Follow along as I restore and test this 1960's vintage EICO model 1030 vacuum tube power supply. In this part 1, I'll show the process of safely powering up a vintage vacuum tube electronic item, discuss the wiring schematic, see if the unit functions, and decide what restoration will need to be done.

You're explaining a lot. Which is great. Following your thought process finding faults, analysis of circuits with schematics, that is invaluable stuff for me. And it's what is different from other, also sometimes really accomplished electronics channels. It's the reason I'll be subscribing. That being said, there *is* stuff I'm missing: - I'd really like to hear about the thought process behind replacing components with other components. This EICO 1030 is a fine example; there are several types of electrolytics aund you use several types to replace them. I know a little about the reasons, probably, but it'd be great if these were explained, just to further and expand that knowledge. - I wouldn't mind seeing soldering from time to time, and freeing components etc. There is a lot of soldering around, granted, but I believe it can still be gleaned a lot from watching someone more experienced. Doesn't have to be the whole process, sure, but some parts would be interesting. And it's soothing, somehow. ;) (I know there is more in other clips. Can be still more, if you ask me.) - I like tube stuff. Wouldn't hurt to know more about the role of the tube and its roles and contacts in the curcuit more. You might think it's boring; for me, it isn't. - When you're talking about degrees - it's Fahrenheit? - Keep on doing this, please. :)

Thanks for watching and subscribing. I appreciate the feedback and learning what viewers would like to see more, or less, of. The video still being created now for the ADCOM preamplifier part 2, has some discussion about choosing capacitors so you may find that helpful. The video on safety capacitors has some soldering and desoldering tips.. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/faqEqKt12K6sdnU.html just after the 11 minute mark. I try not to repeat topics too much but your point is well taken. I like vacuum tubes too and will continue to include projects using them. Fahrenheit vs Celsius it was Fahrenheit.

Thanks for a great pair of videos. Mightn't hurt to check the electrolytics between the current-limited test and first applying a load. They'll have had a little time to re-form but may well be dodgy still. Also to scope the output when you apply a load, so if the electrolytics are bad you'll see excessive ripple: the regulator will have enough bandwidth to smooth much of it but not all. If they're bad, their ESR will probably have gone high and at these voltages if they blow it'll be messy. Note also that EICO didn't include current-sharing resistors in the cathode lines of the pass valves: the valves are just paralleled directly. They'd have been matched at manufacture, but after all these years it's likely that one of those expensive 6L6s will reach its dissipation limit before the other. That may happen well below the supply's rated maximum output and load.

All the original electrolytic capacitors were replaced with new parts so I was not concerned about testing their performance in detail. They were not in good condition anyway, that's a given with the old capacitors. Valid point on the lack of current sharing resistors on the output tubes. The 6L6's in this supply test fine and matched but if one is weak the load current will not be equal through them.

I actually noticed the volume level was lower than I would have liked and will work on that on future videos.

It's truly sad that what used to be common sense are now safety disclaimers. But, of course, I'm a non-attorney spokesperson.
