Eric Matthews must surely rank as THE most unlucky contestant in 15-to-1 history, coming runner-up TWICE to Daphne Fowler (and still standing at the end both times)! In 2002, Eric would finally (and IMO deservedly) taste gameshow victory when he won an episode of The Weakest Link, having been the strongest player overall and the best player in 4 out of 7 elimination rounds, so he clearly wasn't a "bad" quizzer - he was just very unfortunate coming up against Daphne Fowler twice...

Daphne has won hundreds of competitions going back to the 70s, she has won houses , cars and holidays for herself and her kids, she retired from quizzing in 2014.

My Gramp used to go to a weekly sports quiz that a team containing Daphne Fowler also used to go to. He's like an encyclopedia of sports knowledge, but let's just say his team always used to finish second.

They invited Don and Eric back in the same episode as Daphne in the following series later that year... Eric again came runner-up, and was still standing at the end; Don was less fortunate, and went out in the first round

She won a trip to Seoul for the 1988 Olympics on Going For Gold. In fact, I'm pretty sure I just spotted her in the crowd in a video from that event - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lZpjdryKqs_MpI0.htmlm36s - that has to be her over Petra Felke's right shoulder.

Her first answer in the final was wrong. The urn contains The Ashes. The trophy isn't "the ashes" the Ashes Urn is the trophy.

So she was not the highest scoring contestant, i believe the Scottish Minister Bill Mckaig beat her score in 1999 as he scored 433 with his three lives also still in tact. Well done Daphne all the same!
