Writing & Rhetoric (thru Classical Academic Press) is an excellent writing curriculum! You do one lesson over the course of a week. We love it!!

Another writing curriculum I have used and liked was Essentials in Writing. It is videos but they are short and sweet and engaging. It includes grammar and writing.

We really enjoyed the last two levels of write shop JR for grades 5 & 6. I’m trying the good and the beautiful language arts for grade 7. Not sure how much writing is in that but my kids write a lot on their own so I figured one year off of a writing curriculum can’t hurt 😊 I have twin girls going into 7th and a girl going into 5th.

I love your videos. They are so helpful and very knowledgeable. Can you tell me how to plan or schedule CLE in your planner? This is my second year homeschooling and struggling with this . ☺️ thank you

Thank you! ❤️ I find CLE to be the easiest to schedule bc we just do the next lesson. So I would write in whatever subject it is and do the next lesson. So I would just suggest deciding how many days a week you want to do that subject and write it out that way. I hope that helps!

Progeny Press Study guides are great. They are Christian based and they have them for elementary through high school literature.

Hi! we did IEW structure and style last year and I was very happy with it. I would agree it was a lot but I did this with my then 5th grader and for language all she did was fix it grammar and IEW so that evened out. We are taking a break from it this year but will go back next. I've heard great things about Brave writer but personally have not used it. I hope you find what you are looking for!!

We are actually tackling IEW theme based writing curriculum that goes along with our history for my 8th grader(ancient history)! I’m not a dvd mom either! It seems like it will be pretty explanatory without dvd help!

We are using IEW for the 1st time for my 9th grader. He chose the Lion's Song, book 1 of the Narnia study. At first I wasn't sure how the curriculum was set up? Could we jump in and do a study since we had never used any of the IEW student writing/dvd lessons? I read a lot, watched a lot of videos and asked a lot of questions and came to the conclusion that yes we can!! When our books arrived it was exciting to actually lay eyes on the lessons and see the layout. He is so excited! No dvd, he reads a chapter in the assigned Narnia book, then does the lesson in the workbook. I considered doing a different study with my 6th grader (in our state he is MS now) but decided that once my 9th grader is done with the Lion's Song he can hand it down and get a 2nd round of use. Instead of IEW my 6th grader will be using the writing tracks for 4 of our Gather Round units. I was homeschooled (about 100 years ago🤣) and my mom and I wrote, edited and printed our own newspaper. We published it monthly and had paid subscribers (family & friends) across the country for 3 years. My boys and I are going to start it up again this fall and really put our creative writing, note taking & editing skills to the test! I'm so excited to introduce my kids to the Christian Light Bible 5! When I watched your last video I jumped on ebay and ordered the light pack and teachers manual. It should be here this week some time and I can't wait to see it. I've never used there curriculum before. Thanks for sharing ❤️❤️❤️

That is so cool that you can use the topic books for IEW without previously using the DVDs! Maybe I’ll look into that! What a fun idea about the newspaper! That is so fun. I’m so glad you’re going to try CLE Bible…..it looks so good! ❤️

We have already started back to school. We are *loving* Biblioplan!! I’m so thankful for your channel bc it introduced me to BP. 😁 My oldest is in HOD high school, and it is fantastic (especially if you need to have your oldest work more independently). Just FYI, HOD will use the Master Books Archeology book in World Geography. I know you’ve mentioned possibly going back to HOD in high school, so I just thought I’d mention it. 😉 Have you looked at Essentials in Writing? We have liked it much more than IEW…takes much less time. It is streamed online, but it’s completely different from IEW. I know making the decisions can be difficult, and you definitely don’t want to waste money. I hope you make your decisions with peace soon!🤗

I’m seriously considering that for high school for my oldest next year….soooooo good to know which book they will use! I’ll set that one aside just in case! Thank you!

For a straightforward writing program that has an easy to follow teachers manual (and no dvds), I have heard Write Shop is good. It's a grade 6-10 program. And it teaches all the different types of writing, as your student going into high school will need more than creative writing, but also research paper writing, etc.

Maybe check out Jump In from Sharon Watson. It’s a great writing course without videos. I also highly recommend powerhouse writing, though it’s online, but it’s short and simple and then you take that structure and use it in writing for other courses. Essentials in writing has shorter videos than IEW. For a super fun course that has videos, but even I wanted to watch them (though I didn’t need to), check out cover story from clear water press. IEW’s videos were very long in comparison to others.

You mentioned your 8th grader being a good writer naturally, which brought to mind reviews I've read suggesting IEW can be helpful for the writing fearful ("I don't know what to write."), yet potentially harmful to natural writers: IEW's formulaic approach can be like drill and kill to creativity. This and the huge time investment of IEW are why I've repeatedly dabbled and thus far walked away, I don't want to extinguish the creative flame my 6th grader already carries. I do plan to incorporate some form of writing instruction in future (e.g., essay writing); however, for now I assign my daughter daily or semi-daily compositions drawn from Bible, History, Literature, or Science readings, and her writing muscles are flexing just fine. Perhaps something to consider?

We tried IEW and one kid loved it, one kid hated, and it was too much for me. We have liked Writeshop I and II, though I did use the online videos for my older kids for 9th and 10th grade and we're doing EIW with videos for 11th grade. My daughter is doing Writeshop I and II for 7th and 8th and then we'll see!

This video is old so I was wondering what you used for writing and did it work for your family? I’m a hunt for writing curriculum. 😢 We used writeshop and we are currently using IEW structure and style. We are not a dvd/video family either. My daughter doesn’t like it and it’s completely overwhelming for her. We will finish it but I need something else for grade 8. She has really taken a deep interest in religion and god so if it’s Christian that would be even better.

Hi! We used Writeshop last year and it was good. I think if I put more prep time into it and get more consistent with it, it should work well for us. So I’m sticking with that for next year.

I wanted to do writeshop and then I watched a video flip through and it's very parent intensive and lots of details with getting stuff ready. I think Bravewriter looked good if you really like the creativity to it, but it's not "structured" like I wanted for my boys, so we are doing WTM writing with ease and writing with skill.
