Dont get mad that she is explaining the physics! I have to do this for my physics class and explain why my idea works and all the physics behind it, so it was really helpful for her to talk about it.

hey i like your videos. In my physics class we were only allowed to use paper and straws ( and glue/tape) we thought about those seeds that spin down from trees like a helicopter. We then took the paper, made two rotors, and two fins to cath air. When we released our egg drop copter, it floated down and landed. It was a huge success and is now on our schools physics wall of fame!!!

We did egg drops in high school, lots of fun. I got this long tube, and put a bunch of foam (cut out of heavy, yellow stuff, almost like pillow foam) in it, and put the egg near the top. It had a water balloon on the bottom to decrease the impact, and fins to keep it upright while falling. . . The egg broke. . . because it tipped over after it landed, I didn't catch it in time. But I still got a "B" for actually doing it and having a unique idea!

I once built an egg-drop contraption similar to the one at 2:25. It was a drinking straw tetrahedron with the egg suspended by rubber bands on a cotton ball cushion. It was meant to use a parachute to stabilize it and prevent it from falling over. However, due to winds, it still landed on its side, breaking the egg. I've been wanting to try it again someday.

Great video. Need a squared on the Vo at 3:04. This doesnt affect the outcome as it cancels but for use in other places; dont forget to square the initial velocity.

Its a bit tricky, a lot of potential chickens gave up their lives to perfect it. The drop was from about 20ft. You roll the paper into a cone and tape it. put the egg into the cone and drop it. The "nose" of the cone acts as a crumple zone and completely absorbs the shock of the fall. Heres the trick. The egg needs to be positioned JUST low enough to keep the center of gravity below where the cone will flip over mid flight and spill your egg. This is where a bit of trial and error come in.

@TheBeatlesluvdaisy The main structure was made up of 6 non-bendy drinking straws in a tetrahedron shape, connected at the ends by tape. One side was designated as the "base" and one vertex as the "top". Midway up each of the three "base to top" sides, a rubber band was anchored with tape. These were connected to a flat sheet made of cotton balls glued together. The egg rested on top of this sheet of cotton balls. The parachute was made of a plastic bag connected to the "top"

A is a vector, expressed in an oriented space. Saying a is negative is inaccurate. It can be anything. And yes the direction of the vector matters in the result, just as much as the orientation chosen.

There is a annual egg drop competition at Fort Henery Mall in Kingsport, TN and for us they have a formula to factor in weight, number of pices, resting spot on the target, and weather or not it breaks. Also there is cash money prize for winners, I've won twice!!

it should be -14 m/s. velocity is not just speed, but also direction so you need the negative there to show it's moving downwards to the earth.
@Omnigeek6

@Omnigeek6 However, the device had no measure to cope with a sideways landing. Due to winds, it tipped over on landing and the egg was ejected. It hit the pavement and was destroyed. Future designs will be designed to land on any side, but may or may not still include a parachute.

hehe i am definitely a nerd for answering this. the velocity eqn was just fine (just thorough). and the downward force due to gravity is always the same, however, she's talking about an impulse force and she's right, it's a heck of a lot more complicated.

One way is to take the egg and several balloons. Fill the balloons with enough air to make them soft and gooshie but not too much air where they are hard. Completely surround the egg with the balloons and tape them together. Put all of this in a cardboard box and you are good to go.
@justonejoey
@justonejoey 17 жыл бұрын
haha i feel like such a nerd answering this. but when you're talking about freefall situations where you ignore air resistence, downward acceleration - which is what you care about - is always a constant 9.8m/s^2. you're thinking about average acceleration.

yes, its simplified... the Vo is the initial speed wich is 0, so delete that, then the (X - Xo) its the difference between the inicial and final height, so you just put the height you are throwing the egg.

@falling333 9.8 m/s2 is the acceleration due to gravity or under free fall. The initial force you use to throw it adds something extra. Or an initial velocity. And I think you have acceleration due to gravity and velocity of light "c" mixed up. No particle that has been discovered or invented so far can travel faster than 300000000 meters/sec.

My son did it with a single letter size piece of typing paper and a small piece (1" long more or less) of generic 'invisible' tape. ... Make a very pointy cone. Cut it off (ok, use sizzors for this) so the 'top' is smooth. Put the egg in the cone 'blunt' end of the egg toward the pointy end of the cone. Drop the cone. Most of the time (90+%) the egg is good. Smaller eggs do better. Also, the point crumples into a really neat pattern. Somone want to video this?

Someone help me!!! for my school project, we CAN'T attach the egg to something. instead we build something for the egg to fall though. we can't get the egg on a slide; it has to fall directly down. and if the egg touches something, the thing has to fall with the egg and the egg Must fall on the floor: no cushion or anything like that. and since we are learning about pressure, we have to also write a report on how it works. (the "structure" has to be something about pressure)...please...help!
