away...not an option) so any of the grid connection features would not be of use, but you still pay for them. But the peace of mind when or if a inverter fails...not having a complete shutdown while waiting for repair/ replacement. Mine are in a separated room back corner of the garage, so noise is not an issue, nor weather proof. I only wish that the 6500 had a touch screen... other wise the cost / performance is best I found with redundancy of multiple units.

@@duanelinquist4244 there are definitely pros and cons. I think idle consumption plays a larger part in this then people realize though. If you’re figuring in cost you may have to add some battery storage to compensate for the difference in idle wattage. The 18kpv is a whole different animal really. The quality and strong surge capacity are awesome. But like I mentioned in my other video, I ran my house on the 6500’s. So they’ll get the job done.

@GavinStoneDIY True. The build quality/ warranty, idle draw, programming & screen, of the 18kpv is better. Just not worth the cost difference IMO. But if your able to sell back grid power, this is a no brainer to recover cost over time., plus have the 200A pass through So I feel the 18kpv is the option for on grid and the 6500es for off grid.
