Wow - I almost gave up on having a few chickens in my yard with the cost of a coop and the shoddy workmanship of wooden coops. I found your videos today - and this just may be the answer for me. I've never had chickens but I just am really wanting to have perhaps 3 or 4 as an egg supply and as pets. thanks for your videos

The Eglu would be good! Just yesterday on their website they had coops for 20% off. I’m not sure if they still have that deal going, but I would go to omlet.com to check it out. I think you would really like the Eglu. It is durable and easy to clean and maintain. Happy chicken raising❤️

I have 4 chickens in the cube and they are really happy. I just have the 2 metre run so it’s easy to move the cube but a also have a fenced run which is a bind to move but keeps them contained if I don’t want them free range ( which they mostly are) I power wash the cube every weekend, it’s so easy. Love it.

I have had my Eglu cube for about 18 months. Love it! Easy to clean. Agree with this video about access for sure. Today, a snowy cold northeast Ohio day..the auto door is blocked. Guess what? I can’t access the door to remove any blockage or even check it out. Yes, I can go in from the back after removing the roof and hoisting myself inside - but it’s freezing cold outside! I too, put on a chicken perch last summer and it was a PAIN!!! Agree with this video about moving it around with the long run, especially over rough terrain or on hills. Last con, of course, is the price…however…you do get what you pay for and Omlet seems to stand behind their product. Other pros…the jacket is a great add on for subzero temps here in the north, the chickens stay warm in winter and cool in the summer. Thanks for a great video.

Our winter has mild this year, but when it did dip into the 20s and below, we had No problems at all with the door. As I was re-reading my original post, I think I was mostly complaining about the design of the Eglu coop/run to access the door if I needed to. Overall, I find the door to work well and Omlet stands behind their products. @@StephanieArtVideos

We love our eglu cube as well! I believe the smaller flock is what the eglu was specifically designed for by the students who came up with its original concept. The 2 hacks we came up with are 1) using 1x2 lumber that has been sanded as roosting bars. We drill holes at the ends and cut the bar an inch longer on each side so that it can be secured with zip ties or coated wire. You can easily move them from outside the run rather than climbing in. I also have the super long run but I ordered the additional run a la carte and only have the 6 ft run built onto the cube. When we move the coop, I detach the extension that is screwed down with the omlet brand anchors and move that off and move the actual coop after. Once relocated, I set the open end of the extension over the entrance of the attached run and secure with the plastic clips. I take the doors off the attached run and slap them on the extension. I may have to make a video on that since I realize my description may sound confusing. Happy hen keeping!

Thanks for your honest video! I'm contemplating getting the Eglu Cube to house 4 hens (in southern Calif), but the price tag is holding me back. Approx $1600 out the door is a bit too much for this new chicken owner. My other concern with the Eglu cube is the inconvenience of cleaning the area under the run. I would like to just walk in and rake up poop instead of having to wheel the coop and run every day to clean the run area. And lastly, I've heard some Eglu owners end up building a wooden coop afterward because they want more space for the chickens, space to perch and roost a bit higher. So hard to decide.
@tanakahomestead8820
@tanakahomestead8820 Жыл бұрын
I completely understand. You have to consider what is most important. For me, I have found wooden coops are difficult to clean, so for me having a coop that I could easily clean was SUPER important. Yes, the price is very steep for these coops, but they really are durable. 4 chickens would be perfect in the Eglu cube. If your run is not super long you could easily rake in there. In the near future I will be attaching my Eglu run to a larger run I purchased for pretty cheap on Amazon. I think it will work really well. Right now I have my two older girls in a wooden coop made out of a desk! Even this is working well! I will be doing a video on this:). Thank you so much for watching and thank you for your comment!

Great video! My chickens don't love the eggloo. I have 4 mediums. I used a 1-1/2" dia stick and some 4x4 for the roost inside at a diagonal. It gets hot and stays hot during our summers so they don't want to go inside at night they started going back in in the winter. This was an expensive investment so I don't want to ditch it but I have my druthers.

That is a great idea to put a roost inside, I didn’t think it could be done❤️I live in Florida and it gets super hot. I have not noticed any big issues with the temperature during the summer, but I do try to keep the Eglu in the shade. There are 3 to 4 chickens that will go in the coop consistently at night throughout the year, but there are four chickens that enjoy roosting outside in the run. I have no idea why this is LOL, but everybody seems happy! Thank you for your input🐔

I’ve had an Eglu for 3 and a half years now, and I think it’s held up pretty well. The only issue I’ve had is that the plastic clips have been breaking. I live in England, so we don’t really get extreme weather, but when we do have a storm/it snows then I think it does a really good job at keeping my hens warm.

Ironically, I just moved my Eglu to a different location and also noticed those clips were a bit shotty. Yes, I do agree they can break. I also love my Eglu! For me, it has been the best coop so far. I love that I can clean it so easily and my hens seem to love it too. Where you are it gets cold and you have that type of extreme weather and in Florida we also get extreme weather, but the heat is the problem for us. Somehow Omlet made the Eglu to withstand all types of temperatures and weather conditions. Pretty impressive! Thank you so much for your comment. Happy chicken raising!

You are right about the hen capacity of the Eglu. I have four Barred Plymouth Rocks. This is a larger breed of chicken, and the Eglu is perfect for them. I wouldn't want to put any more in there. Of course, it could alternatively house a half-dozen smaller hens. These henhouses are great for people like me, who consider their hens pets, and just need enough eggs for their family. The Eglu is not designed to be a farm product, where you're raising multiple birds for eggs or meat. Your set-up looks very nice and fun for the hens! However, with a run that long, you for sure need two people to move it!

I could not agree with you more! I keep my husband around for chores like this🤣 Same here regarding the number of hens. I really only wanted 6 and ended up with 8. I am realizing though that about 3-5 like to hang out on the roosting bars in the run on any given night🤷‍♀️I really think they like it out there (I spy on them with my camera). We are not selling our eggs or anything and I agree the Eglu is not the way to go if you want to go commercial. It is really just for our family and we enjoy blessing others with extra eggs if we have them❤️the Eglu is practical and for our purpose works very well.

I’ve been thinking about getting the go up model with a 9 foot run and wheels however you brought up a good pointer about maybe wanting to go a little bigger down the road Maybe I should look at the cube with wheels and the long run I’ll be moving ours around in our backyard also I’m only starting out with two started pullets from Meyer Hatchery in Polk ohio here in the Ohio Valley I may have to get the insulated cover for the winter time to make sure they stay warm with just two of them in the cube since it’s a little bigger their body heat may not be enough to keep them warm in 0° days but then if I had one or two more chickens they’d probably be all right more body heat. I know our local Walmart just raise the price of eggs again and I don’t believe that commercial poultry house chickens are treated humanely I think this is the best way to go

I totally agree that raising your own chickens is the way to go. You have a say in how they are treated, what they eat, and what they are exposed too. It is very rewarding! Although I think Omlet did a great job engineering, allowing good airflow ,but keeping the Eglu insulated, you certainly may benefit from their insulated Eglu cover in those kind of temperatures. I certainly can't say this for sure being in Florida though. I say get the bigger model if you can. You may change your mind down the road and want more chickens! The only real hang up for me is moving it. It think my biggest problem is that the run is pretty long and that is what makes it difficult to move. I also may just be weak! Have fun. Thank you for your comment:)

I had a wooden hutch and I thought it was too dirty, not able to clean so I got the eglu cube extra long length. I have cement flooring with a couple of open areas for the chickens to scratch when I at them out near dusk they go out hunt around and then come back to the eglu. I moved the cube every day and the metal wire on the bottom has broken off, the wheel also broke. Well I found they poop everywhere and all the time so even washing the cement down twice a day was just not enough. I then tried to simulate a dirt and sand box and that really worked no smell at all until it rained. I tried to cover their run but then its not good enough ventilation and we are hving weeks of rain. I brought them into cages into the garage. I dont really know what to do now. I may have to give the chickens away really sad.

I am so sorry to hear you have not had a good experience. Yes, chickens can be stinky. That was one of the cons I mentioned in one of my other videos. I use the PDZ Horse Stall Refresher in my poop tray under my pine shavings, which can really help if you are sensitive to smells. Each morning I also go out and wipe the bars down and change the poop tray frequently. As far as coop placement. Do you have a way to put them over grass or just regular dirt? If you do that you can rake the area and then put the droppings and whatnot in a compost, while helping to reduce the smell at the same time. Just a thought.

Just to be fair I am not affiliated with Eglu, but per their site they say the large coop can house 6 large breeds, 8 medium breeds, or 10 bantams. I have 4 Easter Eggers and 4 Rhode Island Whites. I think having 6 would offer a bit more space for them in the coop. I have medium sized breeds;) I have found though that my Rhode Island Whites like to roost outside the coop at night (in the run of course). This certainly helps my situation. I have the Eglu cube, which is the largest they offer. On the Omlet site it says the cube can house 6 large breeds, 8 medium breeds, or 10 bantams. I have 4 Rhode Island whites and 4 Easter eggers. My Rhode Island whites enjoy roosting outside at night (for some reason), but that makes for more room in the coop. I only intended to have 6, but the company I purchased my chickens from put two extra in. I think 6 would be better for the Eglu…and I don’t really consider my chickens to be very big.

@@Louise-xr5ok I do remember having to go out there that first week with a flashlight to guide them in the coop at night. Eglu stairs could be better. Didn't like seeing my fluffy butts grapple with them. Happened to have some good-quality fake grass (from a big hardware store that has the big carpet-cutting machine to sell carpet by the foot,) so I cut a swathe slightly wider than the stair sides and long enough to wrap over the top stair and under the bottom stair. Covered the steps with it and fastened with zip ties at the top, bottom and sides. Provides a better, continuous grip. As soon as even small chicks can get to the bottom stair, they have no problem getting all the way up to the coop. My little modification has held up well for 15 months, going on many more!

We’ve had our Eglu for six months and here’s my opinion: Good news is nowhere for mites to hide, so far. The chickens are clean with no mites or lice, even through their first very small molt. It does protect the chickens very well from predators. We have all of them, include weasels, raccoons, coyotes and wolves who ignore the whole thing as far as I know. We have a Cattle Dog who alerts if anything comes on the property (yes, even 250+ yards away) and he hasn’t alerted very often. When he does, I flip on the back light and rarely see any eye shine but they aren’t close. Zero signs of mice/rats. It’s pretty easy to clean BUT it does require cleaning more often than a henhouse. I have to attend to the pan every day and dust to protect their lungs. And, cleaning poop off the roosts is a job cuz you have to put your torso inside to reach the front door. We had to buy the larger run extension at a very high cost, put it together, put it on a TRAILER (4 adults needed because it’s heavy and wiggly, so we had to use boards to pick it up) to move it to where we wanted and now our mobile coop is no longer mobile. Had to? Yes! It was destroying my back to crawl into the teeny run to place and remove the dust bath and stuff! All that necessary stuff takes up floor space! The chickens were rushing the door!!! AND, it’s not healthy to be crawling in chicken sh**! I even used my gardening knee pads to protect my clothes. The extension is over 6 feet tall so I can at least work comfortably inside and actually pick up my chickens to inspect! BUT, the extension has narrow spacing on the lower 1/3 so hanging the water/food/grit/oyster shell buckets is a challenge to say the least!! You get feeder and water buckets but where do you put grit and oyster shell?!? That takes up flor space, too (so I bought the expensive hanging ones. But, you never hear it mentioned). AND, you’re stuck with 6 chickens for as long as you own this! So, when a chicken gets older and stops laying, you can’t let her live her life out because you can’t add more chickens who will produce and keep ones who don’t! And, adding pullets to your flock is another conundrum with so little space. I have found an alternative way to purchase wind screens and roof toppers but that still cost almost $200! We needed them because our winters are windy. And, we made our own perches for the large extension out of wood stock we had, drilled holes in the ends and secured them at different heights. The chickens still want to free range so I have to walk around with them to protect from the hawks and eagles. We’ve been dive-bombed many times! It takes time I don’t really have so I limit it to twice a week. We have well over $3,000 invested in this set up and I feel we could’ve spent the money more wisely so we could have more chickens in the future!! I wanted a chicken tractor on a small flat bed I could move with our small tractor. Complicated, sure, but it would have been something we could easily expand if and when needed. Live and learn the hard way.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and thoughts on the Eglu. I definitely hear you and I totally get it. It is certainly pricey (especially when you add things) and you are limited with the number of chickens you can have. I wish I could have more chickens, but unfortunately with this coop you are limited in that regard. I am actually in the process of connecting my Eglu to a larger run, which will offer more space for them and easy access for me:). I guess it really boils down to what you want and what is most important. I appreciate your comment. Happy chicken raising!
